SXSW Review: Bates Motel

Monday, March 11, 2013

Even though South by SouthWest is primarily a film, music and interactive festival, television has started to creep in and A&E decided to use it as the venue to launch their new horror-drama Bates Motel which premieres on Monday, March 18 at 10PM.

Bates Motel follows in the footsteps of the latest TV horror trend behind FX's American Horror Story and AMC's The Walking Dead although it's also treading on dangerous ground by trying to create a prequel to the Alfred Hitchcock Psycho and the Norman Bates character as personified by Anthony Perkins. The intention of the series is to show Norman and his mother, as played by Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga, during their early days which ultimately lead up to how we find them in Psycho.

On Monday morning, March 11th, A&E screened the first of what's going to be a ten-episode season, which opens with Freddie Highmore's Norman Bates discovering his father has died, so his mother Norma (played by Vera Farmiga) buys the Seafairer Motel (sic) and the classic old house up in the hills as they try to settle into a new life after his father's death. Norman just wants to earn his mother's love and affection, which isn't something that's easily attained.

As someone who has seen the first episode, I can say it's pretty solid.  Farmiga and Highmore sell it with very good performances and it doesn't waste any time exploring the darkness of Norma and Norman.

Exclusive: 10 Things We Know About the Psycho Prequel TV Pilot Bates Motel

Thursday, August 30, 2012

A&E and Universal are at work to bring Norman Bates back to the screen, albeit on the small screen.  The former has ordered up a 10-episode run of Bates Motel, a new series that explores Norman Bates' life before Psycho.

This isn't the first time TV has taken a crack at Bates' legacy.  There was a television pilot from '87, starring Bud Cort, Lori Petty and Kurt Paul as Norman Bates, which was nixed rather fast.  And in 2007, Vertigo Entertainment Roy Lee and Doug Davison paired up with Lionsgate and Universal to bring Bates Motel to life.

Years later, showrunners Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) picked up the project and are now finally making it happen.  Recently, it was revealed Vera Farmiga was cast as Norma Bates, Norman's mother.  While we await word as to who is playing Norman himself, let us share with you what we have learned about the pilot episode based on a May 2012 draft of the script penned by Ehrin.

A&E Returns to the Bates Motel for a Psycho Prequel

Friday, January 13, 2012

A&E and Universal are developing a television series called Bates Motel which is, you guessed it, all about Norman Bates.

Funny, that it should take the title of the television pilot (a failed one at that) created in '87 that was supposed to pave the way for an anthology series.  Alas, it never got off the ground.  A&E's Bates Motel, on the other hand, will serve as a prequel story that delves into Norman's past.

Wait a second...they've already done that, too...
