Review: Warm Bodies

Friday, February 01, 2013

With a great mix of horror, humor, and romance, Warm Bodies is a fun new spin on the classic tale of "Romeo & Juliet."

Upon first glance, you might look at Warm Bodies and think, "Ugh. Another zombie movie?" And under most circumstances, you'd be right. The zombie fad may be near its end. But as long as a film can offer a fresh take on old material, it can work. And fortunately, Warm Bodies does just that.

First of all, it tells the story of R from a first person perspective. While most zombies are portrayed as thoughtless monsters, this story takes you inside of the head of a zombie. You hear what he's thinking as he kills a person, his thoughts about his pathetic state, his thoughts about other zombies, etc. It's a great new take on a classic movie monster. The other great thing it does is take the classic story of "Romeo & Juliet" and throws a modern zombie twist on it. The Montague family members are now zombies. The Capulets are the surviving humans. R is, of course, Romeo and Julie is Juliet. I was well over halfway through the film before I had this realization and even then it took them doing an amusing version of the balcony scene to make it blatantly obvious to me. As soon as the scene happens, you could hear the lightbulbs going off among audience members. The film also has some fairytale elements as Julie is the beauty and R is the beast. All of this combined together makes for a fun new take on the zombie genre.

Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters Skewer Box Office Competition, January Eyed As Prime Real Estate for Horror

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Another January weekend and another horror project hitting the top of the box office.

This weekend, it was Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Tommy Wirkola's horror-actioner starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton.

The film grossed an estimated $19 million - not quite hitting the projected numbers analysts were putting it at (on Friday, some said it would hit $25 million), still, not shabby for a film that is at 15% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mama came in at number two with an estimated $12.8 million bringing that film's total to $48.6 million.

A Day in the Life of a Zombie Extra on the Set of Warm Bodies

Thursday, January 03, 2013

Over the years, I have done many set visits for this site, but Warm Bodies offered two firsts for me: My first trip to Montreal, Quebec, as well as my first onscreen role in a major motion picture. The part? Zombie.

I and several other intrepid journos arrived on location at the former Olympic Stadium in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district of Montreal, which had been transformed via movie magic into an abandoned airport for the post-apocalyptic love story between the fetching young Julie (Teresa Palmer) and a bonafide member of the undead named simply "R" (Nicholas Hoult).

We began by picking out our wardrobe, and even though we were merely extras, I decided to give myself some backstory as a hipster zombie, decked out in plaid and rolled up sleeves. With the ensemble in place, I headed to the makeup chair, where an extremely talented British painter named Charlotte Greenwood spent a good 20-30 minutes applying pale skin and purple veins with a brush. Because this is more of a comedic love story the creatures are mostly human looking, not given the "full works" zombie treatment a la The Walking Dead.

A Bunch of New Photos from Warm Bodies to Warm Up To

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

See what I did there with that headline?  Yeah, it's awesome.  Anyway, Summit Entertainment dropped some new photos on us from Warm Bodies, opening February 1st.

And if you're one of those people who yell at us for covering the movie, cancel that noise.  I'm hearing good things and it's the latest genre film from the director of All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Jonathan Levine.

Set after a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human – setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world.

Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry, John Malkovich, Analeigh Tipton, Dave Franco and Cory Hardrict star.  Head inside for access to our image gallery!

Six Genre Movies I'm Eager to See in 2013

Monday, December 31, 2012

This piece was originally posted in November, but with 2013 nearly upon us...why not dust it off?

My annual "most anticipated" list is upon us - I'm just switching up the headline to make it a bit more personal as the following titles, yes, represent the movies I'm eager to see in 2013.  Now, I've done this long enough to know I have to set down certain criteria or run the risk of comments like, "You idiot!  What about [insert title here]?  I'm excited about it and you should be, too!"

Here is how this list breaks down.

The following represent films that have locked release dates.  It also represents films I have not seen - that means You're Next and Maniac are off the list (but both come recommended).  If it's not on the list, I've either seen it or I just don't give a damn.  There are some films that are either shooting now or are in post-production that are likely to hit in the latter half of 2013, but that's not for certain, so those are off the list, too.  I'll make mention of a few "in the works" titles I'm curious about at the end.

That said, head inside for my random thoughts on what is to come and what's getting me excited.  We'll start with my #1 pick...

Exclusive: Warm Bodies May Branch Out into Webseries

Wednesday, April 04, 2012

We absolutely love zombies here at ShockTillYouDrop and while Summit Entertainment’s zombie drama Warm Bodies, adapted by director Jonathan Levine (All the Girls Love Mandy Lane) from Isaac Marion’s novel is taking a different approach to the genre, we’re still hopeful that it will still have the type of flesh-eating survival fun we expect, especially with the great cast Levine has assembled.

One of them is Analeigh Tipton, star of last year’s Crazy, Stupid, Love, who will play Nora Greene, the best friend of the main character, played by Teresa Palmer. While interviewing Analeigh for her new movie, Whit Stillman’s Damsels in Distress, Shock’s non-horror site ComingSoon.net asked her about playing the role. They learned that they’ve made quite a few departures from the character in the book for the movie, and that the book's author may write her backstory for a possible webseries.
