Evil Dead Possesses the Box Office, Takes Number One Spot
Ryan Turek
Sunday, April 07, 2013
The Evil Dead remake is the number one movie in America. The film, directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by the original Evil Dead trilogy's team - Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert - began early screenings at 10pm Thursday night.
On opening night, the film took in $11.9 million. It's cumulative weekend gross was $26 million, putting that at the top of the box office chart, beating Jurassic Park 3D which grossed an estimated $18.2 million.
Evil Dead's weekend performance beat out the original trilogy's cumulative gross at the box office (naturally).
Review: Evil Dead
Ryan Turek
Friday, April 05, 2013

If you've read article after article about the Evil Dead here at Shock, it doesn't take much to put together that I really, truly enjoyed this movie. I think it's savage, creepy and beautiful to look at. We did have a review come out of SXSW and it was rather unfavorable, so figured I'd balance it out with my own thoughts - and I'll keep them brief sans the usual "this is what the whole movie is about."
Time and time again, we've seen the "cabin in the woods" scenario play out in the genre. This hit its peak, I believe, with appropriately-titled The Cabin in the Woods. After that film's release, where else was there to go? What more was there to say about this particular go-to situation for so many writers and directors? The answer, in Evil Dead's case, is to go as visceral as possible.

WonderCon Interview: Evil Dead's Lou Taylor Pucci Exhibits His Fanboy Side
Ryan Turek
Monday, April 01, 2013
This weekend, audiences will most likely be screaming at the screen at one man when they go to see Evil Dead: Lou Taylor Pucci. It's no secret that his character opens the Book of the Dead and reads from its pages (much to the chagrin of theater-goers who will be yelling "Don't do that!" before he actually does what they're telling him not to do), thus setting off the bloody chain of events that unfold in the film.
Pucci, as it turns out, is a big horror fan and we got him fired up talking about the Evil Dead at WonderCon over the weekend.
There are ever-so-slight spoilers. Honestly, I don't see them as such, but there are sensitive individuals out there who may take issue with the brief chat inside. So, just covering our ass here!

The panel began with a new trailer created exclusively for WonderCon. Very similar to the recent Red Band version, this one offered some alternate shots and the tagline, "Once you unleash evil, it will consume you. Fear what you will become."

Wednesday, March 27, 2013
Anticipation has been building for the release of Evil Dead, what's likely to be the goriest horror movie of the year, and last month, after the movie's rousing premiere at the South by SouthWest Film Festival, ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to sit down with the five main cast members - Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore - as well as director Fede Alvarez and producers Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert, for a couple quick interviews to talk about making the movie.
If you haven't seen the original 1981 movie, the new version involves the same premise of five college age friends who go out to a cabin in the woods only to find the Book of the Dead in the basement, which leads to all sorts of craziness.

Three More Photos from Evil Dead

Wednesday, March 20, 2013
There's a distinct difference between "screen grabs" and official publicity shots from a film that were taken on set. Evil Dead has been making everyone go screen grab crazy as they pass them off for "new stills" (no, they're just shots we've seen in the trailer). Anyway, that little rant aside, three new photos from the have crossed our desk and you can find them inside.

Editorial: Why Sam Raimi Decided it Was Time to Remake Evil Dead
Tyler Doupe
Wednesday, March 13, 2013
With the release date for the Evil Dead remake drawing closer, we at ShockTillYouDrop.com have taken it upon ourselves to reflect on Sam Raimi’s controversial decision to redo one of the most notorious horror films of all time. Head inside for our thoughts on the remake, insight from the set, and more.
Sam Raimi has been a long time proponent of remaking Evil Dead. In fact, Raimi’s initial desire to reboot the film dates all the way back to 2004. The news of Raimi’s intent to re-imagine Evil Dead was originally announced then, but it has been a nine year journey to get the film made and into theaters.
At one point, Stoker director Park Chan-wook was reportedly approached to direct. That ultimately didn’t pan out and up-and-comer Fede Alvarez was tapped to direct the redux. Alvarez first garnered media attention with his short film Panic Attack!
No Evil Dead 4…. Army of Darkness 2!
Edward Douglas
Saturday, March 09, 2013
Last night at the post-premiere Q&A for the South by SouthWest Film Festival premiere of Evil Dead, director Fede Alvarez revealed that they're already writing the sequel to the remake, which we're going to dub Evil Dead 2 until a better title comes along.
But just last week, Sam Raimi revealed that he and his brother Ted are working on a screenplay for an Evil Dead 4, which would presumably follow the further adventures of Bruce Campbell's Ash Williams.
Could they have been talking about the same project or is it possible that sometime in the future we may have competing Evil Dead franchises, both involving Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell? Not exactly.
SXSW Review: Evil Dead
Joshua Starnes
Saturday, March 09, 2013

We've all heard the story before. There's a cabin in the woods, off the beaten path. It's alone and isolated - the perfect place for some kids looking to get away from it all. Little do they know that something dark and hideous is lurking in those woods.
It's not just because this is a remake of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead that we know this story. It's the basis for more scary campfire stories and '80s horror movies than you can shake a sharpened, gore-drenched stick at. As horror plots go, it's somewhere up there with "it was a dark and stormy night." It's not for nothing that the original Evil Dead picked that particular cliché to build its story around. There is little quite as entertaining as the familiar doing what you expect exactly as you expect it. Raimi and company back in the 1980s counted on that fact to make their first feature financially successful (a film's primary goal after all). Raimi and company in 2013 are still counting on that fact.
Work Has Begun On a Script for Evil Dead 2

Some breaking news out of SXSW where we have a few reporters on the scene at the very first public screening for the Evil Dead remake.
Director Fede Alvarez told the crowd this evening that they have begun writing Evil Dead 2. Yes, a sequel to the remake is "officially" in the works. That demonstrates the studio (Sony, in this case) is confident in the remake, as are the producers (Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell) - and they should be given the response the film received tonight in Austin, Texas.

Evil Dead and The Lords of Salem Get Their Official Ratings

"Strong bloody violence and gore, some sexual content and language." That's what got the official R rating for the Evil Dead remake, opening April 12th.
We ran a report yesterday stating that the MPAA slapped the film with an NC-17. Bodes well, because it means Fede Alvarez isn't f**king around. But it also means that he had to make some cuts to get an R rating so the film could be released.
As I said, expect a bloodier director's cut on Blu-ray at some point.

Sunday, January 20, 2013
You've seen the red band trailer for the upcoming Evil Dead remake; now we have the green band cut. And, as you can imagine, this trailer has had its balls clipped and no longer has the gory mayhem that made us cheer during the red band preview, but they may have slipped in one or two new shots to make up for that. (Plus, it's still pretty awesome.)

On the Set of Evil Dead: Jane Levy Talks Challenges of the Remake
Tyler Doupe
Tuesday, January 08, 2013
In the first part of our report from the forthcoming Evil Dead remake, we toured the New Zealand set and spoke with star Lou Taylor Pucci and producer Rob Tapert. With part two, a tease of a scene I saw on set as well as highlights from our discussion with actress Jane Levy, who undergoes a terrifying transformation in the film!
While on set, we had a chance to observe director Fede Alvarez and the cast and crew conducting movie making magic. We caught a scene where a cast member (we won't divulge who due to spoilers) has become possessed by evil and he beckons to a fellow cast member.
“Join us. Joooiiiinnnn Uuuusssss," he says.
We saw that scene shot over and over again until Fede had gotten it from every angle and was satisfied with the dialogue. It’s clear, from watching him work, that Alvarez is a perfectionist and is concerned with making the absolute best film possible.
Recreating Evil: On the Set of the Evil Dead

Monday, January 07, 2013
As soon as the Evil Dead remake was announced, the fan backlash ensued.
Message boards were filled with critical comments. Everyone wanted to know why it was necessary to remake the terrifying classic from 1981. Fortunately, the creative team behind Evil Dead 2013 has their wits about them and they aren't trying to top or outdo the original. They are working to make a scary, dark and haunting film that will take some of its inspiration from the ideas explored in the original Evil Dead film, but do it in a way that retells the story for audiences 30 years later. The remake is going to pay homage to the original, but, it's quite clear that no one is trying to do any disservice to it.
ShockTillYouDrop.com had the opportunity to visit the set of Evil Dead in Auckland, New Zealand.
We got the scoop on the production process and details on the plot and tone from director Fede Alvarez and producer Rob Tapert. We also chatted with the cast.

Six Genre Movies I'm Eager to See in 2013
Ryan Turek
Monday, December 31, 2012
This piece was originally posted in November, but with 2013 nearly upon us...why not dust it off?
My annual "most anticipated" list is upon us - I'm just switching up the headline to make it a bit more personal as the following titles, yes, represent the movies I'm eager to see in 2013. Now, I've done this long enough to know I have to set down certain criteria or run the risk of comments like, "You idiot! What about [insert title here]? I'm excited about it and you should be, too!"
Here is how this list breaks down.
The following represent films that have locked release dates. It also represents films I have not seen - that means You're Next and Maniac are off the list (but both come recommended). If it's not on the list, I've either seen it or I just don't give a damn. There are some films that are either shooting now or are in post-production that are likely to hit in the latter half of 2013, but that's not for certain, so those are off the list, too. I'll make mention of a few "in the works" titles I'm curious about at the end.
That said, head inside for my random thoughts on what is to come and what's getting me excited. We'll start with my #1 pick...
The Poster for the Evil Dead Remake is a Braggart
Ryan Turek
Tuesday, November 20, 2012
We've seen the teaser trailer, now, how about you feast on a teaser poster for the Evil Dead remake (opening April 12, 2013)?
Giant "words" seem to be the fad in advertising as of late. And by that, I mean words painted on faces, words dominating the art...that sort of thing (see: The Social Network or something as most recent as the teaser posters for The Following).
This teaser poster screams that Evil Dead will be "The most terrifying film you will ever experience." Cool. I hope so. I'm not sure about the "image" that serves as the backdrop for the poster. Over-all, I suppose it's classy.

NYCC Exclusive: Evil Dead Interviews with Bruce Campbell & Jane Levy
Edward Douglas

One of the more exciting "gets" by the New York Comic Con this year was to be the place where Screen Gems debuted the very first footage from their upcoming remake of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell's horror classic Evil Dead.
Of course we all hate remakes by this point, but this one, like Screen Gems' Carrie (more on that later), seems to have promise that it'll live up to the expectations of fans of the original movies as well as scare the sh*t out of those who have never seen the three previous movies released between '81 and '92.
While Sam Raimi still wants to make another Evil Dead movie himself, he instead decided to find some fresh blood for the remake in Uruguyan director Fede Alvarez who impressed him with a short film he made for very little money. Besides a new director, they also have a new cast, led by Jane Levy, best known for her role on ABC's "Suburgatory," playing Mia, one of a group of 20-somethings who go to a remote cabin in the woods where they find a Book of the Dead in the cellar that calls forth demons that possesses them.
ShockTillYouDrop.com conducted exclusive interviews with producer and original star Bruce Campbell as well as the film's new star Jane Levy on Saturday. You can watch both interviews and get a brief description of the panel and footage shown after the jump.

Bruce Campbell Has Seen the Evil Dead Remake

Bruce Campbell is a straight shooter. He always speaks frankly - at least that's what I've found in my experience with him - and that's evident in an interview he participated in with Digital Spy. The subject, naturally, is next year's Evil Dead remake ("the" was dropped from the title).
Campbell served as a producer on the Fede Alvarez-directed redo alongside Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi so, it's not as if the property was placed into unfamiliar hands, still, that's not stopping the fans from being upset that the original film is even getting an update in the first place.
Campbell is well aware you're "pissed," folks, but he has something to say about the film now that he's seen a rough cut of it.
