Williamson: Scream 4 Twists, Modern Inspirations

Source:PopWrap
November 11, 2009

Kevin Williamson is juggling a lot of projects, but the one we're keeping a careful eye on is Scream 4 (check out AFM teaser art).

In a recent interview with the NY Post's PopWrap, Williamson - who is still writing the sequel - addressed recent rumors about killing off Sidney Prescott (returning actress Neve Campbell) by saying, "The thing about Scream 4 is that there are a lot of twists and turns, so I can't promise anything. There are a lot of moving pieces, so we'll see - but if you're a Scream fan, I think you're really going to like it."

While the initial Scream trilogy took its cue from '80s slasher films, the upcoming films will have to comment on horror in the last decade. Williamson says much of Scream 4 is inspired by "manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, there's some PG-13 horror movies in there, vampire movies, M. Night Shyamalan movies and torture porn movies, even though they've come and gone."

He maintains that the film will have its fair share of wit, but it still needs to be scary. For more click here.

Inspired by Manga? Asian ghost girl movies? M. Night Shamalamadingdog? Tortune-porn? Well, I guess Kevin is purposely setting out to write a suck-ass movie then. :( Too bad. At least we still have the original SCREAM.

I wouldn't say that, Joe35. It looks like Kevin's going to poke fun at all the cliches that have come from the horror genre since the end of the 90s, just like Scream poked fun at the cliches from 70s/80s slashers. And if there wasn't any categories MORE ripe to poke fun at, it would be all the crap that made it big in the last decade.

Wow. I really like the idea that it's not targeting the slasher movies but more recent horror movies. It should be great!

For one thing that teaser art sucks, any one with a camera and a Halloween mask could have shot that. And the tag line on it only shouts one thing to me, reboots! Because if the decade had taught is we'll keep seeing reboots and remakes because Hollywood is all out of ideas.

As for the whole Neve Campbell thing: When did they sign her on to do the movie at all? Last I'm sure we all heard she didn't want to touch the series again and the only people willing to come back were David Arquette and his wife, Courtney Cox.. My bets are, if Sydney is in it and dies, that she'll go the same way Drew Berrymore did in the first one and be killed in the first 5 minutes, but we probably wont see more then the back of her head, because it wont be Neve.

And the Inspiration just sucks.. Vampire movies? will the mask sparkle now?.. Torture porn? Yeah that'll get ratings... M. Night's movies were never scary, some suspense maybe but they're taking them way out of context as inspiration for this... and my favorite "there's some PG-13 horror movies in there" I'm sorry but almost all horror in the last 10+ years has been PG-13 because R's don't sell, So to say there's "Some" is putting it very lightly, specially since this movie will probably shoot for a PG-13 itself.

I wish they'd just shelf this series and make a new and original series instead.

BoomingEchoes - Neve has already said that she is going to be in SCREAM 4. Check YouTube! Don't assume anything when you don't even know the facts!

i don't know why people are saying that the movie is ganna suck because of his inspirations. he's going to make fun of them, like he did in the last screams with the 70's/80's horror, he's not going to make the movies just like'em.

i can't wait for these movies

I hope it's R rated or cert 18 in the UK.

Wow, you people are really retarded. The Scream movies are a send-up of genre cliches. Saying that he's taking cues from these sources means he's going to be lampooning them. There's not actually going to be Asian vampires running around.

Idiots.

I had high hopes for Scream 4 until this article, so instead of Ghostface being a slasher killer he's now going to be a supernatural-asian/manga ghost who enjoys putting people through torturous games? This sounds like one of the "Scary Movie"s.
