SDCC EXCL: Tatopoulos on Underworld 4

Source:Ryan Rotten
August 4, 2008

At the end of Underworld: Evolution, Michael (now a hybrid) and the Death Dealer known as Selene faced an uncertain future. This made fans especially voracious for a third chapter, however, they were hit with a modicum of surprise when Lakeshore and Screen Gems announced the anticipated threequel - Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - was indeed a prequel.

Patrick Tatopoulos, director of the Lycan-heavy upcoming chapter, tells us co-creator Len Wiseman "has a concept of what the next film will be" and it may mean a forward progression of Michael and Selene's story. Although, "At this stage, where we're at now, I would personally love to go back to the future. You can explore a lot of things, however, with our film, we've opened the door to other interesting projects. It could be [another] period film."

One thing Tatopoulos is sure of is that the Underworld franchise is no longer largely dominated by the vampires anymore. His installment focuses heavily on the Lycans. "Our film is less sophisticated - not in a bad way. It's more refined. This is a guy film with blood and sweat."

Out full chat with Tatopoulos is coming soon. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans opens in theaters on January 23, 2009.

Can't wait, but bring Kate back! I love both Underworld movies and I don't mind more!

These movies suck, please don't make anymore. They're uninteresting, the action scenes are boring, the acting is forgettable, they have no original style...just a complete waste. The cinematic equivalent of a chicken sandwich from Dairy Queen.

I say. I am tired of hearing about Len Wiseass. How about someone giving Kevin Grevious (creator) the credit he deserves. Hollywood is bullsh>>>t man...completely

Posted by: James on August 4, 2008 at 09:51:36

Kevin Grevioux

I agree James, wholeheartedly. But at least Ken Grevioux is reprising his character Raze in the third one! I would have been extremely pissed otherwise.

who cares , i will still see the movie.

Come on, Dax, let's see YOUR "awesome, interesting, exciting, believable, original" addition to humanity.

They're ****ing vampire movies who gives a **** they won't be The Godfather from the start enjoy them for what they are.

And James, you're hilarious with your "Len Wiseass" name, it's twice as funny as "Joel Shoemaker" and all the other hilarious names people must type to make themselves feel better about movies that make them angry for bizarre reasons.

Again, vampire movies. Get over it.

The first one was pretty bad but I dug the badass monsters in the sequel, like the huge werewolf and that ancient flying bat mother****er. I also appreciated the inclusion of some actual blood and guts. Always a neat thing to have in an R rated monster movie. So if the third film can keep the monsters and red stuff coming and maybe add a couple boobs being squeezed by hairy werewolf palms I'll eat it right up.

They better continue the franchise after this prequel. I'm interested in the prequel, but it would have made more sense to finish this franchise off first.

I agree with Gambit here. They should have went ahead with part 3, then did the prequel. Wait, did i just sorta praise George Lucas for doing that with Star Wars? Ha, woulda been hilarious if he did this same thing. "Okay George, where do we take things after Empire Strikes Back?" "We leave the fans hanging! We instead do a prequel with Anakin as an annoying little kid first! Then, if the audience takes the bait, we finish the original storyline!"

5 words; More Kate in Black Leather!!

Ampersand

Would you rather i called him a no talent hack who steals ideas and takes credit for stuff he could never accomplish. Hey THAT did feel alot better. I can go on living now. My reasons don't have to make sense to you. You should get over that.

Um... yet you wasted your time watching BOTH of them and felt the urge to waste more time reading and commenting on an article about the third? Who's holding that gun to you head Dax. Just blink once and I'll call the cops for you. Obviously way more people than you liked them or they wouldn't be making more.

I actually think that going back to tell the origin of the war makes sense, especially since the inevitable Underworld 4 would most likely go back to the future and end the war for good.

To master the future, you must first understand the past.

movie was awesome. check it out.

I want another prequel, which focuses on Amelia's reign and Lucian trying to gain power, but somehow gets reduced to living in sewers. Enough Selene. Enough Michael. They're done.

One of the bset movies seen. Here is why!
1. fight scenes
2. love story
3. characters
4. landscape
5. believeability
Now thats a movie, loved it!!!!
Friends loved it too

since the original bloodlines were severed at the end of evolution and beckinsales character did not fry in the sunlight wouldn't the original story be done? the prequel was a good choice, i had my reservations about it at first, but was pleasantly surprised. I would like to see how the corvinus brothers became to be the first immortals and the events that we did not see enough of in the beginning of evolution. Viktor slaying Salene's family and her father building williams tomb. Then everyone's happy you get more story, more kate beckinsale, and no speedman. I personally didn't see anything wrong with his performances though. I just don't see how they can continue into the future with the bloodlines ended. And think that the corvinus back story would be more interesting.

i loved it! it was the best of the three i have been waiting for lucians story, and hated when he was killed off in the first film but characters have to die sometimes to make the story good. i really hope they do marcus and williams story. maybe william is changeing and becomeing violent and victor wants him dead, there father the imortal agrees and before william changes completely he begs marcus to protect him and marcus swears it, it could be a great story maybe called underworld the beginning with the feel of the third one.what do you guy's think?

Posted by: chris on January 29, 2009 at 19:32:51

it would be cool to see kravens and selens first story,or a sequel to evolution.

Posted by: rebecca on January 30, 2009 at 19:48:53

omg yes you go kate i hope you do make another sequil

I really enjoyed the movie.
With 1 & 2 we have the rumor's of the past. But then in any war it is the Victor (no pun intended) who writes the history.
But with Underworld 3 we find out the genisis between William's strain of Werewolfery and the Marcus's one.
Really looking forward hen the DVd comes ut to see the specials re the making of it. Tatopolous has done wonders with the suits again, refusing to go fully CGI when it migth have been the easier path.
Victor was supurb - he came across as a prideful, arrogant son of a bat (Read that how you will :>) And we can see in Sonia the spark that Victor would have seen in the future Selene.
All in all - it worked very well in bring the story around to the start of Underworld 1.. And we do see Selene - if only for a moment at the end.
Looking forward to Underworld 4 - however With William gone - no more fluffy werewolves.
Take care all

Marc

I say, let the story from Evolution end. ROTL was so good (and more Lucian is never a bad thing) I would rather see that story continue -the battle between Kraven and Lucian, the turning of Selene, and how the lycans were basically forced into hiding. Speedman is out of his league...let him go!

Posted by: tay on February 14, 2009 at 08:38:23

I'm with you on this one . rise of the lycans was kick ass...the theater was so packed ppl were sitting on the floor opening nite. they over sold andppl bought tickets for something else but snuck into the underworld theater.
I wanna know about the war, selene's turning and @ the end they can jump to the present where selene and michael are now ruling or still fighting the two races.
