In just a little over a month, powerhouse writing-directing team Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Game) begin shooting a sequel to their pumped-up, kinetic actioner Crank. Following that, it's

there's a script review up at LR, and it sounds pretty good... seems they've dropped this "supernatural" business, which is a VERY good thing. this movie should be a straight up violent action western and nothing else.

Err... if the comic is a supernatural western, then why is it a good thing to nix that for the theatrical adaptation? Then what is there to differentiate it from the millions of other violent westerns out there?

That's the thing though, the comic isn't a supernatural western, though it has had some supernatural type stories over the course of it's various runs throughout the years, usually when he ran across other DC western characters like El Diablo. But mainly Jonah Hex is just a straight up, hard edged, down and dirty western, albeit one with a truly great, no nonsense bounty hunter as the central character. There is much potential for movie coolness here, that is if they don't tone it all down and pg-13 it to hell.
Still, I'll believe it when I see it. They've been trying to get a Jonah Hex movie made since the late 70's. Kind of a shame that they never managed to do so back then too, as Clint Eastwood back in his High Plains Drifter/Outlaw Josey Wales days would have been perfect for Hex. If this does get the green light it'll be very interesting to see just who they get to play Jonah Hex...

Yeah, having Eastwood as the main character, in the 70s or 80s, MAYBE even the early 90s (well, maybe not)...too late now. What actor today has the grizzled and "masculine" appearance to pull of the character?...I guess it would have to be a relatively unknown actor.

methinks it should retain a supernatural element. certainly lots of shadowy subdued lighting and be as gritty and unrelenting as "deadwood". what about john hamm from "madmen" tv series...he's got the credentials provided we do only see half a handsome face. And bonny prince billy and maybe calexico to do an eerie minimal soundtrack.

I think Viggo Mortensen or Josh Holloway would be a good choice to play Hex.

They should have gotten Hugh Jackman to play Hex!! Boooooo!!

yes,i agree that all of the above suggestions would be capable~maybe jackman is too over exposed now tho'.The tone of the film should be dark and the lighting/cinematography reflect this ~some david Lynch type flashbacks to Hex's Civil war experiences ~canon fire, bloodied bodies etc and should only "hint" at an origin rather than "explain" it. Plus, Hex's face should only be seen sparingly too, maybe lighting up a cigar at night, that kind of thing ~ less is more...effective.

A friend of mine and I were talking about this just this weekend. I was thinking that Brad Pitt would actually do a great job at being Hex. In fact, I think if the script was good enough, he'd probably jump at it.

Russell Crowe is the perfect Jonah Hex, and I think it should retain it's supenatural element.
