To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

WonderCon: Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim Panel

Saturday, March 30, 2013
Guillermo del Toro took to the stage at the Anaheim Convention Center today for a WonderCon panel focusing on his upcoming sci-fi actioner Pacific Rim.
Featuring a cast that includes Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and more, Pacific Rim takes place in a not-too-distant-future where humanity has come under attack from enormous monsters known as Kaiju. To combat the creatures, all the nations of the world have constructed mechanical colossuses called Jaegers.
The panel opened with a brand-new trailer that del Toro said was constructed specifically for WonderCon and isn't planned for release anywhere else (besides one more screening of it at the upcoming CinemaCon). With a tagline, "Go big or go extinct," the trailer offered quite a few shots that has the audience screaming with excitement including one where a Jaeger actually drags a oil tanker out of the ocean and, lifting it up like a bat, swings it into a Kaiju attacker.

Six Genre Movies I'm Eager to See in 2013
Ryan Turek
Monday, December 31, 2012
This piece was originally posted in November, but with 2013 nearly upon us...why not dust it off?
My annual "most anticipated" list is upon us - I'm just switching up the headline to make it a bit more personal as the following titles, yes, represent the movies I'm eager to see in 2013. Now, I've done this long enough to know I have to set down certain criteria or run the risk of comments like, "You idiot! What about [insert title here]? I'm excited about it and you should be, too!"
Here is how this list breaks down.
The following represent films that have locked release dates. It also represents films I have not seen - that means You're Next and Maniac are off the list (but both come recommended). If it's not on the list, I've either seen it or I just don't give a damn. There are some films that are either shooting now or are in post-production that are likely to hit in the latter half of 2013, but that's not for certain, so those are off the list, too. I'll make mention of a few "in the works" titles I'm curious about at the end.
That said, head inside for my random thoughts on what is to come and what's getting me excited. We'll start with my #1 pick...
Before There Was Pacific Rim... Dan Brereton Wants to Remind You About Giantkiller
Ryan Turek
Thursday, December 13, 2012
It has been a big week for 2013 sneak peeks and what a lot of people are talking about right now is Guillermo del Toro's robots versus monsters flick Pacific Rim. There is one unhappy camper out there, however, who is pushing to get some eyes on a project he created that bears a resemblance to Pacific Rim.
Dan Brereton (creator of "The Nocturnals") took to Facebook this morning to vent and inform his followers about "Giantkiller."
"I know quite a few of you have seen GIANTKILLER, and read it, but I'm a little glum about a certain giant-monster movie being promoted right now that bears a huge resemblance to my 1999 mini-series, coming along and hurting our existing screenplay for the movie adaptation of my kaijus-from-a-wormhole story," he writes.

Boom! Goes the Awesome Trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim
Ryan Turek
Wednesday, December 12, 2012
Monsters, robots...and Jax! Oh my! The official trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim has hit us with a mighty blow. This is Del Toro's first feature since giving us 2008's Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Since then, he's been shepherding various projects as a producer. Also taking up his time? The two potential directing vehicles that slipped out of his hands (The Hobbit, At the Mountains of Madness).
Regardless, Del Toro is back and Pacific Rim is here to sear the flesh off of your face with pure "win." I'm loving what I'm seeing. I like that the pilots of the robots (known as Jaegers) have to work in unison. And I like that the robot action is robot action you can understand (lookin' at you, Transformers). Would I like to see more monsters? Absolutely. But this is great so far.
In the film, legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea and begin a war that would takes millions of lives and consumes humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. Guillermo del Toro Talks Ghost Tale Crimson Peak
Ryan Turek
Tuesday, December 04, 2012
This week, two significant things have happened in the world of Guillermo del Toro. First, news broke that Del Toro would return to the realm of horror and direct Crimson Peak. That was followed with the buzz he would supervise the writing of Pacific Rim 2, a sequel to his summer 2013 offering Pacific Rim.
Both Crimson Peak and all things Pacific Rim reside at Legendary and I have to wonder if the sequel will take priority over Peak. If the supernatural chiller does go into production in early 2014 as anticipated, here's a bit of what we can expect - Del Toro took to the message boards of DelToroFilms.com to explain.

Legendary and Warner Bros. have been going teaser crazy the last two days for Pacific Rim. Today, the fourth blue print for another Jaeger (one of the giant robots featured in the film) surfaced at Your Movies, an Australian film site.
So far, each Jaeger design - see three more here - have specifically debuted at the countries they hail from in the story.
Australia's Jaeger is "Striker Eureka" - get a look at this bad-ass inside.
We're less than two weeks away from seeing a trailer debut for Guillermo del Toro's latest effort opening in 2D/3D July 12, 2013. Stay tuned!

Earlier today, we were presented with a test warning for the Kaiju Emergency Alert Systerm promoting Guillermo del Toro's new movie Pacific Rim, but it is no longer just a test. Another video from the same YouTube account has been posted that shows a news report of a Kaiju attacking San Francisco (the first place highlighted on the Pan Pacific Defense Corps Map).
This is our first glimpse at the Kaiju from Pacific Rim and you can watch it inside!
Also within, a blueprint for one of the Jaegers. Awesome!
In the film, legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea and begin a war that would takes millions of lives and consumes humanity’s resources for years on end.

Imagine waking up one morning, sipping on some coffee and watching the morning news when...a test of the emergency alert system interupts the broadcast warning of a kaiju attack. In the world of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, that scenario is a possibility.
We're still a ways off from the film's release, but the viral campaign for the "giant monsters vs. the world" epic is chugging along. It began with a propaganda poster and continues with a "kaiju emergency alert system video" - which originated at this brand new site (where you'll find a countdown to the trailer premiere!) - and "leaked memo" (courtesy of Total Film) that comes from the Great Britain Air Command and addressed to a Lt. Col. Takada.
You'll defintiely want to see both inside.
Opening July 12th, the film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff.

I suppose only those who saw the Pacific Rim Comic-Con footage could answer that headline, however, there's a video going around right now for the FX outfit Mirada and it features a shot of a giant robot - or "Jaeger" - that may or may not be from Guillermo del Toro's aforementioned film.
Mirada is a boutique production house co-founded by Del Toro, so that backs up suspicion that this may be connected to the film, even if it is an early FX test. You'll find the video inside; the footage in question arrives 1:15 in.
Pacific Rim opens July 12, 2013 and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi.

Today was the first full day of the New York Comic-Con and for us, it began with an announcement at the Legendary Comics booth by editor-in-chief Bob Schreck about two new comics they'd be publishing in 2013, including a prequel comic to Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, written by the movie's screenwriter Travis Beacham, and a new six-issue series by Grant Morrison called "Annihilator." We're going to focus on the former, which will act as a prequel to the movie starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi.
Guillermo also updated us on some of his other projects in the works, including Disney's Haunted Mansion, on which they plan on hiring a new writer soon to help get it moving forward.
