Mummy Trouble in China

Source:Variety
July 11, 2008

In spite of his best efforts, Rob Cohen still managed to piss China off. "How" is the unknown factor.

Censors in China are requesting cuts be made to Cohen's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor before its admitted into theaters. The State Administration for Radio, Film and Television won't offer further details, Universal's rep seem optimistic things will work out and Edko Films, Universal's distributor in Hong Kong and China, is taking a "it's too early to talk about it" stance.

The latest Mummy takes place and was lensed in China. As Variety is right to note, narratives featuring ghosts are now a big no-no in China (read here), however, The Mummy features a more fantastical element.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, starring Brenden Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, Michelle Yeo and Luke Ford, opens in the U.S. on August 1st.

WTF is the matter with the Chinese Gov't?

Have they realized that this is just for entertainment? Nothing to be taking too serious, it's just another popcorn flick...

You know what is the problem?
China is too damn worried about their image now. But they forget that they're still a country where no one is free to say things. The ones who dares, simply disappear... Not only this, but all their media is manipulated to make the gov look good in the eyes of the entire world. Their uglies no one ever knows. And the funniest fact is that they insist on denying that they censor everything according to their own advantage...

So ridiculous...

Xman and Return of the 619
China has a problem with portraying spirits in films. Different countries have different cultures (governments aside). This hassle with the film is due to the people and their beliefs. Strangely enough not everybody is exactly like you. I'm guessing that you're both Americans right?

Ahahahahahaha! Pwned!

Andrew: Actually, my home country is neighbors with China, and I've been working in China for the last past 5 years, that's why I can say what I said with conviction. That aside, the gov DOES filter and censor what info you hear, see or get. And no matter how many times or how much you say it, the gov will deny it and the people are so brain washed that will say the same thing, like zumbis! Sorry to say... China ain' no free country even they say otherwise.

@andrew...
No, i'm not a bloody American.... the American mainstream style makes sick... Why even thought my origings are from San Diego doesn't mean that I gotta support this corrupted "US"

I would agree with X-Man. While Andrew has a point that Americans (of which I myself am one) are infamous for our cultural insensitivity and (often) harmful foreign policy, the Chinese government is engaged in numerous human rights abuses. These include violent suppresion of religious freedom, censorship and control over free speech and publications, as well as corporal punishment (sometimes) for those who disobey.

This is not an issue of "cultural insensitivity." Native peoples within China are, at times, outlawed from expressing their own cultural and/or religious practices. This is an issue of an oppressive governmental regime.

So now, if you want to make a movie, you have to carefully consider the cultural, religious, and political feelings of every blasted country on the face of the Earth and make certain that there is nothing in the script content that might possibly offend anybody. Is this the correct way to look at it, or am I just being insensitive?
(actually, I don't care if I am insensitive.)

well then i guess china doesn't like the xbox game Jade Empire either. That game is full of ghosts and spirits of all kinds. Any way, Return of the 6.1.9, what makes me sick is how every country thinks that americans are all the same because of the dumb choices that our government makes and other people in american like film makers make. Thinking like that is generalizing and just plain ignorant.

Guys... My opinion is:
I go to the movies for fun! I don't expect to get any kind of knowledge from them! Just plain fun! But if there's info to be learned, hey, that's good too! The only problem is when any gov starts to forbid a movie because "it has ghosts" ...By the way, WTF do ghosts have got to do with the Olympic games?

And one more thing: Theaters in china usually shows a movie for like only a week... don't know why... And well, I don't ever go to the movies anymore here in china! They are not used to the big dark room! They'd rather buy those piracy DVD5s! If there are chinese mainlanders, they'll know i tell the truth!

To a certain extent I agree with what China's doing, though it is bull**** that China is so controlling of their people. I kind of think of it like gateway drugs. You do a gateway drug then you figure, "what the hell, let's try the next one up" and then the next and the next. or you steal a pack of candy and say "just this once, I'm hungry" and then you steal another and another until it doesn't faze you anymore and then you steal more expensive items and hey, why not break in and steal money out of a safe and so on and so forth.

Now, I never did the whole break in or robbery scene, but I did develop quite a habbit of stealing, I finally decided that I needed to stop and holy **** that was a pain in the ass.

My point is, watching movies with ghosts and goblins, or witches or sex scenes may not be necessarily bad, but then you get used to it and go further and further. Your children take after you and go farther than you did and theirs farther than they did until things get worse and worse.

If you think about it that's what is already happening with the US. There is a **** ton of stuff that people never would have done/gotten away with 10 years ago or 20, 30 or 40. We're progressively getting worse and worse as a people.

Now, personally I think China is being too drastic because I see no problem watching stuff like that, but in the long run I do believe it will leave a negative impact.

I feel very sorry for the Chinese people, they are being brainwashed by their own government to the point of no return. They cannot even think differently now. Damn communist bull****!
