Shock Till You Drop recently spoke with John Gulager, winner of Bravo’s Project Greenlight and director of the Feast trilogy.

In our discussion, Gulager dishes the details on his latest directorial effort, Piranha 3DD, which hits DVD and 3D Blu-ray tomorrow (September 4th). The sequel finds Gulager reteaming with fellow Project Greenlight alums Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.

John discusses the camp value of Piranha 3DD, taking the reins from Alexandre Aja, and trying to comply with slasher film conventions while keeping things interesting for horror fans.

Having awoken from their spring break extravaganza at Lake Victoria, the swarm heads upstream where they look to make a meal out of Big Wet, a local water park where when it comes to fun, nobody does it wetter! Thought they came to get wet, get loaded and get some, the staff and patrons get more than they bargained for when they must face the fiercest, most bloodthirsty piranhas yet. Lead by the strong-willed, studious Maddy and her friends, Barry and Kyle, the trio must dive in and take on these man-eating creatures using every ounce of their being...but can they be stopped?

Tomorrow, Piranha 3DD opens in an apparent "limited" theatrical release.  It's only opening in 75 theaters.  Now, while we work on getting you a theater listing, Dimension Films and Starz Digital Media have issued an official press release about its theatrical/VOD bow.  You see, even if it's not coming to a theater near you tomorrow...you'll be able to rent the movie.  Here is the official word:

Starz Digital Media, the digital and on-demand licensing arm of Starz Media, LLC, and Dimension Films announced that Piranha 3DD, the sequel to the surprise 2010 hit, Piranha 3D, will be available on-demand and online for VOD rentals day and date with its June 1st theatrical release. The Piranha 3DD day-and-date theatrical/VOD launch is the first Dimension Films release to venture into this trendsetting release model, the first collaboration between Dimension Films and Starz Digital Media, and the first ever available for a 3D movie.

Ferocious fish return to the big screen again in Piranha 3DD, opening in theaters - and on VOD - this Friday.  Shock Till You Drop sat down with director John Gulager (Feast) and stars Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th) and David Koechner (Final Destination 5) to discuss this gory, zany sequel which also stars Chris Zylka (My Super Psycho Sweet 16), Katrina Bowden (Tucker and Dale Versus Evil) and Ving Rhames.

TWC Games, a division of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, unveiled its new take on horror with Piranha 3DD, an action adventure game now available for iOS and Android. 

The game is based on the movie, opening this Friday, and takes place two years after the original Piranha 3D, where scores of prehistoric man-eating fish terrorized the coast of Lake Victoria. Now that the swarm of vicious piranhas has a taste for blood, they head upstream and slip their way into a newly opened water park where players will take the role of the bloodthirsty school of predators as they troll the shallow shores in search of soft morsels of helpless prey. This time, nothing and no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of the summer’s best attraction, The Big Wet Water Park. 

Ready for a clip that encapsulates the goofiness of Piranha 3DD?  Well, here you go.  Hulu premiered a new snippet from the June 1st theatrical/VOD release and, once again, it features David Hasselhoff, this time springing into action in the midst of a piranha attack.  The sequel to Alex Aja's film reunites the Feast team of director John Gulager and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.  For more, click on the title link above.  Head inside for the clip.

Strangest promo clip for a film yet? Dimension Films has provided us with a Gary Busey outtake and blooper reel which finds the actor in a EPK room and on the set talking Piranha 3DD.  Well, sort of talking about it.  Busey has a small part in the sequel, directed by John Gulager and opening in theaters and on VOD June 1st.  Enjoy...

David Hasselhoff proves he's got game in a clip from Piranha 3DD, the sequel hitting theaters and VOD on June 1st.

The Hoff plays himself in the film and is hired to make a celebrity guest appearance at the story's Big Wet water park.  Naturally, he doesn't count on vicious prehistoric piranha slaughtering the park's guests.  In the clip, it's the calm before the storm and the Hoff is chillin' with some ladies.

The sequel to Alex Aja's remake is scheduled to hit theaters and VOD on June 1st.  How wide the film is going to go is unknown right now.

Reps at Dimension Films have confirmed to Shock Till You Drop that Piranha 3DD is going to be dropped into the summer madness.  The official release date is now June 1st.  This will put the film up against Snow White and the Huntsman; Prometheus opens a week later.

A good window for a release?  Perhaps, it will fill a certain void that weekend - it's a summer movie about hot kids wearing next to nothing and doing crazy stuff during the summer until the killer fish crash their party.

There is no shortage of boobs, butts, sexual innuendo and voracious fish in this preview, which you'll find after the break.  It looks like the fish in this one can go just about anywhere they want...including a bathtub.  And it certainly appears Gulager, Dunstan and Melton tapped into their insane Feast sensibility where anything can happen.

While we await a release date for John Gulager's follow-up to Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD, it looks like two posters have reared their ugly heads.  Mind you, we've seen fan art hit the web, but Shock Till You Drop has confirmed that what you see after the jump are international posters.

Okay, now that we've cleared up that Piranha 3DD is indeed coming to theaters this year, can we move on and look at the pretty people starring in the film?

Dimension Films passed along a sneak peek at the cover of February's MAXIM featuring Katrina Bowden.  We're fans.  And maybe when you see the photo inside, you'll become a fan, too.

Over the holiday period, word spread - thanks to attention drawn to an outdated British home video site - Piranha 3DD was getting a direct-to-DVD release overseas.  Of course, concern followed: Would the sequel get similar treatment here on U.S. soil?  The answer is "No" and director John Gulager dropped by Shock with a message for the fans.  Head inside for a production update from the man behind the Feast films, he's got some good news to share...

Piranha 3DD isn't having very much luck in its journey to the screen.

The John Gulager-directed follow-up to 2010's Piranha 3D was originally scheduled to open in November until Dimension Films yanked it from the 2011 release line-up.  In the UK, it appears it is going to bypass theaters completely and head direct-to-DVD.

According to the British Video Association website, Piranha 3DD will debut on DVD March 19.  If you look at the site's listing, you'll see under the heading "Theatrical Release (3D)" it was "pulled from schedule." BVA also hosts the following synopsis for the film...
