EXCL: Producer Updates Us on Silent Hill 2
Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
November 19, 2009
Silent Hill 2's future was looking pretty foggy. After grossing nearly $100 million in worldwide box office receipts, there was the question of whether a follow-up to Christophe Gans' 2006 adaptation of the Silent Hill video game was even going to happen. After all, it was met with a mixed audience reaction. Some were dissatisfied with the story; others appreciated the familiar villains and brutal violence.
Then, in September, Davis Films officially announced Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction) was returning to pen the next entry and production was to rev up shortly after Resident Evil: Afterlife wrapped in Toronto, Canada. Avary, however, was sentenced to prison for a year in the weeks following this news, leaving the status of the sequel up in the air.
"Well, we have had a bit of a hiccup with Roger," admits Afterlife and Silent Hill producer Don Carmody in an exclusive chat with Shock Till You Drop. "We're just debating whether we can wait for him. He's writing the script for sure."
Although actress Radha Mitchell has voiced interest in starring again (her involvement is unconfirmed right now), one original key player won't be back: director Gans. "I don't think he wants to come back. He'll have some input for sure. In his mind, I think he wanted to do the first one and for this he's very happy to consult, but I think he wants to direct something new," says Carmody who has some definite ideas about how to improve the Silent Hill franchise's big screen counterpart.
"I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public," he says frankly. "Silent Hill is not a blockbuster game like Resident Evil or the other games out there. It's a connoisseurs' game. It has its own, rabid fan base. They're not cheap, these things. You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more. I think that's all happening. Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character - without giving too much away - is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group."
Some will disagree, but I enjoyed the almost Fulci-esque over-the-top gore and ambiguity Gans brought to the first film, even if it was a bit messy. It sounds like the next film is going to be a more straight-forward trip for those who can't wrap their head around the weird aspects of this series. We'll see! More updates as they come in...

I loved the first one and the fact that it was gory and a little off key was what I loved about it. I just think that if they are going to make this one to appeal (make more money) to the public it just means that it is going to suck.

I have to agree with dlemos. The first one was good the way it was. Even my girlfriend liked it. I just hope that making it to appeal to a wider audience doesn't mean to make it more like the Resident Evil franchise (worse from one movie to another).

I loved the first film. Radha Mitchell is a fantastic actress, i hope they bring her back.

Silent Hill was the best horror movie in 2006 that had a wide release. It's also probably the best video game to movie translation in the sorry history of video game based movies.
Silent Hill is also my all time favorite video game franchise so I was happy with the Silent Hill movie even though I was disappointed that Harry was replaced with another character.
It sounds like they plan to use the story of SH3. A strait use of Sh2 story would be a great, dark, bleak movie.
There is also some really great stories from the Silent Hill comic from IDW that could be used if they want to draw from familliar material.

When Silent Hill becomes "accessible", it stops being Silent Hill. I just don't understand the point of developing a film that only hardcore fans of the games are really going to care about and not make it like the games. People who don't like the games wont like the film and the people who love the games will absolutely hate it. So either make it for the people who understand Silent Hill, or don't make it at all.

So much for my hopes of Pyramid Head raping stuff in the sequel.

I loved part one, I was hoping they would make silent hill 2 and my wish has come true!!

So everything this man has just said is...everything that fans like about the game and what made the first one original...we're not going to use and make it like Resident Evil. Or was that just me???

I only played the games a little bit before seeing the movie. The movie hooked me onto the games.
There's a winning formula in the first one. Just need to build on it, not tear it down!
In fact.. I kinda wanna watch Silent Hill now... grrr..

i've never played the games but i LOVE LOVE LOVE the movie. it's in my top 10 movies ever. and i LOVE the RES EVIL movies but the changing it up to make it more "accessible" is VERY worrisome to me. i don't want action movie (like RE) w/ SH2. and DEFINITELY BRING THE AWESOME RADHA MITCHELL BACK (and PLEASE no Pyramid Head rape scene. really, you NEED to see a rape scene with a monster?). lol.

I agree i hope they don't screw up the atmospheric style of the original Silent Hill movie for the dumbass MTV genration who have never played the games or understand it. I liked Christopher Gan's style and how he filmed the movie because it was just the right mixture of the games. The rusty/ash covered/blood filled purgatory looking world was really creepy..when everything turned to darkness, so i hope that returns with all the familiar Silent Hill demons.

BTW you can see the whole movie here in good quality legally at this link http://crackle.com/c/Silent_Hill.

That's the usual dilemma faced by comic/video game/novel adopters - make the film true to the material and fans will love it, but it won't necessarily make money. Think about it - how many Silent Hill fans are there in the US, let alone the whole world? Movies with great special effects are not cheap, as what Carmody said..
But I'd love a Silent Hill sequel.. the first was for me one of the all-time best!

It could be worse, guys. I mean, Uwe Boll could've got his grubby, delusional hands on the franchise...
And like with any movie that "sells out," as the directors would be doing if this is true, there's at least SOMETHING in it worth watching. We'll just see what happens, I suppose.

Well, if they follow through with the cryptic message of "Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character - without giving too much away - is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group." then we can pretty much assume that Silent Hill 3 will be the source of the story for the second film, which is only fair as it continues the story of the first game anyway. That would also mean that Radha Mitchell would not necessarily have such a large role this time around.-I won't go into details for the non-cognoscenti of the games as I do not want to spoil any aspects of the plot. However, I see a silver lining in all of this that if they can successfully translate SH3 to the big screen and not make mince meat out of it ala Resdient Evil series, which stinks entirely to high heaven, they may have then a shot at coming back and doing a respectfully faithful and proper translation of the second game as the third entry in the series of films since it has no plot ties to the first and third games, thus keeping the story of the first and third games within the realm of the first two movies, closing that story and starting fresh with the third film...

Oh god, these people...
As a Silent Hill (-game)-fan, I found the movie to be just horrible. Reasons? First of all, it took most of its material from the first game, but over-simplified and purely raped it. For example the Alessa's background was simplified so that it seem'd like she was just going crazy and revenging something. Same with Dahlia.
And the monsters in the movie? They pretty much had no real point of being there, and they just danced on their scenes for a moment and then got forgotten. The Pyramid Head everybody loves now was also merchandised, eventho' it especially had the deeper meaning (AND no connections to the first game's plot).
Biggest problem: TOO MUCH PEOPLE. The games were all about being alone in the twisted world of SH, with just handful of other people appearing at best, all with their own problems. Sean Bean. The biggest mistake was creating that stupid flashback scene to explain EVERYTHING. There goes our mystery and mind****, as if everything would not have been over-Hollywood-ed already.
My recommendations for the sequel: Greatly reduce the amount of people appearing, add more and longer disturbing imagery, DON'T USE the plots of the games as the base, and don't recycle the monsters. Best case scenario, don't make the sequel a direct sequel to the first movie at all.

If you're not going to stick to a great working formula don't bother making a sequel.

Well Resident Evil is popular but they still managed to make films that are totally unlike the original games anyway. Broadening teh audience can still happen by marketing a film on it's uniqueness from teh run of the mill horror!
I do agree that the story can be better and a bit more straightforward approach. I'm okay with that so long as it's not stupidly simple. But this is pretty odd to say considering the ending of teh first film pretty much spelt out everything through a monologue. But they can also slowly unravel more about the cult mythos and how Alessa's power works, but at the same time they should keep a little mystery and ambiguity to it too. That's what makes the games so great. You understand the story in a straightforward way, but the elements workign in teh background are what is intriguing and that's always veiled in a mysterious fog that only offers clues that the viewers/players ought to piece together on their own.

I'll say it.
I would'nt mind seeing what Uwe Boll would do with a Silent Hill movie. Has anybody watched SEED? That movie was the happiest suprise of 2008. It was bleak, gritty, dark, grim, creepy, unsettling. I didn't know Boll wrote and directed it untill the opening credits and my expectations sank. As the movie progressed I was blown away by it. It was everything that movies like Saw and Hostel try to be shot up with a speedball mixed with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Serial Killer tading cards. Postal was funny as all hell.
Something stange has happened to Uwe Boll, the man can make really original, enjoyable and horrifying horror movies!
Uwe Boll's Silent Hill would possibley be one of the most twisted horror movies ever made.

I just got one thing to say if it stays to the original design it will be a hit with alot of people. sure resident evil got tons of box office hits and thats just because of the name i personally didnt think it was fitting for the name it needed more gore and needed to fit with the games more but if you stay with the original design of the movie it will be good

Alright before I start with my thoughts on Silent Hill 2 i'm gonna just inspect all the pros and cons of SH1(movie)
Plot: Well, to be honest I was at first strangely comforted by the fact that the first movie kept the first game's traditional plot: Parent looking for a kid. But seriously.... A stupid witch burning cult? WTF? What happened to the Order? I friggin loved the Order?!? And what happened to the God fetus thingy??? T_T
Characters: Harry was given a vagina....And our protagonist is a sissy who runs away from monsters.... Noooooooooo!!! Lisa Garland.... the character who's death made me cry on the first game is now a pointless cameo....DX Cybil turned to a tomboy cop who's slightly annoying... Good points?: Cybil still kicks ass XD Dahlia's role was replaced by a maniac power-hungry cult leader by the name of Christabella.... (which also happens to be the name of that crazy Alessa-ish kid in the SH comic spin-off....man Christabella is like a cross breed between Dahlia Gillespie-Claudia Wolf-and-Christabella teh product? An even crazier annoying ***** who I just want to gun down with an unlimited sub-machine gun.... Oh and what's up with Anna???? Stupid ass Cult members....
Atmosphere: Still brilliant! This is the only thing that I was actually quite impressed... Almost as gritty disturbing and paraboid as SH2
monsters: Ugh, well liked the grey children. The nurses were good though they felt like they were merely there for a cameo.... the janitor was a good twist
Pyramid head: here's my hypothesisI think Pyramid did serve a purpose there, I think Pyramid head was in the movie since he served as another way to punish the Cult members for their sins
Alright now on SH 2
pretty much biased since I would love someone to play Heather... Oh well as long as they keep coming up with new twists same atmosphere, complex characters and plot and even surprise endings I'm all game for another sequel!

honestly, could not have said it better.
ps. Hollywood is a effing idiot!

Yeah. Guess that's right but seriously if they made Silent Hill 2 just like the game it loses the predictability... you already know what's going to happen and ****.... You already know James was the one who killed Mary and it's going to be boring,,, SH3 on the other hand? Would be nice.... Ok that was a completely biased decision... sorry but how about making a new twist and adding more SH characters to the plot? James looking for Mary and at the same time Heather is looking for revenge and who knows.....? Maybe add Henry who's locked in one of the rooms? Sure that movie might be ****ty but c'mon Hollywood made it worse.... I mean Cult members?
Posted by: James Sunderland, lol. on May 26, 2010 at 01:26:25
NO NO NO.
PLEASE don't continue off the first one :c the first was just fine the way it is and needs no more of that story to be told. That's like continuing the movie "The plague dogs", it just wouldn't work.(Couldn't think of a better example)
Make it about the second game, that makes WAY more sense being these are supposed to be based off the games...PLEASE don't ruin the whole film franchise! The movie is going in the right direction, don't stop it from continuing that way.
if you do it this way, it will still appeal to the public just as much!
