Review: The Last Exorcism Part II

Saturday, March 02, 2013

When The Last Exorcism debuted in the fall of 2010, it’s safe to say that it was definitely cashing in on the found footage genre. It was at it’s peak, with Paranormal Activity just hitting the screen a year prior and lighting the horror scene ablaze. This isn’t to say it wasn’t a bad movie, by any means, in fact it was likely one of the best of the slew of found footage features. It didn’t hurt to have Eli Roth as an executive producer. While we lost Daniel Stamm, the director of its predecessor, but Eli Roth and star Ashley Bell return for The Last Exorcism: Part II which ditches the handicam look and goes for a more traditional cinematic look.

This is the continued story of Nell Sweetzer, who has been found in New Orleans and is put into a home for troubled teen girls. Frank, the owner of the home, is convinced that the demon Abalam does not exist and that Nell has created that story as a way to deal with her prior trauma in Ivanwood. For a while, Nell does well at adjusting to her new life. She finds a job, meets a boy, and even makes friends with the girls in the house. But it isn’t long before Abalam makes his presence known and starts again on his quest for Nell. It’s up to herself and The Order of the Right Hand to stop Abalam from possessing Nell and fulfilling an ancient evil prophecy.

Thursday, February 28, 2013

Continuing where the first film left off, Part II finds teenage Nell Sweetzer (Bell) is found dirty and terrified in the woods having just escaped a demon ritual in which a cult helped her give birth to a demon baby.  She is moved into Davreaux – a girls’ halfway house in New Orleans, where she will try to put her life back together with the help of the therapist, Frank Merle.  She even begins to date a boy named Chris and starts a job at a local hotel.  But something doesn’t feel right to Nell.  She is being sought after by the demon who possessed her in the first film.

February's Horror Releases Have a Theme and Their Own Personal Dance Party

Friday, January 11, 2013

I just wanted to take a quick moment to draw attention to three films opening in the month of February that have very similar imagery for their advertising campaign.  I know this is something I'd normally bring up during my year-end look at various horror movie posters, but I couldn't help myself.  One one-sheet is for a possession film, another is for an alien thriller and the other is a film about a haunting.  Yet they're unified by the contortion of the human body.

The Last Exorcism Part II Poster Bends Over Backward Again

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

CBS Films unveiled the one-sheet for The Last Exorcism Part II and it's a clever spin on what Lionsgate created for The Last Exorcism.  There's too much familiarity for my own taste, however, look closer and...yes, the bent over body and shadow form a "2."

The new film, directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly and opening March 1st, continues where the first film left off.  Teenage Nell Sweetzer (returning cast member Ashley Bell) is found dirty and terrified in the woods having just escaped a demon ritual in which a cult helped her give birth to a demon baby.

Confused and scared, Nell is examined by doctors but she doesn’t remember much about the previous few months except that as a result of everything, her family is now dead.  She is moved into Davreaux – a girls’ halfway house in New Orleans, where she will try to put her life back together with the help of the therapist, Frank Merle.  She even begins to date a boy named Chris and starts a job at a local hotel.  But something doesn’t feel right to Nell.  She is being sought after by the demon who possessed her in the first Last Exorcism.  It wants Nell, but in a different way than before…

Bell hit the genre scene as Nell Sweetzer in 2010's The Last Exorcism, the Strike Entertainment production overseen by producer Eli Roth and directed by Daniel Stamm.  Naturally, given the opportunity to speak with Bell face-to-face today, we had to ask about the forthcoming The Last Exorcism 2, directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly.

To date, very little is known about the sequel other than it picks up months after the events of the first entry.  Nell is back and the film may or may not carry the moniker Beginning of the End: The Last Exorcism 2 (or, at least, that's what some early casting sheets called the production).
