Englund: Krueger is Out for Thornton

Source:JoBlo
August 11, 2008

Robert Englund kicked up a rumor last night on the radio show Loveline.

Promoting the upcoming release of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, the actor admitted he's heard rumblings Billy Bob Thornton is circling the Freddy Krueger role in the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. As we've reported in the past, it's unlikely Englund will return wearing the sweater and glove.

But before everyone gets all fired up, a few things to consider: Wesley Strick has just come on board to write the script, so casting is a ways off. Platinum Dunes producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller clearly stated at Comic-Con that their involvement with the project is still not locked. Furthermore, this is strictly - again - rumor from an actor not even creatively involved in the remake. (At best, Englund may get a cameo.)

Englund's time is past. he hasn't been scary for um, forever. not since the 1st part. the 1st part was pretty good and dark and scary. EVERY other part was cheesy (bad) one liners and weren't at all vicious and scary. i respect people who love this franchise and Englund, but if they HAVE to do a remake/reboot start over from scratch like they are doing w/ Friday the 13th.
i don't envy the guy the cast as the new Freddy though. there's NO WAY he'll be accepted by the majority of Elm St. fans. so why bother.

get over it already. englund has to be in his 60's and isnt excactly a "good"actor. sure he did great with freddy but jesus put makeup on me and i can spew of the cheesy one liners too. They are gonna start from scratch which is the best idea, freddy kruger is a great chracter and with the right ppl involved it could be one for the ages. def have englund back for something though out of respect, maybe a victim or something.

I have to agree with...."djblack1313"

Freddy Kruger stoppe dbeing scary after the first movie, and Robert Englund has only himself to blame. He allowed his character to be campy, riddled with stupid one liners and just turn into a cartoon character as opposed to someone who was meant to terrify people in the audience. I stopped going to see his movies after the 3rd (or maybe the 4th one)because they were just utterly stupid movies.

A true horror fan would never want to see Englund back in the "Krueger Gloves" after the debacle he turned his character into. I can't believe you die hard "NIGHTMARE" fans even think anything past the 1st movie was worth watching? When I wnat to see a horror movie, that's what I want to see! I don't even think anything past the first "N.O.E.S." shoudl even be considered to be part of the horror genre.

I am all for a new Freddy, one who is Scary, sinister, and downright evil! Keep the clows at the circus!!

All these remakes are pissing me off. It's just an excuse to cash in. I don't care who they get, it's dumb and pointless. There's really no reason to screw around with the Nightmare movies. If it's not broken don't try to fix it!

Posted by: theMASman on August 11, 2008 at 18:28:43

I can see it happening. I'm a fan of the first the most and how he looked in "New Nightmare". The rest were quite comical.

I have my opinions along with art as to how I fierce I hope he is in the remake.

Some will like it some wont but had to share. :)

hell no! robert england forever

Posted by: tremerefury on August 11, 2008 at 18:39:01

Nothing past the first one was scary? Everything after the first one was camp? Are you guys stupid? Go watch New Nightmare! He was scarier in that than the first one! Plus Freddy Vs. Jason WASN'T camp (though I consider that to be more of an action movie than horror.)

Posted by: djblack1313 on August 11, 2008 at 19:09:33

you're right FvJ wasn't camp, it was just plain stupid. sorry.
i will agree to a point that "A New Nightmare" had some decent moments, but then they go and decimate all creepiness/intensity that accrued w/ "New Nightmare" by doing the god awful (and cheesy!) FvJ.

Posted by: Darth Manveru on August 11, 2008 at 19:28:39

Screw Freddy, Jason kicks ass! Freddy can S u c k on my sweaty large n u t s.

Posted by: Curlydewd on August 11, 2008 at 20:53:47

Okay, I will agree "A New Nightmare" had it's moments and that was the creepeist and darkest Freddy looked since the first one, but come on anything in between that one and the first one....COMEDY at it's finest!

Posted by: Garth on August 11, 2008 at 21:09:49

Yeah, and we all know how reliable Motormouth Englund is, don't we?

Posted by: Big Red on August 11, 2008 at 22:38:25

Let's see Billy Bob is 53, and Rob Englund is 61, so I really don't see where that 7-8 year age difference makes a big deal when it comes to who would portray the character better.

To me, Robert Englund IS that character, and unless he were dead, there really is no reason to replace him with someone else. Whether it works or not depends on the story and writing, as well as the other behind the scenes elemements (a good director always helps). Englund would do just fine.

holy shnikies, you kids dont even know what freddy is all about.

there never was any bad horror movies every movie has something to love about it the nightmare movies from the 90s were fun and campy i just watched april fools day and it made me want the old 80 horror movies like sleepaway camp 2 and 3. but as far as thortan playing kruger i dont think so that would just be stupid im can billy bob actually sound like kruger at all

Posted by: Robgoblin on August 11, 2008 at 23:27:13

This sucks major balls but now England knows how Kane Hodder feels to be replaced.

Let me guess BBT has more expressive eyes.

Yeah, riggghhhtttt!

Posted by: djblack1313 on August 11, 2008 at 23:39:52

i also think that the actor they cast isn't supposed to sound like Kruger (whatever that means). as long as the voice/sound of Kruger is scary sounding i'm in. again (IMO) Kruger hasn't been scary or threatening in like forever.
i'm thinking that this movie will split the fans more than the FRIDAY remake and the Tx Ch Mass remake.

Posted by: John on August 11, 2008 at 23:44:31

They should cast Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, 30 Days Of Night) as Freddy. He'd be far more effectively creepy than Billy Bob.

Posted by: brandon_fear on August 11, 2008 at 23:45:03

well...you guys see what Nolan did with the Batman franchise.

With the right people, a remake of one of horror's finest could be amazing. But it's gotta be pure freakin' horror. Not comedy...

I'll be honest and say Englund was great for his time in the 80s...and every time I've seen him in a new Freddy film...the word "campy" pops up in my mind.

I'm all for a new actor to play Kruger as long as he can give me nightmares for a year. I'm not sure if that actor is Thornton, but I'm not gonna diss on him if I've not seen him in that role.

The same people who said Ledger would make a crappy Joker in the Dark Knight...pissed their pants when they seen a pic of him in the role.

Posted by: Italian on August 11, 2008 at 23:50:57

There are persons who don't even know how to spell the name of the actor: it's ENGLUND, not ENGLAND... And those are supposed to be fans? In any case I agree with most of the posters here: Krueger was scary only in the first and the seventh movie, but I still like also the third one.

Posted by: Garth on August 12, 2008 at 00:19:07

"there really is no reason to replace him with someone else"

Yes, there is, a very simple reason: It's a REMAKE. How many remakes have the same star as the original? That would sorta defeat the purpose of doing a remake. And yes, you can retort with "There shouldn't be a remake" but the fact is that a remake is in the works and it's riDICulous to think that there's even any REMOTE possibility that Robert Englund is going to play Freddy.

And now, we know that the movie is only in the scripting stage, so if it DOES indeed happen, it won't come out until likely at LEAST 2010, so you've got several years to grow up and get over it.

Posted by: Garth on August 12, 2008 at 00:45:00

Oh, and lest we forget that this is the man who has, about a dozen times, told us that the new nightmare prequel is a done deal, or FvJ2 or FvJvAsh/Leatherface/Pinhead/Michael Myers/Ghostface/Samara/Robocop/Mary Poppins.

So it holds about as much water as a collander.

That said, make peace with the fact that the new Freddy will have a burned face, a glove with blades on it and likely nothing else in common with the Freddy we no. Probably no hat or red and green shirt. That's just the reality. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you calm down and realize that a remade movie is not something to get your panties in a bunch about.

Posted by: Curlydewd on August 12, 2008 at 00:52:30

Anyone who thinks Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger (aside the first and seventh movie) was scary has obviously not seen a REAL horror movie. LOL!

I don't knwo what's more ridiculous...Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger in the remake or people who actually want to see him ruin this new movie liek he ruined the others!

Posted by: djblack1313 on August 12, 2008 at 00:56:33

Garth, VERY well said! and i love your comment "FvJvAsh/Leatherface/Pinhead/Michael Myers/Ghostface/Samara/Robocop/Mary Poppins." LOL.
