If the fog rolls in over the town of
Silent Hill again, it will be without screenwriter Roger Avary. The scribe credited for
Pulp Fiction,
Killing Zoe and the Brett Easton Ellis adaptation
The Rules of Attraction brought the video game world of the "Silent Hill" series to atmospheric life in last year's film directed by Christophe Gans.
But in talking with Shock on the Paramount lot about his upcoming collaboration with Neil Gaiman and Robert Zemeckis,
Beowulf, he reveals, "I'm not gonna do
Silent Hill 2," a pause, maybe to renege on that comment, then an assured, "If Christophe's not gonna do it, I'm not..."
Then that settles that. When we had spoken to producer Don Carmody (
here), he hinted that Gans was similarly too busy with other work and didn't appear interested in following up his "Hill" film. This doesn't mean the sequel was dead, however, a new installment will progress without the director and writer.
Meanwhile, Avary's take on the spooky Dan Brereton comic book
"The Nocturnals" is still trying to find some life. "I'm seeing Dan [Brereton] next week - he's going to be at Comic-Con," Avary says. "I'd love to see that made. I actually gave the comics to [
Beowulf producer] Jeff Rapke and was like, 'Check this out, this is the shit!'" Needless to say, "Nocturnals" fans will have to patiently wait a bit longer before they see Doc Horror, Halloween Girl and, more importantly, Gunwitch, on the big screen.

I can't believe they don't want to do the honors and make a sequel.. That's heartbreaking, if anything, and this my own opinion, if they can make 3 resident Evil movies, which like i said my opinion, those movies blows, the movies i mean not the game. They can certainly make a few more silent hill movies. I know that Silent Hill fans, such as i are very disappointed to hear this. Hopefully, they find some director and screen writer that will stick to the game and not fabricate it into something its not, and stick to characters and stories like the game. Just like books no one likes to read or play something and then have a movie come out and it's nothing like the game or book. So hopefully, speakin as a fan of Silent Hill they do come up with a sequel.. Thanks.

I agree. I felt that the SH movie really struck the right cord. Granted, it didn't follow the story to the "T" but, it delivered something that the other game-to-movies didn't: music. Akira Yamaoka's scores from the first three games appear at all the right times, sending me (as a viewer) into the depths of what I enjoyed playing. The creatures, locations, and music were all iconic--and the story wasn't far off from SH1, either. It is a shame that SH2 won't be made by Gans and Avary. And even if we had to, I would wait till Gans had time off to focus more on SH2 so Avary could come back and write. His adaptation is far more superior than other game-to-movie translations. If Avary would go on to writing SH2, I'm more than certain he wouldn't try to make it a direct sequel UNLESS he found a way to have the character Chris do the James thing and venture off into Silent Hill on his own looking for his (dead) wife. Otherwise, I loved playing through the different games as different people who all had troubled lives that lead them to Silent Hill.

I thought Avary was going to jail for killing someone while driving drunk.

That is sad that hey are not going to continue with silent hill 2.
They did such a good job with the first one that we automattacally expect the second one to come out. Thats too bad.

interesting to say the least, considering how old this news is. I wonder what's up with Silent Hill 2 these days.

What an enormous mistake. Someone start a petition. Silent Hill is now the benchmark from where all game adaptations will be measured against. Anyone see inland empire? David lynch can easily tackle the source material. Especially since so much of silent hill borrows from his films.
