Jae-hyuk is an ordinary man in his 40s. He works as a medical supplies salesman and is hassled by doctors all day. His brother Jae-pil is a detective that is not all that interested in public safety and spends most of his time moaning about the stock market. The discovery of a series of floating, gruesomely skeletal bodies around the country sparks hysteria. The police commissioner is disturbed to see CCTV footage of people jumping into water as if they were possessed, and drowning themselves. Time passes and hundreds of similar cases are reported, leaving officials stumped as to the cause of the deaths. The government declares a national emergency. Jae-pil joins the massive investigation and meets the mayor of a small town who claims he witnessed several men in work uniforms dumping infected dogs into the streams and realizes that there is a conspiracy behind the outbreak. Meanwhile, Jae-hyuk's wife and children are showing the same symptoms as the victims, leading to a frantic search for medicine. Through Jae-pil he learns of a warehouse containing a potential cure in thousands and thousands of doses and heads there with no idea of what he's heading into.

Our Podcast Returns! Listen to Shock Waves 2.1 Now!

Thursday, August 09, 2012

About six months ago, FEARnet's Lawrence Raffel and myself put the all-horror podcast we had been collaborating on, called Shock Waves, on hold.

A few factors into its hiatus (we knocked out 18 episodes consistently from July 2011 to January of this year), but nothing ever stays dead in this genre so we both agreed it was time to bring Shock Waves back, especially after the listener feedback asking when it would return.

Here's the rub.  All of our old episodes, from "season 1" we'll call them, are gone.  Lost to the Internet.  Don't ask me where they went, but they no longer exist, sadly.  We're starting "season 2" with a clean slate you might say.

In this installment, we're getting back into the groove of things.  We look at various horror movies we've liked and disliked in 2012 so far.  We also weigh in on the Korean import Deranged, now playing in select theaters.

Brian Collins (from BadAss Digest, Horror Movie a Day) swings by for a discussion about Halloween 4 and Halloween 5, two titles making their Blu-ray debut this month from Anchor Bay Entertainment.  How do the sequels featuring the iconic horror villain Michael Myers hold up?  Oh, we'll tell you...

All of this and much more in the Shock Waves relaunch!  Listen inside.

Something Deranged Is Opening in Theaters This Friday, Here's the U.S. Trailer

Monday, July 23, 2012

Deranged KoreaLooking for a break from the summer movie fare norm?  Well, there's a possibility Deranged - a new Korean horror film - is opening in a theater near you.

The flick, directed by Park Jeong-Woo (who last helmed a film called Big Bang in 2007), is opening this Friday, July 27th in limited release and we have the U.S. trailer to share after the jump.

Apparently, the film is a huge hit in South Korea, opening earlier this month at #1.  It looks harrowing enough as it concerns a parasite which infects drinking water and drives its host to suicide after some disconcerning symptoms.

South Korea's answer to last year's Contagion, perhaps?
