Shawn Roberts Talks Wesker in Resident Evil: Afterlife

January 27, 2010
Shock Till You Drop caught up to actor Shawn Roberts (Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead) at the red carpet premiere of Edge of Darkness to talk about his upcoming turn in Resident Evil: Afterlife, the fourth installment in the video game adaptation franchise."I play Albert Wesker who is head of the Umbrella Corporation who is responsible for the outbreak of the T-virus, or the Uroboros virus," he told us, hinting that this entry may be extracting elements from Resident Evil 5. "It was nice to be in a position of sitting back playing with my puppets as they were. We finished in December and I guess right now it's just about making sure the technology gets into the screen so 3-D can happen."
Written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and of course starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, Roberts says, "The storyline goes on its own [in terms of its faithfulness to the game]. We made sure we brought elements in. The wardrobe is very similar and as close as we could get it. We have some fight scenes that are taken directly from the game. We're doing it for the fans so we want to do what makes them happy. The dogs come back. They're my pets which is cool."
"My character is such a favorite character in the games," he adds, "so I'm just like 'alright I don't want to piss anyone off.' You make it the best you can. The key thing is that it was fun. I would walk onto set and not even have my wardrobe, but wardrobe comes over and they hand me my gloves and give me my jacket. It just sort of takes shape. I'm a fan and I'm not disappointed."
Stay tuned for more on Resident Evil: Afterlife; we'll have a full set report in the coming months as we near the film's September 10 release. And look for Roberts in Edge of Darkness, opening in theaters this week.

Maybe they should call it Resident Evil: After 3 Bowel Movements ... Comes another.

He is wesker? do your best in this person...

You know, I've been thinking... and as ungood as the Resident Evil movies have become, I think we should count ourselves lucky that Uwe Boll isn't directing them. Because THEN even the first one would've been Absolute Crap. They'd be as bad as Bloodrayne, with the time-lapse fight scenes.

they want to make the fans happy. how about doing a remake that stays true to the first game , then a second one that makes the nemesis a bad ass and not some daisy. how about that.

i wanted a resident evil that had began with chris redfield, wesker, berry, and the rest, had experiments from the game like the plant 42,hunter,and a bad ass tyrant that does not talk and is in a experimental tube that takes wesker out,and zombies. they really screw this s#!t up and im pissed about it and want it fixed.make a remake like the first game and i know people will like it.

Remake?!.. Resident Evil?!... Why?
Don't you typically want to make a "remake" of a film that was interesting or entertaining to begin with?
I know!! Let's remake some crappy B horror movies from the eighties! Like... Troll!!!!!

They always say they're going to incorporate elements of the games. Why bother? they do it so half assed. I've lost any faith of seeing a real Resident Evil movie. I guess the games are going to have suffice. God knows P. Anderson's stupid ass will never change or get fired. Start over and throw Anderson into a project he cant ruin, if that's at all possible. Why can't they reboot this series so it can stay true to the games? They're rebooting spider-man but not this. It should be the other way around. God movie studios are dip-****s.

f^ucking awesome!! Shawn is going to make an awesome Wesker. i really think he's going to surprise many people and naysayers. i can't wait for this movie! i think it's going to be the best one yet (and i love all of them so far!).
Posted by: djblack1313 on January 27, 2010 at 17:51:53
chris, he said FANS, not FANS OF THE GAME (necessarily). you guys who complain about this KNOW you'll be going to see it. the movies are hits. each film makes more $ than the last one. so they have MILLIONS of fans. gamers and non-gamers.

Ok guys, enough is enough. Real fans or fake fans. It doesnt really matter. U ever wonder why the movies didnt stay true to the game. It's cuz then u would know the outcome. U would know who would die and wen. Is that a movie u wanna see. Cuz i dont. Ive been a real fan of the games as i completed them all over and over again. Even the latest installment res5, what was a bit dissapointed. Anyway, im a fan of the movies too. I love the fact that i dont know wats gonna happen. Only these little elements of the game that come, is not bad. Thats good. And really, all u haters. I respect ur opinion, but u gotta look deep in the game. Did u really wanna see a movie wher the actors look for weapon cases to stall ther items, or to mix herbs, or to walk in every room over and over again lookin for that next ink ribbon so they can safe. Be real, that aint a movie. And yus, games turned to movies usualy turn out bad. But in my opinion, Resident evil is the best succeeded. Go P. Anderson and go Capcom. now i gotta look for a new ink ribbon, cuz my text is runnin out. lol

Shawn was also in two of Romero's DEAD films, and the Canadian sex comedy GOING THE DISTANCE. I'd like to see how he is in this.

LOVE iT!

Well Alice is still in it so how's that being faithful to the game? Get rid of Mrs. Anderson so the actual game characters can be the main focus, is that so hard!? If they do want to go about changing things, change the story not the characters. The movies are good on their own, but they do not do justice to Resident Evil game series. It's like they stuck "Resident Evil" in the title to draw in the game-fans.

and Shawn was REALLY good in SKINWALKERS!

My crap was really good in the toilet bowl but does that make it any good? No. Sony is fcking this franchise like everything else. They need to go back to building Vcrs.
Posted by: djblack1313 on January 27, 2010 at 21:06:43
Ziggy you can say that "Sony is f^ucking this franchise......" til the cows come home but they are tremendously successful movies that have millions of fans. so they clearly are NOT F'ing the franchise.

Is it me or did anyone else notice that Milla Jovovich tweets (from onset of "Afterlife") has been deleted! Like I mean all of it, she used to have like over 2,000 tweets and now she has only around 200. The film wrapped around Dec. 17 and the tweets are from Dec. 22 and up. Do ya think it was a call from Sony to take down the tweets cause of the spoilers n stuff? Thoughts?
Posted by: Ziggy on January 27, 2010 at 22:13:53
DJ Black. Are the movies any good? No! These could have been the Night of the Living Dead of our generation... But they are generic action flicks which end with Millia holding her dead Naked self. they are silly, dumb and torn off of other films. I could write a better film with my anus.
This is the worst of our generation.

First of all to say this is a popular series is bull$h!t. Most people who even remotely enjoy the first movie hated the second two. Lets just call it like it is people, Sony is just trying to milk the last few drops out of a bad series while producing them cheaply. The only reason this series has even remotely made the numbers it has in theaters and DVD sales is because people like them for the generic zombie movies the series has been turn into. Oh and this this is for M. Myers: Are you that stupid or just trying to be because guess what you accomplish that. Really, a movie were characters look for weapons and save ribbons and repeat locals. Only an idiot in Hollywood would ever consider making a movie like this. Maybe you want a Mario Brothers movie where all you do is collect coins or jump on turtles. Then again maybe you want a Halo movie where people just drive warthogs in circles and teabag one another. What every loyal Campcom and resident Evil fan wants(Don't ever put yourself in this category because you are not) is a game that somehow remotely resembles the beloved franchise they grew up playing. Like many people on here and in other forums have said, where are the key characters that made this series, where is Chris, Jill, Barry, Leon. Well they are on the sidelines waiting for Alice to die off for a real movie series to be made. Then again, maybe Milla will just ruin that one because she seems to either date or married most of the directors in all the films shes done in her career. Would explain why such a horrible character would still be alive after all this time. I guess it's just not the the series going down but also Miss Jovovich. So in my last words i say to Sony, if any of you are out there and i know you are, remake this series, there is a reason Campcom made a straight to DVD CGI movie that many fans love.(oh and guess what it didn't follow the story lines from any game but did have characters we all know in love, hmm, i guess it can work out, can't it M. Myers.)

i think RE movies are complete bull****. RE its about horror, not comedy like they did in the one with mike epps (funny guy but so stupid character) and carlos oliveira was supposed to be more like rookie type and they did just the opposite. and how the hell does alice and company will be in los angeles in the next movie when in the last one they were heading to alaska?
Posted by: djblack1313 on January 28, 2010 at 01:17:23
so the fact that each movie has made MORE money (which means that the fan base has grown on each movie or is it that YOU people who bash it are also going to see it too?) than the last movie means that Sony is "trying to milk the last few drops out of a bad series while producing them cheaply"? the budget for AFTERLIFE is the biggest one yet,
M0V!3 M@N!@C. i'm not saying that $ success=a good movie but if each film makes more $ than it's predecessor than common sense says that people LOVE these movies (myself included). i'm also not saying they are cerebral, INCREDIBLE, world changing movies. they are fun, horror/action movies. period. i don't watch them for thought provoking, character studies. jeesh. and joe kerr how do you know that Alaska isn't a part of this. it IS. (they had film crews shooting in Alaska, doing certain shots).

First, Resident Evil...in fact, ALL Resident Evil games, were NEVER scary. Second, none of them were about horror, they were about conspiracies and even, at times, betrayal. They were action games with zombies and monsters.
These films take their own path, but if you look at Resident Evil 1, the general story about a team investigating the Umbrella mansion/labs, and its subsequent betrayal by an Umbrella employee is just about the same. They just added/deleted a few things.

I can't wait to see what goes on with Alice, Chris, Claire and Wesker... this should be fun. I loved all the Resident Evil movies except for the 2nd one because let's face it... the ****ed up Nemisis and i really wanted to see more of the S.T.A.R.S. members other than Jill... but i'm really happy they have the Redfield's in the movies. I wonder what other monsters they will bring into this film. More Lickers? Hunters? Crows? We all know everyone loves the zombie dogs. Wait wait wait... did he say Uroboros??? FML he did. We'll se how this one goes, but i'm super excited.

Waaaaah people don't look for bits of puzzle pieces, backtrack over the same areas ad nauseum, mix plants together, or see sharks in tanks! Waaaah, the actors actually move and shoot at the same time! Waaah, waaah, waaah. God, what a bunch of whining, idiotic trouser-monkeys you people are.
Watch the films or don't, like the films or don't, but stop *****ing about the MOVIES not being exactly like GAMES, especially when the games have paper thin plots and highly cliched wafer thin characters to begin with, and always have had. The only thing that disguides the games thin plotting was the slow rate that it unfolded at, and the atmosphere and fun of the games themselves, but the games were never that original, or that well written. So grow the hell up already and take off the rose colored glasses already.
