Return of the Living Dead Book Needs Your Help

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
November 20, 2009

A book entitled "The Complete History of Return of the Living Dead" is in the works and promises to be an exhaustive look at the series, kick-started by Dan O'Bannon in the '80s. The film is a milestone in zombie cinema for countless reasons - from its humorous approach to the introduction that the undead love to eat brains. And it's about time someone was moving ahead with a companion book.

Gary Smart, co-writer of this endeavor, dropped us a line seeking help:

"The book has support from over 50 (so far) members of the ROTLD franchise who have offered to support the project and give exclusive interviews delving into the productions of some of the most loved movies in zombie cinema. Support has come from: Dan O'Bannon, Brian Yuzna, Ken Weiderhorn, William Butler, Don Calfa, Jewel Shepard, Beverly Randolph, Sarah Douglas, John Penney, Aimme Lynn Chadwick, Allan Trautman, Brian Peck, Linnea Quigley, Marsha Deitlein, Graham Henderson, John Philbin, Willaim Munns, William Stout to name but a few. We are waiting replies from a number of other cast and crew including: Clu Gulager, Melinda Clarke and James Karen.

We are in talks with MGM to allow us to use frame enlargements, stills and posters to compliment the text and personal photos of part one. However, Warner Bros., who now own the rights to Return of the Living Dead Part II has refused to allow us to use frame enlargements, stills and posters to compliment the text and personal photos with no explanation why, this is devastating to the project as fans want to know more about ROTLD II.

How can you assist Smart in convincing Warner Bros. to put out? Visit this spot to have your say and sign a petition. Who knows if it will work, but it's worth a try!

With Return of the Living Dead's 25th anniversary just around the corner, hopefully we'll see Grant's book hitting shelves next year.

Of course, I'll help sign that petition.

Signed it! I would also like to see a companion book for George A. Romero's Dead series. That would be cool too to add to this!

The first to ROTLD films were great. Loved how they used the same main actors but played them differently. After that the series went down hill fast. Hated Living Dead Three and the foreign made ones sucked eggs. I'm more than happy to support this project as long as it focus' on the first two films (which in my opinion are the only two films worthy of scrutiny) and ignore the others.

thanks so much for your support, the fans have been amazing!!

the book will focus more on ROTLD 1 (50%) Part 2 (15%) Part 3 (15%) and parts 4/5 (20%)

Again many thanks... please encourage others to do the same

Gary

Signed it. Great idea for a retrospective book.

I have a lot of love for Parts I-III (yay, Julie!). The last two, not so much.
