Greutert Bemoans Saw VII Decision
Source: Kevin Greutert
January 27, 2010
Whether he likes it or not, Saw VI director Kevin Greutert is indeed heading back to Toronto to direct Saw VII.
In a blog post entitled "Woo hoo! Lawyers are sending me to Canada tomorrow!" he writes this (Update: This entry has since been pulled from his site.):
I just had the task of telling my 83 year old mother that no, I'm not going to be allowed to direct the movie we were all so excited about when my family last got together, and that I'm being forced to leave town before getting a chance to see her again. Yes, I'll be filming people getting tortured YET AGAIN. So we'll have to put off me making a film she can actually watch for another year.
Which, I presume, leaves Paramount high and dry and without a director for Paranormal Activity 2. Hey, we hear David Hackl's looking for a gig now...
Furthermore, will Greutert find his happiness on the seventh Saw entry, scheduled to be done in 3D? I'd hate to be on that crew.

I wasn't at all impressed with "Saw VI", but for Lions Gate to do this to Gruetert has really gotten under my skin. They can go **** themselves for all I'm concerned. There is literally no one that benefits from this, even LG. Just the prick executives who are taking their toys and going home.

Jesus! don´t force the guy to direct the movie, it will result in another failure for the franchise, even more given the fact that he is done already and wants to move forward. It is logical, we will get an uninspired and boring movie, like saw Iv, when Bousman was tired and wanted his repo opera. Hire another director, there´s plenty and more talented

WOW! this is getting really ugly. i feel for Kevin though. and is he being "forced" to direct the movie? i guess if he wants to play the Hollywood game and not be black listed (or whatever) he HAS to eat crow and do this movie. but it just sounds really uncomfortable and ugly (on both sides).

wow- so I guess Saw VII will indeed SUCK! It might've anyhow, but to MAKE a director take on a film sure doesn't seem like it will at all enhance the film-making!

This is childish and pathetic on Lionsgate's part.

There's a lot of unemployed directors out there that would KILL to be in his spot. Maybe he should feel more thankful and fortunate, rather than put on the whole "woe is me" act. Just my opinion.

Screw Paranormal Activity 2,and screw Kevin's
complaining.

Lionsgate are dicks for doing this but Paramount isn't blameless in this. Hiring Kevin to direct PA 2 is like a big **** you to Lionsgate. But to force someone to direct a movie? I hope he doesn't take it all out on the movie and its fans.
Posted by: Space on January 27, 2010 at 16:38:55
So, instead of hoping you can make a better movie and have a better marketing campaign to compete with Paranormal Activity 2, the only option by Lionsgate is to force a contract option to keep the director and pry him away from the competition? That's a low class move. I will not support that movie (not that I was even going to see it anyway).
I hope Paramount fires back and uses David Hackl or someoen else Lionsgate has used in the past.
I also hope Kevin finds a way to stick it to Lionsgate during the filming of this movie. I'd put so much money on the table right now that this movie will suck just because Kevin doesn't want to make it and doesn't care. Heck, it'll probably rap filming fast too because if I was him, I would just go with 1st shots on EVERYTHING! lol

I think Lionsgate should let Greutert do what he wants and get someone who wants to do Saw 7 because the movie is not going to be as good as it should with someone if his heart is not in to it, and the film might get sabotage out of response of Greutert having his hand forced.

LMAO!!! Even the guy who directs the Saw movies calls it "torture porn", doesn't want to direct another one, and you schmucks STILL want to see more?!... Go rent a couple volumes of "Faces of Death" and jerk off in the dark alone, why don't ya?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha (deep breath) Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

If Saw VII isn't started yet I have a hard time believing it'll be done in time for their release date, that 3d conversion stuff takes way long and even if they get done in April with VII they're going to have a VERY short post production time frame in order to get it to the conversion house... So I get the feeling he wont be happy directing, even if he does forgive and forget this, at all cause he'll be rushed and under huge pressure.. I'm sensing Saw's demise coming soon, if not when this film is released then soon after..
Any way, I also want to point out how whiny he's being.. I get he was really excited to make PA2 and something his mother could see.. I can even understand he wants to visit his mother once more before running off to do a movie.. But for f**ks sake be THANKFUL YOU HAVE A JOB AT ALL! Some of us out here barely have food on our tables but here he is going "WELL F**K ME I HAVE TO LEAVE ONE MOVIE TO DO ANOTHER!" How many people get to say that, EVER? Seriously, don't get locked in a contract to do big time movie and make a nice chunk of money if you don't want to be pulled around like this, let someone who likes to put food in their mouths have it.. It just pisses me off..
Besides, another reason he should thank his lucky star for having a job at all was that Saw VI did so pitifully at the box office that there's absolutely no reason AT ALL they SHOULD have him coming back to direct beyond screwing the competition like they're trying to do. Its not a personal slight against him, its not even a kudos to his work on VI, it's all a big F**k YOU to Paramount for even thinking about putting a horror movie out around Saw time... I dont know how, after 6 years, they've managed to make every one SO AFRAID to put a horror movie out at the best time of year for them but I imagine it includes torture...

BoomingEchoes, well said. you bring up great points. Kevin should INDEED be grateful he has a job at all.

For the record, all the previous SAW films started shooting around February and made the October release date. They are shooting it in 3D, so there won't be any need to convert it in post-production.

I don't think PA was the only thing that made Saw VI less successful. Saw V drove alot of fans away (not me though) and most were uninterested in anything that Saw VI had to offer. Of course you add a hyped up horror movie in the mix and bam Saw goes down.
Saw VI was not a total failure though. It did make back double its budget it just didn't nearly as much as the previous 5 films.
I hope despite all this bull**** Saw VII turns out good.

Nothing like a blatantly unenthusiastic director being forced to direct another entry in an increasingly tired franchise. Really builds up the hype, doesn't it? Should be a good one!
Posted by: Vinny on January 27, 2010 at 19:13:21
He signed a contract that gave lionsgate the option if he didn't want to direct more saw movies than just the one then he should've told his agent and had it put in his contract so shut the hell up and go get paid tons of money when there is so many people out of jobs you whiney little *****
Posted by: ah on January 27, 2010 at 20:50:52
He should be thankful. As others have stated, many would KILL for the shot to direct a Saw movie.
Posted by: James on January 27, 2010 at 22:24:00
With him not happy about directing Saw 7, hope he doesn't do a crappy job. I myself enjoyed Saw 6. It's the best one since part 3. I just hope his unhappiness doesn't reflect on the project.

look the only way dis movie franchise will be great is if quentin tarantino directs it who else can do a better job please tell me
Posted by: ZombieLove on January 28, 2010 at 14:32:26
i sincerely hope he doesnt try to f*** up saw 7 just to spite Lionsgate
Posted by: tibbar on January 28, 2010 at 15:32:05
the saw franchise started sucking at.... II! without likable characters, it's just trite ****. is this what modern horror audiences want? just a bunch of random people being torn apart for an hour and a half? i feel sorry that this guy has to endure being a part of what will surely be an utterly forgettable horror flick. they should just film it on toilet paper, and get it over with. YAWN @ LG.

This battle is really between Kevin Greutart and Twisted Pictures and should be handled behind closed doors…looks really bad when you’re whining about how many people want you to direct their movie!

Forget the inhumanity of Lionsgate doing this to Greutert for a second. Think of what Lionsgate is doing to the fans of this long since fun series! They don't care what kind of film they get. Do you think a man who is only directing a movie because he has legal obligations to do so is going to put ANY love pr passion into that film? His heart is NOWHERE in this film, and that always comes through into the final product. Lionsgate doesnt care what kind of horse crap actually makes it into the theatres at the end of the day so long as they can slap the Saw logo on it (now in 3d!! woo! that will make up for it!). Hope all you saw fans out there are finally getting a glimpse of how Lionsgate views you...

@ Jeremy
They view most of the people who support Saw as stupid. As long as they crank out a movie every single year, they know there are some people with absolutely no taste that will keep seeing it no matter what. the film could be total crap, but will still make back it's budget at the box office. Guaranteed. That's the only reason why these movies keep coming out.
