EXCL: Director Talks Frankly About Poughkeepsie's Absence

In response to this week's
2009 MIA list, director Drew Dowdle took a quick break from the production of
Devil to weigh in on the absence of
The Poughkeepsie Tapes, which he collaborated on with his brother John.
"We were hoping that the incredible success of Paranormal Activity would spark MGM to finally release The Poughkeepsie Tapes. The magnitude of MGM's situation has been well publicized in recent days," he says, referring to the studio's recent placement on the auction block.
"Sadly, I feel the best chance for our film is if another distributor recognizes the opportunity and makes a move to buy the rights. Otherwise I'm afraid it's going to remain on the shelf. Obviously it's been a very disappointing outcome for my brother and me and everyone involved with the making of the film. On a positive note, we're thrilled beyond belief for Oren and everyone involved with Paranormal. It's an incredibly good sign for the future of small budget genre films and a reminder to the world that the high-quality, small-budget genre films can compete with big boys. And in Paranormal's case, kick their asses."
Well put. Perhaps another distributor will swoop in to rescue the film; until that day comes, we'll just have to be patient. To learn more about
Poughkeepsie's history,

I managed to see The Poughkeepsie Tapes, and it is a real gem. It is really too bad that distribution companies are so scared to take a chance on anything different so original, and well made, movies like this sit on the shelf just because they aren't sure how to market them.

Have a drink, "LaMorte". You're taking this too personally.

See I don't buy that the guys who made this never heard of the real serial killer from Pougkeepsie.. Frankly you don't talk, write music, or make a movie about Poughkeepsie unless you've been there/heard about things that go on there.. otherwise people just look at you like your crazy because they think you made up the word, even if they too are from New York.
That being said, as someone who lived in Poughkeepsie around the time the movies set, 2001, this is too eerily similar to the events of the real killer.
Actually being close to the real thing was weird enough, I had friends who went to the school the real guy worked at. I lived maybe just a few miles from the house and used to play pool at the pool hall even closer to his house.
Really wish they'd just release this.

I had no idea that there was a real serial killer from Pougkeepsie... to behonest,I wasn't sure if it was a real place or if it was just one of those names that sounded real enough. I'll bet that would make the movie even creepier.
