Speedman on the Future of Underworld

Scott Speedman didn't take the news too hard when he learned he was not part of Screen Gems' prequel Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans.

Promoting the release of the serial killer thriller Anamorph (opening in New York this week with an L.A. bow to follow), the actor tells ShockTillYouDrop.com, "Len [Wiseman], the director [of the first two Underworld films], texted me from New Zealand saying that the next film had werewolves and, 'You're not here, it's very strange.' It's a prequel, so I couldn't be in it at all."

Don't be so sure, stranger things have happened. As a fourth chapter that would resume with Speedman's character Michael and his relationship with Selene (played by Kate Beckinsale): "I don't know if there's going to be a next one. [The prequel] might close the book on the Underworld series."

In Rise of the Lycans, Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy return in this origin tale that ignites the feud between vampires and the Lycans. FX artist Patrick Tatopoulos makes his directing debut. Screen Gems will release the sequel in theaters on January 23, 2009.

what a bunch of bs by the studios with going with a prequel in this franchise. Underworld 2 left the door open with Selene and michael and how they would be the future. By the studio going to a prequel before doing a sequel to the franchise is a complete waste of time and money. No one wants to see the rise of the lycans and without the 2 main characters by Selene and michael you might as well say goodbye to the franchise because this prequel will flop at the box office and u won't see a underworld 4.

There will be a fourth film.

This is funny, the series seems to be panning out like the Metal Gear Solid video games. An original, a sequel to the original, then a prequel, then a follow up to the second game. I wonder if that's what this series of films is doing.

ye got a point there

I think i speak for everyone when I say that I'd rather them finish off the original series first and not make us wait another 2 or 3 years before we finally get a finished story. If ever considering if this prequel doesn't do well enough they may not greenlight the sequel!

After the first film was a success and in doing promotional work for Underworld: Evolution, I remember Len Wisemen saying that when him and his writers first sat down to write the first movie, he said that they originally envisioned three films... the first, it's sequel and then if fortuneate enough, a third film that will be a prequel. It looks like they've stuck to that plan.

I loved the flashback at the opening of number 2 during the midevil time period. So much fun stuff in that. Vampires, werewolves, horseback, swords, bows and arrows etc. But I think they should have made number 2 a little longer to include more of that time period flasback because we don't need a third film dedicated to that when everything was explained about what this third film will be about in the first movie!

Still, this will be fun I think. It's got both Michael Sheen and the great Bill Nighy back so give credit to the producers for that. BUT, a direct sequel to Evolution should have been done first to wrap that whole story up. Hopefully it will be done. I'm sure the studio looked at worldwide box office receipts and DVD sales before going with this third one. It'll be the same thing again when this prequel hits DVD.

You know, I really dislike this 'paranormal romance' subgenre that's crept up and passed itself off as horror in recent years - TV shows like Blood Ties and Moonlight, and I would say the Underworld movies are part of that. But I must admit - I really quite enjoyed the Underworld movies. They take themselves a bit too seriously (outside of Bill Nighy's star turn, of course), but it's quite a nice mythology they've built up, so I'd be happy to see more. Particularly if it involves more Kate Beckinsale in latex (one thing that prequel will massively suffer from lacking).

I cannot wait for this release. Even though I am not a fan of doing a bunch of movies and then throwing in its prequel in the middle. but whatever.

I hope a 4th will be taken into consideration, as long as the cast returns. I think it is a great tragic story and horror movie mix up.

KEEP THEM COMIN'

I can only hope that Scot Speedman will still be there to play Michael Corvin. I love him and his acting and that I love original movie with the first original actors - not changing them because you don't feel the real pure power of the film itself without the main original acotr / actresses. Feels bad without them. And I do hope also that the Underworld 4 came soon!

is going to be stupid that the character of michael dosent apper in the movie everybody expects him and selene is not gonna be the same i dont even want to see the movie

i was disappointed on learning that the 3rd movie looks into the past rather than the future. i.e. no kate & scott :( i was looking to the future because i wanted to know what happen to the future of the lycans & vampires after the death of the elders. will the war rage on? and what of selene & michael's union? will their union create a more powerful and resilient breed? will they become leaders of the lycans & vampires? will there finally be peace? i hope the 4th installment will explore on this with the original cast members.

Lildragon, you obviously don't have a clue. It is a hit at the box office, and as long as they make a fourth to explore the "future" with michael and selene, I will be fine with it. You are right about there needing to be a fourth, but what difference does it make when? I will buy all of them and watch them 2 to 4 times a year I am sure.

I'm hoping there will be a 4th. All three Underworlds are awesome. I'm hoping that Michael and Selene's baby will get revenge for Selene and her family. That baby should be a Hybrid to the 5th power!
