EXCL: David Gordon Green Talks Suspiria Remake

Source:Edward Douglas
March 5, 2008

Last year, it was mentioned that a remake of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic Suspiria was in the works and that David Gordon Green was one of the filmmakers in talks to direct, but today, in an interview for his new film Snow Angels, Green confirmed to ShockTillYouDrop.com that the project is still very much alive after the Writers' Strike.

While Green is well known among indie film fans for his early dramas George Washington and All the Real Girls, Green's first foray into genre flicks was 2005's Undertow, which took its cues from '70s revenge thrillers, and this summer, Green makes his first studio movie with the Seth Rogen action comedy Pineapple Express.

One of the many projects he could do now that he's finished with the anticipated comedy includes that Argento remake, which he'd like to direct as well as write. "These Italian producers came to me about it, wanting to do a pretty amazing, ambitious, artistic (version)," he told us. "It could be pretty wild." Even though the original movie was already in English (and starred American actress Jessica Harper), this would feature an all-American cast but would be shot in Europe. It might not be the next thing on Green's plate to direct since he has a lot of ideas including a big-budget action movie, adapting John Grisham's non-fiction book "An Innocent Man" and a "medieval project."

It certainly wouldn't be Green's last venture into horror if the other idea he told us about comes to fruition. "I'd also like to start a straight-to-video action company that just does genre movies. Me and my friend Darius just finished the script called "One in the Chamber." It's just a guy going to get his kidnapped son out of prison. Give me a couple million bucks to go explore some schlock. I'd like to be the next Roger Corman. He would have his hand in freakin' 'Piranha' but also in Fellini. I like that idea. I would love to do some genre stuff but also some crazy intimate, no-budget movies. That's my problem. I only have one me, and I have a limited number of years before I die, and the biggest problem is that I like to do a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with movies and movies are very time-consuming, so you have to make choices, and that's really frustrating."

You can read more with Green on his upcoming movies over on ComingSoon.net some time in the next day or so.

Anything could be better than the original. I was throughly disappointed in that movie. It had a good plot, but poor script and score. It definately should be remade. It can't be anyworse than the original

Suspiria was so damn awful,I watched it once only. The music was bad, there was no gore,it wasn't scary at all. It was one of the worst movies that I have ever seen.

is gonna be hard to remake a dario movie. Hope he get his blessing.

it's obvious that Rick and Saad prefer to watch awful remakes of superior masterpieces. you guys can keep your sissy pg-13 remakes. these movies have endured the test of time. you guys should go get a job making these shlock remakes and crappy un-original movies.
by the way GOBLIN has scored some of the best soundtracks in horror movie history. i'm sure you'll be happy with Clay Aiken or Britney Spears doing your music on your remakes.

so much ignorance today, so sad.

Amen, jrrrz. Dario Argento is a wonderfully inventive and artistic filmmaker. I'm so tired of hearing people complain about horror films that aren't gory enough. Go mindlessly masturbate to worthless trash like "Hatchet" and stay the hell away from the classics. Where have all the intelligent genre fans gone?

Posted by: monster on March 5, 2008 at 23:52:06

suspiria is one of the greatest horror movies ever. I can't believe somebody said there was no gore in it. the opening shot shows an opened chest with a knife being plunged into the heart. hello? that's gore. Argento isn't about gore, he's about atmosphere and telling a scary ass story. the score is amazing, it's done by the superior Goblin who scored the original Dawn of the Dead as well as other Argento films, notably Deep Red. if they remake suspiria, it will suck. bad. they will have teens in it and set it in America and it will be rated PG-13. this is an awful idea.

by the way, Hatchet was a good horror flick as well. it was a drawback to the great horror films of the 80's.

Screw you jrrrz,I don't even like PG-13 horror movies. I forgot to mention Suspiria was boring as hell too, unlike you,I am not against remakes, however that doesn't mean that I don't think remakes can suck. If this remake is more down my ally, then I welcome it!

Jrrz,I got some words for you,**** THE MAINSTREAM. I'm 24 years old and don't have to do as you say just because we don't see eye to eye when it comes to what makes a horror movie enjoyable,I have said my peace to you,I'm putting my beef with you to rest once and for all. You are being so defensive.

Posted by: Saad on March 6, 2008 at 00:09:50

I agree with you monster,Hatchet was a good gory disgusting horror movie with a convincing looking hideous man,I'm glad I bought it on dvd. It's really pathetic how some people think everyone should like the same type of movie as them.

If I want to watch a good horror movie from a different country other than the States, then I would watch something like High Tension or Demons,I really enjoyed High Tension.

:)

I don't care if Argento isn't about gore.

Posted by: monster on March 6, 2008 at 00:27:15

hey, calm down, it's ok if you didn't like Suspiria. It's not for everyone. you did mention Demons so you earned some cool points from me. Demons scared the hell out of me when i saw it as a kid. i thought it was ****ing real lol.

Posted by: Saad on March 6, 2008 at 00:29:42

Have you seen High Tension monster?
I felt sorry for the blind guy in Demons.
if you haven't,I think you should. :)

Posted by: Saad on March 6, 2008 at 00:30:33

Don't worry monster,I'm cool with you.

Posted by: monster on March 6, 2008 at 10:02:40

of course i've seen high tension. i love aja, his films are getting better as each new one comes out.

Posted by: leslie vernon on March 6, 2008 at 11:04:45

leave the classics alone! this really pisses me off, no one can come up with their own ideas anymore. argento created a masterpiece here, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! i just read on another site that they're looking to remake rosemary's baby as well. whats next? bird with the crystal plumage? four flies? how about more of a splatter fest? wizard of gore anyone? get a clue hollywood, they're hasnt been a decent horror icon created in years aside from maybe leslie vernon from behind the mask.

Posted by: Saad on March 6, 2008 at 11:41:01

Aja was impressive with the Hills Have Eyes remake,I liked it alot.

d.g.green's **** have ALWAYS sucked ass! Since his 1st"script" @ ncsa. He should do a film about how he riiped his crew off on george washington instead & passed himself off as an actual"director" THAT's a TRUE HORROR story FOEDATAZZ!!!...

Posted by: Kyle on March 7, 2008 at 14:32:21

I'm stunned that readers of STYD.com are bashing the original Suspiria, and its score. Argento and Goblin are what horror is all about. Artful, inventive, creative. Any horror aficionado knows that the maestro and Goblin are the dynamic duo of classic Italian giallo.

Posted by: monster on March 8, 2008 at 14:47:33

I for one am not bashing the original Suspiria. I am totally against a remake of this film. the remake will just dumb it down and have a suck ass score by some metal bands or some rap ****.

Posted by: lola on December 21, 2008 at 09:16:35

i liked suspiria until the anti-climax at the end. the best part is the first fifteen minutes, the rest of the movie doesn't outdo the beginning. the end was unrewarding, i was like "noooo!!" when the credits started rolling.

still, im not for a remake. what is the point? why cant they use new ideas, if there are any...

Posted by: lola on December 21, 2008 at 09:18:49

oh, and p.s, i loved the score, it wouldn't have been three quarters as scary/suspensful without it
