Resident Evil: Retribution On Top at the Box Office, When Might We See Part Six?

Monday, September 17, 2012

Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil: Retribution came out on top at the weekend box office grossing an estimated $21.1 million.  The fifth chapter in the series - released in 2D/3D/IMAX - could not quite overcome the Resident Evil: Afterlife's opening of $26.6 million.

The sequel was up against the 3D release of Disney's Finding Nemo.  Both were able to knock The Possession down a few notches from the number one slot it held two weeks in a row.

Retribution's performance continues to prove there's still an audience for the series, even though its opening gross proves that audience is dwindling.

Review: Resident Evil: Retribution

Friday, September 14, 2012

Five movies into Screen Gems’ successful franchise, you should know what you’re going to get with a Resident Evil movie.  Let’s see if you agree: Each chapter usually begins with an action-packed set piece followed by the usual “My name is Alice…” shtick uttered with complete seriousness by series stalwart Milla Jovovich which is followed by more action usually involving a range of mutated ghouls, hand-to-hand combat and gunfire while a spasmodic soundtrack assaults your eardrums.

Now, if this is your thing, Resident Evil: Retribution is the sequel for you – and I’ll get into why shortly.

Those who have despised the series since it began in 2002 and questioned its durability at the box office, why are you even reading this?  That goes for those detractors out there who balk at the franchise’s lack of faithfulness to the video games as well.  In fact, that goes especially for you guys.  Turn away.  Because Resident Evil: Retribution will draw up the same complaints from you:  It’s a loose interpretation of the Capcom video games, and an even more loose representation of the characters you love.

Four new images from Resident Evil: Retribution have surfaced once again at an international site, and, similar to the last batch that hit last week, they feature Ada Wong, Carlos, Rain and Jill Valentine (yum).

The Ada pic offers fans a good look at what kind of heat she's packin'.  Carlos appears to be in Umbrella garb (we could be totally wrong), ditto with Rain and Valentine...well, she's just looking hot.

Watch Out, Milla, This Resident Evil: Retribution Poster Has Zombies!

Thursday, July 26, 2012

I could be mistaken, but is this a series first?  Is this the first Resident Evil movie poster to actually feature...zombies?  (I know in the U.S. there hasn't been a trace of zombie action on the RE one-sheets as the focus has always been placed on Milla.)  IMP Awards landed a look at some international art for Resident Evil: Retribution.  It's a spin on many of the promo items we've seen before, but it throws in a spoonful of the walking dead.  Zombies big.  Zombies running.  Zombies attacking from all angles.  Get some!  (And look for the movie September 14th.)

Comic-Con Exclusive: Talking Resident Evil with Director Paul W.S. Anderson

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Although director Paul W.S. Anderson was making movies for many years before he tackled Capcom's Resident Evil as a film, that's the movie he's become the most closely associated with, having written all five movies and directed three of them.

This September, the fifth chapter in the series, Resident Evil: Retribution, will open nationwide September 14th, bringing back not only Milla Jovovich's Alice but a lot of characters from the previous installments - many of them who are dead - as well as introducing Ada Wong (Bingbing Li) and Leon Kennedy (Johann Urb) from the games.

Even though it may not seem like the movies have gotten that much bigger in terms of business since the first movie in 2002, the previous movie, Resident Evil Afterlife, which was the first one filmed in 3D, became a nearly $300 million global phenomenon. That may be why Resident Evil: Retribution is boasting its own global initiative as Alice and friends end up travelling to a lot of different places outside Raccoon City in this one.

Both Shock Till You Drop and ComingSoon.net have interviewed Anderson many times, but for one reason or another, this writer has never had a chance to even meet him, so it was cool to finally be able to meet and talk to this master of the horror and video game movie genre.

Visiting Alice's World on the Set of Resident Evil: Retribution

Thursday, January 19, 2012

You enter a typical soundstage.  It's all cables and beams, wood and iron.  Crew members are layered in sweaters and long pants to fight off the chill inside.  The brave ones wear shorts.  At the soundstage's entrance is a Christmas tree; its yuletide glow is tarnished by the fake corpse of an Umbrella Corporation soldier propped up in a chair next to it.  Behind him, a pane of glass splattered with blood.

Welcome to Camp Evil.

Weaving in an out of the gaffers, grips and production assistants, you try not to trip yourself on the minefield of apple boxes, power strips and black cables stretching out into the shadows.  There's a gigantic set to the left.  White pillars stretching to the ceiling and pristine, glossy white floor tiles being dismantled.  Crew members work at a hurried pace to bring the set down by the end of the day.  If one were to set up a camera and shoot this process with time lapse photography, the playback would be akin to watching ants working over a fresh carcass, stripping meat from a bone.

This set is just the front half of the soundstage.  The remaining square acres are a different story, hell, different environment entirely.  It's a set built to impress.

What stretches out before you is a white, icy landscape.  Fake snow drifts lazily to the ground.  Ahead, lying on its side like a wounded animal is some sort of all-terrain vehicle.  And jutting out of the "ice" from below is a submarine conning tower, Umbrella logo emblazoned on the side.

Interview - Talking Resident Evil: Retribution With Milla Jovovich

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Thank God for Milla Jovovich's faux fireplace - a metal and glass box embedded in the wall that emits a nflickering glow like a fireplace and jettisons hot air.  Toronto, Canada in mid-December is a frigid place.  But, courtesy of the actress, she has visiting press members huddled around her trailer's fireplace in a semi-circle while she sits casually on the floor in the middle, digital recorders strewn before her.  The iPhone with the bedazzled case featuring the signature red and white Umbrella Corporation logo?  Yeah, that's hers.

Jovovich is prepping for a big showdown sequence today on the set of Resident Evil: Retribution.  A stand-off situation that will ultimately transpire into a guns a-blazin', fists a-flyin' brawl between her character, Alice, and Sienna Guillory's Jill Valentine.  And her excitement hasn't wavered.  Not after nearly 10 years of living with the Resident Evil franchise, moreover, Alice - a woman who woke up in a ominous mansion, rediscovered some of her past, learned she was infected with the T-virus, had made friends, seen friends die and fought off endless waves of zombies and assorted creatures, big and small.
