Writer Tapped For Fright Night Remake

Marti Noxon, a writer/producer on AMC's Mad Men has been hired to write a remake of Tom Holland's beloved classic Fright Night for DreamWorks Studios. The screenwriter has a bit of history with vampires having worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. (She took over for Joss Whedon as Buffy's showrunner from the sixth season on)

Producers Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig set up the Fright Night project in May. DreamWorks executive Mark Sourian is overseeing for the studio, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The original 1985 film, written and directed by Tom Holland starred Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale as Charlie Brewster, a curious teen that discovers his next door neighbor is a vampire.

For years, there have been numerous attempts to revive a Fright Night remake with all indications pointing towards a name only remake that would take place at an amusement park. (Funhouse anyone?) Thankfully, it seems their sticking to the original films' story. The article says, "The new version will keep the comedy-horror tone while modernizing the effects."

Considering vampires are "hot" at the moment, the revival of this Fright Night remake isn't surprising. Let's hope for the best!

Thanks for the good news before bed, guys!!!

This would be a fun remake to see. I love the original, and I'm actually from the town that William Ragsdale is from. I got to sit down with a close relative of his one day and have coffee, and the guy talked a lot about William's success with the film, and how William remained humble after his popularity swelled. So I'd love to see Ragsdale make some kind of come-back with this, provided he's still in the movie business.

Fright Night's awesome!!
... but... another remake??

There could be so much more done with Fright Night, story-wise. Do an original story along the same vein. But please not another remake!

Knowing Marti Noxin's work with Buffy and Angel, I am now officially hyped for this remake! Great pick Sony! :)

Unfortunately vampires are "hot" right now for all the wrong reasons. I remember when vampires were monsters and not goth characters from romance novels that get teenage girls all giddy. And now they're dragging werewolves into that romance crap as well. Maybe something like this remake can turn that around.

This is one of my all time favorites! Can,t help but wonder: will they keep the "fruit eating tanned vampire" angle! haha!
Aside from that tiny detail, the movie was awesome. Just don't make Gerry Dandridge glowin the sun and DO bring back Peter Vincent!

Even though I think a Fright Night remake is completely pointless (as most remakes are), I am now officially somewhat interested with Marti Noxon on board. I liked a lot of what she did on Buffy/Angel. If they can find that right mix of comedy and horror that her former writing partner Joss Whedon seems to have done so well with Cabin in the Woods, I think this could not completely suck. But I'll expect the worst until I see something to prove otherwise.

This will suck. I don't care what Marti Noxon writes the studio will want something decidedly Twilightish and everyone knows it. This time in three months we'll get to hear about a different writer either being hired or rewriting Marti Noxon's script.

Loved the original, would love to see a good remake. Please make it R rated!!!!!!

i love both fright night and fright night 2, however im not sure about a remake. i dont doubt Marti Noxon being a good writer, is just that there are already a lot of remakes around already. instead a remake it would be cool to see maybe another story that continues the original fright nights, maybe Charlie Brewster taking the role of "Fearless Vampire Killer" in honor of his friend Peter Vincent (nobody can replace Roddy McDowall as Peter Vincent) and helping a new dude that is in a similar situation than he was in the first fright night or something like that... i pretty much agree with Jaguar about there is a lot more than could be done with the original story instead of a remake. as a fan i hope they dont screw fright night, so the best wishes to all the people trying to make this revival a reality.

@ Merol:
Good flash buddy! Let's keep the continuity in time and make Charlie a rogue vampire hunter in 2009. I'd watch that!

Bad News,

A bunch of unimaginative soul-less rapists make yet another piece of unrelenting garbage to waste our time and drain your pockets.
Wake-up people! stop supporting the rape train.
This has been the absolute worst decade for horror films ever. So what if it made a ton of money for the scum that perpetuated it.
True lovers of horror cinema will one day look back on the past years (2001-2009) with disgust and shame. It's hard to even see what was good through the mountain of greed and brainless sludge.
WE DON'T NEED A REMAKE OF FRIGHT NIGHT!
We don't need anymore vile remakes or "Homages" or "Tributes."
Either think of something new or STOP MAKING MOVIES!

You know, usually the first one to join the "not another f*#%ing remake!" bandwagon, I have to disagree this time... You see, back in the eighties, when the last Fright Night (2) was released in theaters, audiences were starting to warm up to this universe, and the demand for a sequal was expected. But then we had the large "B Horror Movie Boom" that took place, and it was shifted to the backburners. I think now would be an ideal time to continue with the franchise that was meant to be cerealized from the beginning!

Originality and a strong desire for it isn't a bandwagon.
I saw Fright Night when it first arrived in theaters. It is a fine horror film and always will be. IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE REMADE!
Give me one intelligent reason why we shouldn't scream out for something new. Give me one intelligent reason for all of our favorite horror films being remade into awful parodies of the original films.
Did you really truly enjoy any of these remakes over the original films?
Tell me which ones were better.
I dare you to find a reason other than greed and money for these productions.
They are made by people who don't care about you or your love for horror films.
All they care about is money.. YOUR money in THEIR pockets. FULL STOP.

Remake not required. They should also scrap the Poltergeist remake, what the hell are they thinking - these movies are fine as is.

@Christopher:
I'm not even gonna start with you cause you have a strong opinion and you stick by it. Good for you. But the main thing about the studios is exactly that:making money. I accepte it cause its their thing. What we all get out of it is ENTERTAINMENT! I don't expect a movie to make me brighter, I just want to have a good time. So if a studio brings back a franchise that I loved as a child, of course I'll go see it and pay for it. I'm paying to see my favorite characters back on the big screen. If the movie sucked, well, too bad! So I suggest you try to stick to your opinions and stop watching those movies you hate so much and let us be entertained a little. Live and let live I say.
