Remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 film about a newcomer to a fancy ballet academy who gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.
Raise a hand if you were looking forward to a remake of Suspiria? No one? Okay, moving on… David Gordon Green – the director in line to tackle an update of Dario Argento’s classic – doesn’t seem optimistic it will happen.
Crime Scene Pictures announced back in May of 2012 that Isabelle Fuhrman, Isabelle Huppert, Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist and Antje Traue were going to star. Still with a cast in place, there’s something holding the project up.
Isabelle Fuhrman (The Hunger Games, Orphan) is set to headline David Gordon Green’s Suspiria, Crime Scene Pictures announced today. The just-revealed cast also includes Isabelle Huppert (Amour, The Piano Teacher), Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs, The Woman in Black), Michael Nyqvist (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Antje Traue (Man of Steel).
Based on Dario Argento’s 1977 film of the same name, Suspiria is written by Green and Chris Gebert and centers on Suzie (Fuhrman), a bright and ambitious American student who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a fellow student is brutally murdered and several other cruel and strange homicides disrupt the once quiet life on campus, Suzie realizes that the academy may be a front for a more menacing organization.
Crime Scene Pictures partners Adam Ripp and Rob Paris today announced that they will join forces with producers Francesco Melzi d’Eril (I Am Love, Hotel Rwanda) from Memo Films and Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) under his First Sun film banner to produce and finance Suspiria, based on Dario Argento’s 1977 film of the same name.
David Gordon Green (All the Real Girls, Pineapple Express) will direct from a script he penned with Chris Gebert. Rizal Risjad, Silvia Fendi and Philip Elway will executive produce and Lisa Muskat will co-produce. Wild Bunch plans to sell international territories at Cannes in May while CAA represents the U.S. distribution rights.
For his last three movies, Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green has remained firmly in the world of comedy, and his most recent movie, The Sitter with Jonah Hill, continues that path. Green has said for a long time that he wants to do something more in the horror realm, but the furthest he’s gone into that genre is his ’70s-influenced Southern thriller Undertow.
