EXCL: Kiefer Sutherland on Lost Boys Prequel

In the years following the release of
The Lost Boys, director Joel Schumacher - in addition to nurturing an idea for a
Lost Girls film - mulled over a possible prequel.
"There were great [follow-up] ideas," says former lost boy Kiefer Sutherland and star of Fox's upcoming
Mirrors.
"Joel had one that was a prequel dating back all the way to the earthquake in San Francisco. The one we talk about in the original." And the quake responsible for providing Sutherland's vamp counterpart, David, with a cozy sea-side cavernous crypt.
"The whole thing I found interesting was that once you were a vampire you go back to that youthful state," he continues.
"The prequel was always going to follow David when he was mortal before he got sucked into the earthquake and got turned. That was Joel's idea and I thought that was really cool. But apparently Joel was really busy, Warner Bros. was really busy and it didn't happen."
Asked if he was at all approached to cameo in Warner Premiere's DVD release
Lost Boys: The Tribe, the actor answers,
"No, absolutely not. Lost Boys was a massive part of my life, it still is. You can't crap on that. And I'm not going to go out and do a cameo in a DVD release sequel. Why they never talked to Joel Schumacher in the past 15 years about doing a proper sequel... If you're not going to embrace what you're coming from in its original state...look, it was hard enough for me to do Young Guns 2 which I ended up thinking - because we were all better - was a better film."
Even though David is nowhere to be found in the cinematic sequel, we tell Sutherland his character does crop up in the comic book series
Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs, mullet and all.
"Really?" he asks with a grin. Yep, the antlers just missed your heart in the first film, apparently.
"That's cool!"

Awww dammit! Still looking forward to seeing the Tribe but that prequel sounded like it would have been MUCH cooler.

Lost boys the tribe was absolute crap. I'm glad he stayed out of that. And I hereby give Corey Feldman a virtual ***** slap for showing up in that piece of s@*t direct to dvd feature.

"The whole thing I found interesting was that once you were a vampire you go back to that youthful state,"
then how was the master vampire in lost boys an old guy?
guess it only works that way when you want your stars back but they've aged.
yeah... yeah.. the new one was terrible, but is anyone at all suprised?
and why was cory feldman doing a clint eastwood impression through the whole thing, cheese all the way....

Do you reckon a prequel like this will ever happen? That idea sounds great!
Just think, another REAL Lost Boys installment that could do fans of the original proud.

I don't think anyone could have said it better. Sutherland knows what the **** hes doing, and honestly, lost boys 2 could have and should been better. the only thing that saved the disk from becoming a new beer coaster in my apartment was feldman. Also, the alternate ending should have been the entire movie. That minute and a half was better than the whole film. Why did the idiots that made this movie not talk to ANYONE involved in the first film. The director needs to go work for uwe boll or whatever his name is. Who gave this retard the money for this movie?!?!?

I like the fact that Kiefer doesn't shy away from his horror roots, unlike some others, and actually offers some insight on what could have been.

It would have been great if they had made the sequels and prerquels way back in the day

I don't see why they didn't do a prequel in the 21 years since the last one. Kiefer and Alex Winter weren't that busy. Kiefer even said himself in Entertainment Weekly at one point that he bottomed out in the mid-90s with a bunch of crap movies and that he would have essentially lost it all at one point. 24 and other things kept him relevant. Hell, Joel came back to him with the Phone Booth gig. What would have stopped from doing something related to Lost Boys then or soon after?

Justin is right on the mark. Why would they give the reins to someone like this. The fact of the matter is, the movie is ****, the deleted ending is better than the whole film. This has to stop. WE are the ones who watch the movies, its time someone answered to the fans. This should not have happened like this. I'm very upset. Were is the money coming from since they couldn't have done it until now? ****, scifi channel could have done a better job, and thats saying alot.
Right on Justin! You are speaking the truth.

Call me crazy, but I actually enjoyed "Lost Boys: The Tribe." Sure it has a lot of flaws, but I had fun watching it. If anything, it was cool to see Tom Savini pop up during the opening of the film. Sadly, he did not have a groin-mounted pistol.
Posted by: chris on August 15, 2008 at 03:07:51
Tribe was a joke. Savini's part was a joke. The vampires were a joke. The music videos in the features section were a joke. The cold fact that I bought the movie is a punchline to a bigger joke. The only thing that might have been cool was the remix of Cry Little Sister.
It would be neat if the fans could throw their two cents in on a screenplay before they crank a piece of s*** like that out of the movie making grinder.

No doubt a big paycheck was what made Corey Feldman sign on to this film to reprise his role. Also, where's Corey Haim and Jamison Newlander in this sequel? Are they even in the film at all? If not, then the director and screenwriter have made some type of a mistake.

dont be surprised corey feldman has never been a great actor. his claim to fame is the voice of donatello in tmnt movies and lets leave it at that

I met Billy Wirth, Brooke McCarter, and Jamison Newlander and it was awesome in Santa Cruz. Wish Kiefer had of been there. If anyone wants to see just go to youtube.com and look up THE LOST BOYS CAVE PARTY. the 2nd movie was nothing but crap and i agree , the prequel or a sequel done right would have been awesome. Somebody was just trying to cash in on the name as usual.

I think that a prequel would have been better than a sequel any day. I'd LOVE to see how David, Dwayne, Paul, and Marko became vampires! But Tribe MIGHT have been good as a stand-alone-but when you've got a whole lot of fans, then give them something that can be mentioned in the same sentence as The Lost Boys! The only way I can is by saying, 'The Tribe was a piece of poor-FX and swearing, and is incomparable to the Lost Boys.'

I think the tribe was just such a dissapointment of a cult classic. I in my opinion know if it had been done right, meaning had a great story unlike the crap one that was given to the audience, the franchise couldve been revived. If a worth wild story had been written im sure the big namers from the original wouldve made cameo appearances. It just kills me to see a great opportunity for an excellent sequel go to waste, who ever responsible for the tribes failure have some pride in your work next time and watch the original which you certaintly didnt take any notes from and stick to what works the first time if you want to make a crappy movie name it something else and keep the cory`s out of it if you cant do them justice they disserve
