An interesting tid-bit brought to us by everyone's favorite, jovial genre nerd Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) via the Del Toro Films website: The director says he has officially wrapped his first day of shooting on Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Also, Del Toro reports that Marco Beltrami will not be returning to score the sequel. Instead, those duties have been handed over to Danny Elfman.

"I feel privileged," Del Toro tells the site. "I have worked with Marco Beltrami many times and will work with him soon enough but I believe we will have a beautiful score with Elfman, whom I admire greatly - in fact the 'Title sequence' music cue had the 'Ta-de-dum-ta-de-dum' rythm by explicit request by me in an atempt to make it kind of Elfmanesque - and with whom I share a dark view of the world."

Beltrami, until now, has supplied the music for all of Del Toro's U.S. efforts beginning with Mimic; Javier Navarrete scored the director's art house genre pics "Labyrinth" and The Devil's Backbone.

The director goes on to say that he tried his best to carry over composer Chris Drake - who has been doing a bang-up job on the "Hellboy" animated features - but it just wasn't meant to be this time.

Elfman, of course, brought us memorable themes from Tim Burton's ouevre with the soundtracks for Batman, Beetlejuice and Pee Wee's Big Adventure fueling our formative geek years.
