A New Set Photo Hints at Godzilla's Path of Destruction

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Legendary has tweeted a new image from the set of Gareth Edwards' upcoming Godzilla and it implies that we'll see the evacuation of the Farallon Islands, an area of land roughly 30 miles from the coast of San Francisco, where an attack by the Kaiju beast has been confirmed for the 2014 release. If we're to assume that Godzilla is moving west to east in the film, it's a good bet (although unconfirmed) that the creature's origins will fall somewhere in the vicinity of Japan.

Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston and Sally Hawkins, Godzilla hits the big screen May 16, 2014.

Godzilla Filming Locations Revealed

Monday, March 18, 2013

Canada.com has revealed that the production for the remake of Godzilla has found a home and it's in the city of Nanaimo in British Columbia. Here are the details they've revealed:

Gareth Edward's sci-fi reboot of the city-destroying Godzilla is being filmed across Vancouver Island this March, from Nanaimo's Old Victoria Road to Ladysmith and Shawnigan Lake. More than 300 crew members are expected to land in the Harbour City for the eight-day central Island shoot and have pledged to use local extras, staff and equipment.

The film, whose working title is Nautilus, did a casting call in February for extras and recently notified residents along Old Victoria Road that filming is about to begin. Joan Miller, the North Island film commissioner, says Vancouver Island will make up the first shots for the new take on the legendary radioactive monster, which is set to hit theatres next year. Crews will stay in Nanaimo hotels for three days while they shoot the scenes downtown and Ladysmith area before they move onto Shawnigan Lake.

Elizabeth Olsen Hints at Godzilla's Somber Tone

Monday, February 11, 2013

Word broke just days ago that Elizabeth Olsen was up for a role in Gareth Edward's upcoming reboot of the Godzilla franchise and, today, Olsen confirmed her involvement in the project on the BAFTA red carpet.

"It's definitely not lighthearted," Olsen says of Edwards' take. "It's kind of going back to its roots of the original Japanese film."

The 1954 original was directed by Ishirô Honda and the Godzilla character (originally Gojira) was designed to serve as an allegory for nuclear weapons. Especially compared to some of the campier sequels that would follow, Godzilla is a decidedly somber film and it appears that that tone will be emulated in Edwards' version.

Darabont: New Godzilla a 'Terrifying Force of Nature'

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

It was announced earlier this month that Frank Darabont has joined Gareth Edward's upcoming Godzilla as a screenwriter. Today, in an interview with io9, Darabont speaks about what he hopes to bring to the reimagined franchise.

"What I found very interesting about Godzilla is that he started off definitely as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki," he explains. "And some of the atom bomb testing we were doing in the South Pacific in the subsequent years. The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the s--t out of your city, that was Godzilla… What we're trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy."

Producer Dan Lin on the Godzilla Remake

Thursday, December 20, 2012

We haven't heard much about Godzilla since the teaser trailer premiered at Comic-Con this summer, but it won't be long before we start seeing more.

"We’re planning to film in March," producer Dan Lin told Collider. "We are in deep pre-production.  Gareth [Edwards] has really mapped out his vision for the movie, you saw the teaser, but Gareth thanks to Thomas Tull’s help he took over a whole stage on the Warner Brothers lot and not only showed the teaser you saw, he had some models built of Godzilla, he had art decorated all over the soundstage, he had pre-vis of some of the big action sequences in the movie.  So we’re in deep pre-production and Gareth’s vision of the movie is really exciting it’s a true re-boot of Godzilla.  And you saw from the Comic-Con footage it is a grounded, realistic version of Godzilla.  What would happen if Godzilla came into our world today?"

New Godzilla Movie to Be "Realistic"...

Monday, October 08, 2012

Based on what we heard about the footage screened for Godzilla at this year's Comic-Con, it sounded unlike any Godzilla movie we've really seen before and the director of the new film, Gareth Edwards, aims to keep it that way. When talking to Total Film (via Coventry Telegraph), Edwards said:

"I've always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine 'If this really happened, what would it be like?' I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film."

They also asked him about getting the visual effects and creature design right and he had a unique answer.

Rejected Godzilla Concept Art is Revealed

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

When Legendary Pictures announced a new Godzilla film for 2012 (which will now likely be 2013 or 2014), all manner of supposed concept art and maquettes for the big lizard popped up.  And they were all bunk, proven to be fan art or old model kits.

In comes G-Fan - the magazine for all things Godzilla and kaiju - to the rescue.  The mag has run two pieces of concept art for Godzilla that shows one rejected design.  Unlike Roland Emmerich's Godzilla, this approach at least tries to stay true to the original design we've all come to known and love.
