Exclusive Video Interview: Shock Goes to the Magic Castle to Talk to the Aftershock Cast & Crew

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

For Nicolas Lopez’s first cross-over film, Aftershock, the Chilean director teams up with star and horror connoisseur Eli Roth. The natural disaster thriller centers on a group of sexy quasi-strangers partying it up in the heart of Chile’s nightlife scene only to have their fun cut short by a deadly earthquake. As their gruesome night unfolds, the crew (led by Roth’s earnest “Gringo” character) discovers the real threat isn’t Mother Nature; it’s human nature. Even more terrifying: the events were partly inspired by a real quake that hit Santiago, Chile in 2010.

We sat down with the stars and filmmaker at LA’s legendary Magic Castle to talk survival kits, what it’s like to experience an earthquake while clubbing and the “natural disaster” that are Roth’s dance moves. It’s a bloody rollercoaster of a ride that sets itself apart from the genre’s typical, CGI-inflated doomsday fare and will definitely have you re-stocking those emergency kits. Thermal blankets and bottled water, anyone?

Exclusive: Nicolas López on his Chilean Disaster Flick, Aftershock

Monday, May 06, 2013

Nicolas López's Aftershock isn't a horror movie as much as it's a disaster movie filled with the kinds of horrors that take place in a real natural disaster - in this case the horrifying 6.2 aftershock that hit Chile in the summer of 2010 that prompted Lopez and Hostel creator Eli Roth to collaborate on a movie that explores horror from a very real place.

It follows as group of individuals, two connected locals and four tourists traveling through the Santiago, Chile travel and party scene, going from cemeteries to big dance parties and seeing the beautiful city. One of the tourists, an American simply referred to as "Gringo" is played by Roth himself, a divorcee on the look to meet women and having three beautiful choices in Andrea Osvárt, Lorenza Izzo and Natasha Yarovenko. Leading the band is Nicolás Martínez's Pollo, a local player who means well but tends to get them into trouble every way of the turn. And then the earthquake hits.

TIFF Exclusive: Eli Roth on Aftershock and More

Thursday, September 13, 2012

There are few bigger success stories that have come out of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) than filmmaker Eli Roth, who brought both Cabin Fever and the original Hostel to TIFF in 2002 and 2005 respectively.

This year, Roth was back in Toronto with Chilean filmmaker Nicolás López and a movie they co-wrote called Aftershock in which Eli Roth stars as an American in Santiago, Chile, spending a night on the town with his two friends and three beautiful women. They’re all having fun until an earthquake suddenly hits and they have to find a way to survive both the quake and all the terror that arises after it hits, things like escaped convicts and looters. Oh, and it also has a cameo by Selena Gomez.

Shock Till You Drop sat down with Roth to find out how this connection to Chile, where he’ll be shooting much of his next film The Green Inferno, came about as well as talking briefly about some of his other projects, including a year-round haunted house in Las Vegas called Eli Roth's Goretorium, which opens later this month.
