Mirrors this week, French horror fiend Alexandre Aja and Grégory Levasseur have begun prep on Dimension Films'
Piranha, the remake we last spoke to Aja about
here. Since that discussion in October, it has been announced the film will be lensed in 3-D.
"That was the really exciting reason we jumped on that movie," Aja tells this writer in the company of Levasseur.
"We were on the set of P2 and we were like, 'How cool would it be to see that live-action movie in 3-D?' We are thinking at the same time, let's see a real R-rated movie in 3-D with the new technology! So, Piranha is going to be completely in 3-D."
Aja sees that as one more challenge, one he is eager to dive into nonetheless. As for the story, expect a complete re-working of the concept first loosed on the public in Joe Dante's '78 film. Some time back, it was leaked that the script concerned Spring Breakers becoming fish food for a school of prehistoric piranha set loose by an underwater earthquake.
"That was the plot of the script and that was really fun," Aja enthuses.
"Years later the script came back in a different incarnation, so we convinced Bob Weinstein to take the Spring Break plot and let us do what we wanted to do with it. There is not one character or one situation that is similar to the Joe Dante or James Cameron [Piranha] movies - it's completely, completely, completely different."
The director is thrilled that Dimension has already penciled in a release date for the flick - July 24, 2009.
"I think it's a good choice and the fact that they're putting it in that spot is also showing they really believe in a blockbuster movie. That's what the script is like. It's a blueprint of a roller coaster. It's about fun, jumps, gore and fish..."
Levasseur chimes in,
"And 3-D boobs." Aja laughs,
"Yes, 3-D boobs."
On a completely different note, the latter wants to clarify an IMDB rumor that cropped up on his page within the last month. Contrary to what was once listed (and has been recently pulled), he is
not in line to direct a remake of
Silent Night, Deadly Night.

The reason why I respect Alexandre Aja and have no problem with him remaking PIRANHA (not that it's an untouchable property, or anything) is because he made one of the best, freshest remakes I've ever seen in THE HILLS HAVE EYES.
That movie rocked the ****!

Can't say this is what I expected from the director of 'Haute Tension,' possibly the best slasher ever made... but they had me at '3D boobs.' (I mean, can you believe there was a 3D Friday the 13th and they DIDN'T put in any tit shots?! Yo-yos and harpoons and eyeballs flying in your face, but erect nipples were too much to ask for...?!)

They got me at 3-D boobs. I will now be seeing this movie on opening weekend!!!! Without my wife of course, because she'll kill me if she finds out I knew about the 3-D boobs...

I guess they could do worse than remake this, but the fact they have to "remake" it is just sad. the best bit about this movie will be the 3D boobs (and I bet they are fakeys!)
Remakes are killing the movie industry. I think its about time studios invested in *NEW* ideas and *NEW* movie makers, not just rehashes of old movies.
