Star Wars Turns to Horror!

January 27, 2009

George Lucas' powerhouse property is switching gears to another kind of "dark side." Shock is stepping well outside of its normal coverage with this one, because we've never covered novels and Star Wars is, well, cool and all, but not within our genre. But when someone does merge horror with the SW universe, I think it's good reason to break our usual coverage habits.

Apparently it's been rumored for some time that author Joe Schreiber was penning a Star Wars "expanded universe" horror novel entitled "Deathtroopers." Then, the below artwork (embracing a very Hellraiser-esque approach) popped up this week at StarWars.com and Schreiber further confirmed his participation via his blog:

"I'm going to be writing a Star Wars horror novel for Lucasfilm, to be released in November of 2009. And although I've been specifically asked not to talk about the content of the book, I can tell you that A) It's going to be very scary and B) It's hopefully going to be released on the same day that my original horror novel The Black Wing comes out. I'm thrilled (to death, obviously) to have this opportunity, and almost as thrilled to tell you about it."

The Pennsylvania-based Schreiber also penned the novels "Chase the Dead" and "Eat the Dark."

i have never read any of the expanded universe books but will definately be checking this out

Posted by: Ty on January 27, 2009 at 09:02:07

hmmmm. They could def. make the Vuzon'vong scary if they wanted too (Force immune race from the New Jedi Order series). Ultimately though I just cant imagine a jedi/sith being afraid of anything. Oh look it's got claws as long as my arm, and teeth stickin out of its face in all directions, and it eats people... Oh wait I've got the 5ft long blade made out of a laser beam.

Well, I'd have said it's a prank too, but the cover is featured prominently on starwars.com, so maybe it is for real....

@ Ty

I can't really believe it either.. i mean come on... "long arms, claws, teeth coming out of every where, and its eating people.. oh its a rancor.. any one got a rock?"

this is so ridiculous though that Lucas has to be serious.. i mean the guy has a really messed up sense of humor that goes WAY beyond that of Jar Jar Binks. I sense its real, i just can sense how good it's be considering i can't find much by way of this guys other novels but if the name of the book is any consolation it should suck "Deathtroopers"? couldn't come up with ANY THING better?

this is bull****. The first time you cover a novel...it's for this pice of garbage?! Screw you Joe!

Posted by: paulx3 on January 27, 2009 at 11:55:21

will this be for adults if it is there maybe some sex, volents, swaring and what ever they could come up with but it odd cos star wars is a family fime not a x rated movie apart from when Princess Leia Organa in the golden Bikini
but i would like to read it when it out cos iam a huge star wars fan

Zombie troopers?....

Never read any SW books, but this one looks interesting. Heck, there is definitely wiggle room for horror in the SW universe. I have to give Lucas a semi-thumbs up for even allowing this to happen.

soooo um i dont know about this

Posted by: brandon_fear on January 27, 2009 at 12:52:53

Well, first I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but I enjoy the movies.

Second, that is CORNIEST pic I have ever seen.

It's like something from back in the day when I use to read Goosebumps!(which was awesome) and that book started my horror frenzy.

Third, no doubt this will be another likely movie in the future to carry on the SW franchise.

I'm also a STAR WARS nerd, as well. I've come to learn that any route this franchise takes that's so "What the hell?!" is probably for real. Cases in point: THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, Jar Jar, THE CLONE WARS movie.

Why are there hooks on chains in the Star Wars universe?

Posted by: COMIC-CONIAN on January 27, 2009 at 16:04:44

sound awesomeeee cant wait for a motion picture kinda deadspace or alien!!!

Posted by: Dax on January 27, 2009 at 16:08:42

I'd imagine there are hooks on chains for bantha meat, ico. Or something.

There was a SW childrens book series a few years ago called Galaxy of Fear or something like that, so this isn't completely new territory for Star Wars, but still...that cover is really out of place for Star Wars...I mean, the whole concept is weird.

That's one thing I don't get. Why do all Horror writers and film makers come from PA, especially from my hometown of Pittsburgh. This looks interesting...ya...weird...but interesting.

Posted by: ico on January 27, 2009 at 18:47:24

Dax

Yeah maybe but it's Star Wars, they don't have some kind of anti-gravity machine to do that?

Posted by: SW fan on January 27, 2009 at 19:25:58

This sounds interesting than The Clone Wars animation. And why complain about Lucas? It will be just EU, not canon.

Posted by: DJ on January 27, 2009 at 19:26:26

Could be cool. Will probably pick up because I love Star Wars and horror, so could be best of both worlds!

Posted by: SmokinBandit on January 27, 2009 at 20:15:34

Damn, that just looks and sounds awsome!

Posted by: Show Stopper on January 27, 2009 at 23:05:35

The people of the Star Wars universe are some of the baddest around. What the heck is there to be afraid of when you go up against a giant Rancor without a weapon and kill it.

"Oh wow it's a horde of fast running zombies, master."

"I believe the proper term is "living" dead, Anakin."

"First one to 100 wins. Loser has to hang out with Jar Jar."

Acitvating saber, "I accept my friend."
