EXCL: Craven Lining Up Horror Quartet

In the coming year, Midnight Entertainment - Wes Craven's production company - is going to be busy. This month will see the release of The Last House on the Left, the second remake from the early days of his career that he produced. The success of this film will determine the fate of four other projects brewing at Midnight.

"We're going to be exploring new avenues," Craven told me over the weekend. "The Hills Have Eyes 3, we have a concept for which is really fun. A possible sequel to The Last House on the Left, then The People Under the Stairs and Shocker. That's it for the films we somewhat own. The first two I own with one other guy. People and Shocker Universal owns. But if I say, 'No, don't make it' they can't make it."

Out of this quartet, the third chapter in the Hills franchise - kicked off by Alex Aja in 2006 - is the closest to coming to fruition. Craven says he's currently talking to another European filmmaker who he believes has the chops to carry the ongoing saga about a mutant, inbred family and the poor souls that cross their path. Hills 3 would mark this unknown director's American debut. But will Fox Atomic be co-producing?

"Fox Atomic has a first look deal and they have passed on it," Craven reveals. "The reason is because of the deal. They have the right of first refusal but if someone else wants to do it, Fox has the right to come in and match that deal. For them, it's smarter to have us go find someone that will say yes, then come in see if they can top it."

As for Shocker, Craven confesses the original was not created on the technical level he reached for. Special effects hiccups prevented him from fulfilling his vision. A redo, "could be extraordinary if you have the special effects and really open it up. The possibilities are endless."

I would love another Hills movie, and this time those freaks should go after the people from the Hills. Just imagine the brutal way they could take out Spencer.

Looks like Wes is lining up more crappy films... Hills sequels are terrible and Shocker was just an attempt to clone Freddy and make some cash. Remember good films like A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Serpent and the Rainbow?

I really think a Shocker remake, if Wes is writing the script or adviser, it could be awesome. I always liked the premise of Shocker. Pinker was a very brutal killer who wasn't afraid of slaughtering entire families, and Wes wasn't afraid of showing the outcome(remember Jonathan's little brother was lying dead on the floor in a pool of blood and his fingers were snapped off). If they could keep the brutality of Pinker and do the supernatural aspects of his powers RIGHT(with the RIGHT FX, since the FX in the original was bad in comparison to other movies being made during that time), it could be an awesome ride.

I mean, I don't trust PD with the NOES remake. I recall Fuller saying that they're going for a realistic approach rather than a supernatural one, and that while there still will be dreams, everything behind it will be more based in reality. That being said, if the Shocker remake hits the right spots, who knows. It could live up to what Wes originally wanted it to be, a series of it's own!!

I'd love to see Mr. Pinker back...with better fx, I used to think that Shocker had franchise written all over it, but it was not to be.Let's hope this gets going so Pinker will give Kruger, Voorhees and Myers a run for their money!

Wes Craven sucks at sequels (SCREAMs notwithstanding). have we forgotten about THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2 (i know he only produced but STILL....). why does he have to jump on the success of THIS remake by making a sequel. THIS movie was AMAZING because of the performances of the actors AND most importantly the DIRECTOR. NOT because Craven. i know i'll get bashed for saying this but Craven is overrated. he's made a couple of AWESOME films but MORE abysmal ones.
