World War Z: First Impressions & Marc Forster on the Zombie Epic

Friday, March 29, 2013

If a filmmaker (besides George Romero) - back in the late-'70s/early-'80s - had said they were setting out to make a big budget, large-scale zombie film, Hollywood would have laughed.  And for a number of reasons.  For one, Romero had the zombie market cornered.  Who would attempt to match the intellectual quality he had thrust on the portrayal of a zombie apocalypse?  Secondly, Hollywood wasn't exactly throwing money at zombie-fueled entertainment back then.  Moreover, Hollywood wasn't too thrilled with the violence in the zombie films that were being made.

The climate has certainly shifted, however, and "zombies" today mean dollar signs.  Flesh-eating - once an on-screen taboo - is pretty accepted these days and the undead no longer shoulder any sort of stigma.  There is no bigger example of this than the existence of the largest studio-funded zombie project ever: World War Z.  Based on the novel by Max Brooks and starring Brad Pitt (also wielding a producer credit), the film is a globe-trotting adventure set in the middle of a zombie outbreak and ShockTillYouDrop.com received a 20-minute preview of the Marc Forster-directed film.

Paramount unveiled the first official teaser poster for World War Z, opening June 21st, today and it certainly makes an impact.  Look beyond the "how did that bus get there?" and marvel at the swarm of human bodies - the most powerful visual we've seen in the teaser trailer to date - rising up to bring down a helicopter.  Cool stuff.

The poster premiere comes on the day that ShockTillYouDrop.com is getting a first-look at lengthy footage from the film and we've spoken to director Marc Forster recently, so stay tuned for a full write-up on that experience.  A trailer, meanwhile, is due tonight at 12:01am PST on Apple.

Six Genre Movies I'm Eager to See in 2013

Monday, December 31, 2012

This piece was originally posted in November, but with 2013 nearly upon us...why not dust it off?

My annual "most anticipated" list is upon us - I'm just switching up the headline to make it a bit more personal as the following titles, yes, represent the movies I'm eager to see in 2013.  Now, I've done this long enough to know I have to set down certain criteria or run the risk of comments like, "You idiot!  What about [insert title here]?  I'm excited about it and you should be, too!"

Here is how this list breaks down.

The following represent films that have locked release dates.  It also represents films I have not seen - that means You're Next and Maniac are off the list (but both come recommended).  If it's not on the list, I've either seen it or I just don't give a damn.  There are some films that are either shooting now or are in post-production that are likely to hit in the latter half of 2013, but that's not for certain, so those are off the list, too.  I'll make mention of a few "in the works" titles I'm curious about at the end.

That said, head inside for my random thoughts on what is to come and what's getting me excited.  We'll start with my #1 pick...

Boom! Zombie Madness In the Trailer for World War Z Starring Brad Pitt

Thursday, November 08, 2012

Zombies are hitting the big time with the very mainstream and big budget spectacle World War Z, an adaptation of Max Brooks' novel.  I use the world mainstream because this is a studio zombie-themed adventure being marketed to the widest possible audience with an A-list star.  Moreover, it's a summer tentpole; Paramount is releasing the film on June 21, 2013.

That being said, the trailer has made its debut, and yes, it looks huge - but what do you expect from a flick that had a unenviable shooting schedule around the world?  Marc Forster of Quantum of Solace directs and, no doubt, fans of the novel will take issue with the various deviations the film takes from the source material.  Still, for tireless fans of the zombie genre (which I can claim to be part of), this looks pretty damn cool.  My concern is the visual FX fueling the horde of zombies.

Troubled World War Z Brings In a New Writer

Friday, June 08, 2012

Riding on the rumors that World War Z was heading back into production for several weeks comes a THR report stating that Damon Lindelof (Lost) is being brought in to tinker with the script for the forthcoming fall reshoots.

Lindelof is currently doing press for another film he worked on, Ridley Scott's Prometheus, opening in theaters today.

THR says that much of the work that's going to be done on the film revolves around the third act, whether Lindelof is the right man for such work...well, that's arguable.

Reshoots are expected to begin sometime in September or October.  Marc Forster directed the film, which was slated to open this December but is now making its debut June 21, 2013.

Mireille Enos: World War Z Might End Zombie Genre

Monday, January 23, 2012

Is World War Z going to be the zombie movie of all zombies movies?

In scope, it's going to be pretty huge.  We're talking about a studio-funded undead tale here (a rare thing), with Brad Pitt starring and Quantum of Solace helmer Marc Forster adapting Max Brooks' novel, so, they're throwing money at it to make this an "event" picture.

In talking with E! News, actress Mireille Enos (who plays Pitt's wife in the flick) played the film up real good, addressing the buzz that World War Z will pave the way for a trilogy.  She also had some other interesting things to say about how the film might impact the zombie sub-genre.
