Martyrs' Laugier Signs to Details

November 24, 2008

Martyrs' Pascal Laugier is hitting Hollywood hard this season. The French helmer is attached to Dimension Films' upcoming Hellraiser remake and he has now signed with Paramount Vantage to write and direct Details.

Blumhouse Productions (Jason Blum, Steven Schneider) and Ian Levy are producing this adaptation of China Mieville's short story about a young girl "who disappears after awakening supernatural forces that inhabit the random patterns of everyday objects."

Laugier is taking over on writing duties after Dan Kay penned an initial adaptation.

Paramount Vantage recently made headlines when it committed to remaking Lake Mungo with Vertigo Entertainment. Word through the grapevine is that this specialty division of Paramount is being groomed to become a genre house.

Great! I can't wait to see the great first half followed by the crushingly awful, insulting-to-my-intelligence second half!

Garth, is MARTYRS really like that? i've been SO dying to see it and i DID hear (spoiler free of course) that the first have is VERY different than the 2nd half (or something happens...like a huge twist or something). i've even heard slight comparisons (in the twist or change in the movie) to "HIGH TENSION". i still have hope i'll like/love this movie (MARTYRS).

Well, around the halfway point it takes a HUGE turn and, for me it was awful, but there doesn't seem to be much of a concensus. I've heard people absolutely rave about it, I've heard people who agree with me (and some who don't even like it before it takes its turn) and I know people who are completely indifferent to it. I've heard the HT comparisons and they don't really work for me because with HT, up until there's 10 minutes or so left, I loved it, and the ending didn't ruin the movie for me, it was just an eyerollingly stupid twist. With Martyrs though, it's very much a part of the story, an integral part, not just a half-baked afterthought like HT. That said, even if I bought the turn, there are a couple major, MAJOR missteps around the halfway point that I just couldn't buy into.

It's something that you'll probably love or hate, and it's definitely worth seeing, just to see which side you fall on, but for me it was a great first half with just a terrible second half.
