Review: Hitchcock

After having huge success with North by Northwest, 60-year-old filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock (Sir Anthony Hopkins) reads Robert Bloch's novel "Psycho," based on the serial murders by Ed Gein, and becomes obsessed with making it his next film, to the point of funding it with his own money. Meanwhile, his wife Alma (Helen Mirren) is having her own issues as she feels she's losing her husband to the film's nubile starlets, so she decides to work on her own project with a good-looking younger writer (Danny Huston).
Movielovers' endless fascination with the stars and filmmakers of yesteryear has led to many decent films like last year's My Week with Marilyn and Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles.
Directed by Sacha Gervasi of Anvil! fame, Hitchcock offers a similar thrill of getting inside the head of the famously eclectic filmmaker during one of his most creative phases. Despite being based on the novel "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho," this isn't just about the making of the filmmaker's most successful thriller as much as it's about the stress put on his marriage by his decision to make said movie.

Hitchcock Weighs in On Theater Cell Phone Use in This PSA

Monday, October 15, 2012
Fox Searchlight has released a PSA about cell phone use in movie theaters, however, this one ties in to Hitchcock, so you have Alfred Hitchcock - as played by Anthony Hopkins - talking about what makes him "psycho." (Get it? Get it?)
The PSA is shot using a cell phone in a movie theater.

As someone that spent the better part of three years making an exhaustive documentary about the Psycho franchise, there was nothing more surreal then turning the corner off of 6th Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, walking up Broadway and seeing in bold red letters the word PSYCHO displayed on the marquee of the Palace Theater, doubling here for the world famous Demille Theater in New York City circa 1960.
As I got closer and reached the entrance of the theater, I was taken aback by the dozen or so theatrical one-sheet posters for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho that I’d seen a million times before, but something was off about this version of the iconic image. It wasn’t Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh or Vera Miles displayed on these posters, but instead it was actors James D’Arcy, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel (respectively) in their place.

New Poster for Hitchcock Takes the Psycho Approach
Ryan Turek
Tuesday, October 09, 2012
A new one-sheet for Hitchcock, which looks at a slice of Alfred Hitchcock's life and the making of Psycho, has premiered at EW and the latest art takes a very Psycho-esque approach. Sacha Gervasi's film opens in theaters November 23rd from Fox Searchlight and stars Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson and Jessical Biel.
On another note, doesn't it feel like this film just wrapped recently? Hitchcock faced a very quick turnaround, it seems, and I'm presuming the release date was pushed up once it was revealed HBO's Hitchcock project, The Girl, locked in an air date (for later this month).
