On the Set of Hemlock Grove: Interviews With the Cast & Crew

Friday, April 19, 2013

Hemlock Grove isn’t like most small communities. When a teenage girl is murdered, two boys - Roman Godrey (Bill Skarsgard), the spoiled and possibly vampiric heir to the Godfrey estate, and Peter Rumancek (Landon Liboiron), a gypsy traveler and werewolf – step up to solve the shocking crime. As the investigation unfolds, though, the steel town’s deep, dark secrets come to light. Nothing is as it seems and the lines quickly begin to blur over whether Hemlock Grove’s monsters are supernatural – or just really twisted humans.

Hemlock Gove is the second original series from Netflix, which has now made 13 episodes available. The show is based on the novel of the same name by Brian McGreevy, who serves as the series' writer and executive producer. Hostel’s horror maverick, Eli Roth, is also an executive producer, and obviously has an exuberant passion and enthusiasm for the genre.

“What Eli brings is such a great, offbeat sensibility to it all, that we all hung onto, which continues to go through the whole series and doesn’t leave,” says executive producer and director Deran Sarafian to several visiting journalists. “I was on from the beginning to listen to the stories. Along with Brian and Lee [Shipman], we would watch movies all the time. And we started with Rosemary’s Baby, because there’s a very dark sense of humor in Rosemary’s Baby that we have in this show. Even The Shining has a sense of humor to it, but you need a very visceral dark experience, and that’s what we kept hanging on to.”

Through the investigation, the town’s seamier side is exposed, revealing nothing is what it seems.  Roth also helmed episode one.

Review: Hemlock Grove

Monday, April 15, 2013

By now most if not all of us have probably spent a weekend binge-watching a show. Last summer this writer spent a few days devouring 3+ seasons of Breaking Bad after neglecting to watch the show upon its initial release. It can be a lot of fun with the right show, and it sure beats having to wait a week or more for the next new episode. Already providing viewers with plenty of binge-viewing options, Netflix is doing the same with its original programs. Their second series, Hemlock Grove, debuts on Friday, April 19th. All 13 episodes will immediately be available.

The series, executive produced by Eli Roth and based on a novel by Brian McGreevy, is a somewhat awkward hybrid of Twin Peaks and True Blood with a little class warfare mixed in. There’s a murder mystery and a small town that has fallen on hard times full of people with secrets and strange powers. And while it isn’t without interest, having seen the first 3 episodes, Hemlock Grove is too much like an R-rated CW series and not nearly as disturbing or involving as shows like Hannibal and Bates Motel

Monday, April 01, 2013

Last Friday, everyone was buzzing about the big werewolf transformation of Hemlock Grove, Netflix's adaptation of the Brian McGreevy novel.

ShockTillYouDrop.com spoke with executive producer Eli Roth (who directed the first episode as well) briefly about this transformation which appears in an episode directed by Deran Serafian.

Serafian is where our conversation with Roth began because, in case the name doesn't jump out at you, Serafian spent the early days of his career on the Italian horror scene before going on to produce shows like House M.D.

Inside, Roth talks about the werewolf transformation, why gore has gone mainstream on television and offers an update on his cannibal film The Green Inferno.  All 13 episodes of Hemlock Grove season one will be available exclusively on Netflix beginning April 19th.

Event Coverage: Eli Roth & Brian McGreevy Talk Hemlock Grove

Monday, April 16, 2012

With The Walking Dead raising record numbers for its second season finale, and American Horror Story fans eager for its re-conceptualized return, there’s a glut of horror-oriented TV in the pipeline, including Hannibal, Mockingbird Lane (The Munsters revamp), 666 Park Avenue, and an Untitled Kevin Williamson pilot.

Come January, when one or two of these titles will likely be on the chopping block, Hemlock Grove will premiere with not just a single hour, but an entire thirteen-episode season, available for marathon viewing. But unlike the above-mentioned shows, you won’t be able to DVR it.

Hemlock Grove, executive produced by Eli Roth and Brian McGreevy (author of the novel it’s based on, along with a handsomely drawn prequel comic), will be available exclusively on Netflix Instant.  The Pennsylvania-set series will explore biotechnology run amok, gypsies and billionaires, teenage sex, adult sex, a murder mystery, psychic manipulation closer to Jesse Custer’s Word of God more than Jedi mind tricks, a girl claiming impregnation by an angel, a boy who feels a testicular tingle when things are about to get hairy, arranged meet-ups with prostitutes in malls, an “Elephant Girl” who writes hyper-articulate emails but never speaks, a special agent from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting some seriously big game, and the practice of ingesting a worm from a corpse to channel the spirit of the deceased. Oh, and a werewolf and a maybe-vampire (as with The Hunger and Near Dark, “vampire” is never uttered).

The book is a quick, cutting read recommended for fans of transgressive fiction as much as horror.  There’s nothing twee, ‘tween or teen about it.  But that hasn’t stopped knee-jerk Twilight comparisons at the very mention of mythical monsters who happen to be in high school.

Eli Roth and Brian McGreevy sat for a spirited panel discussion and Q&A at New York’s 92YTribeca last week, confident that those dismissing the show based on its familiar subject matter will come to embrace it.

Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgard to Star in Eli Roth's Hemlock Grove

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Hemlock Grove, a novel by Brian McGreevy that is hitting stores later this month, is getting adapted for Netflix.  Famke Janssen and Bill Skarsgard are set to star for Gaumont International Television.  The series will be available for Netflix members to watch instantly, beginning early in 2013.

Eli Roth (Hostel) will direct.

Hemlock Grove starts with the body of a young girl, mangled and murdered in the shadow of the former Godfrey steel mill. Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a biotech facility owned by the former steel magnates. Others believe the killer could be Peter, a 17-year-old Gypsy kid from the wrong side of the tracks, who tells his classmates he's a werewolf. Or it could be Roman (Skarsgard), the arrogant Godfrey scion, whose sister Shelley is disturbingly deformed and whose mother, Olivia (Janssen), the otherworldly beautiful and controlling grand dame of Hemlock Grove.

As the crime goes unsolved and outlandish rumors mount, Peter and Roman decide to find the killer themselves, confronting unspeakable truths about themselves and Hemlock Grove as the mystery unfolds.
