J.J. Abrams on the Future of Cloverfield

Source:Edward Douglas
February 28, 2009

At the Star Trek panel at WonderCon (more on that later over on ComingSoon.net), director J.J. Abrams was asked about the progress on making sequel to their monster hit (ha ha) Cloverfield, which opened last year to set a couple box office records.

"We're actually working on an idea right now," Abrams told the packed crowd. "The key obviously at doing any kind of sequel, certainly this film included, is that it better not be a business decision. If you're going to do something, it should be because you're really inspired to do it. It doesn't really have to mean anything, doesn't mean it will work, but it means we did it because we cared, not because we thought we could get the bucks. We have an idea that we thought was pretty cool that we're playing with, which means there will be something that's connected to Cloverfield, but I hope it happens sooner than later because the idea is pretty sweet."

Look for more coverage of WonderCon, both here and over on ComingSoon.net in the next 24 hours.

Pretty cool looking forward to what they have up there sleeves for the next one. I was kinda hoping they wouldn't make another because the first was good but yeah why not.

this would be awesome. hopefully they dont do it shakey cam style again. even though it was kinda neat always found myself sayin come on turn this way so we can see. blair witch 2 was normally shot unlike the first, but this movie will be better than that one.

they should do a movie on the affter math of what the city is like now and have the government try to take back the city whitch is now over run buy clover.

Its going to be so funny if it failed. It be like at the end of the movie but at the same time not only the Cloverfield monster was awaken but also GODZILLA. And Godzilla was destroying another part of the city as the cloverfield monster except they never saw one another even though their taller than all the buildings in N.Y.

YES!! I can't wait for the next one. I want to know what happend! And looking at the 1-18-08 site with all the pictures, theres one with the next morning on the shore line with dead wales washed up on shore with huge bite marks, looks awsome! Anyway I can't wait.

Actually Justin G, Godzilla was originally 50 meters tall, then 80, then 100, then back to 80, so he's not bigger than all the buildings in New York, he's actually a 1/4 of the height of the empire estate building.

Cloverfield was such a fun movie to watch in the theater (not quite the same on dvd)probably one of the funnest movie going experiences ive ever had

i think they should just leave it alone though. dont do a sequel

@ HIGGI666

they have to keep the shaky cam so that it seems real, like your there. thats why it was so cool and alot more intense and so unlike a typical "Godzilla" or "giant monster attacking a city" flick

The shakey cam style is what made the movie what it is. It made it stick out from not only monster movies but big budget movies in general. My one apprehension is that they will obviously have to do something different from the first yet i feel they shouldnt get away from the shakey cam. But what else can they do? Just doiing basically a remake of the first is a bad idea but to go away from that style is also a bad idea. What i'm saying is that, if they do the shakey cam look again, what can they do differently from the first?

I'd rather watch beautician and the beast on a continuous loop than this crap.

Honestly, I was not crazy about the first. I mean, I thought the CGI was good, and the idea was pretty genuine.

If they make a sequel to this movie, they would definitely have to explain the origin of this creature. Also, why and how the creature ended up in Manhatten.....did it just appear out of no where? Or was it evading something else? Something more terrifying......

Cloverfield vs. Godzilla anyone? LOL!!

Also, explain the damn parasite thingy's that make the people explode after being bit. I'd want to see this movie filmed in regular format instead of the whole "Personal Hand held" perspective.

The sequel could start with the military finding the camera from part 1 next to the dead bodies.....

i LOVE Cloverfield, but NO MORE SHAKY CAM!! it worked for the 1st movie but it was tedious. i say make the movie (maybe around the 1st movie's events, with a different group, maybe the military or something) in the traditional manner.

Cloverfield worked so well because of all the unanswered questions.

Please don't feel compelled to answer questions, JJ.

they need to show where the damb thing came from.

Posted by: ico on March 2, 2009 at 21:44:02

What they should do is have it be a documemtary crew or something. The thing is that the hand-held look is what made the first one different than other monster movies and to get away from that would be the most idiotic thing to do since Blair Witch 2.

Posted by: wadewilson on March 2, 2009 at 22:45:54

honestly, this is what they should do. remember when they were crossing the bridge and the monster destroyed it? well at that point wasnt the monster already in the city??? could there be another monster? yes the first one got nuked and who really knows who survived the end blast? the sequel if done right would be awesome.

Posted by: chris on March 3, 2009 at 18:03:53

i loved the first one but please if they do a sequel steady the camera thats really my only real request.

Posted by: maryjane's#1fan on March 10, 2009 at 19:26:54

i have to laugh at everyone... why do you need to know where the monster came from... who cares about that. it has nothing to do with the film. not sure what i think about making a 2nd one... loved the 1st one but usually sequels ruin the movie

Posted by: ico on March 11, 2009 at 02:01:42

maryjane's#1fan

I agree, they should never reveal where it came from, keep some mystery for gods sake. They should also keep the shaky cam look, thats what made the movie stick out from everything else and made it real. Why would you guys want a steady cam, so that they can have a nice clean, well lit, reveal for the monster? No, thats a stupid idea. Thats when the Nightmare on Elm Street movies went down hill, when Freddy started walking around blantantly in the light for all of us to see when he should have been in the shadows.
