Weinsteins Hold onto the Hellraiser Remake Dream

Source:The Weinstein Co.
November 4, 2009

No ifs, ands, or buts about it: The Weinstein Company is determined to redo Hellraiser.

In their 2009 American Film Market guide, in a two-page spread, is Clive Barker's Hellraiser. Barker is still listed as an executive producer, but there is no writer and no director attached.

The re-telling of Clive Barker's classic horror masterpiece. Based on Barker's critically acclaimed novella "The Hellbound Heart," Hellraiser tells the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. Having lost his earthly body to a trio of forsaken demons - lead bby one of the most enduring horror characters of all time, Pinhead - he must force his former mistress to bring him the necessary human sacrifices to complete his body. Clive Barker's Hellraiser promises to be a terrifying journey into the darkest corners of the soul.

So reads TWC's synopsis.

Now, the Hollywood trades reported recently that Bob Weinstein was mulling over doing the film in 3-D. But there is no mention of that motive in the film guide.

It's already ruined. It's in 3-D. I'll pass

They had my interest when they were working with the directors of INSIDE and, later, MARTYRS. Since they chose to fire those guys, presumably because they had ideas and a vision of their own, I have no interest in this new version. It's obvious they don't want to make a good and interesting new version of this story (which would be possible since the original was quite different from the novella) and are more concerned about getting a save, sanitized and easily marketable cash in. If I were Barker I'd make sure my name wasn't in the title of this future turd.

Last time we heard about this they were ruining the make-up to the point where Barker didn't want to have any thing to do with it. Now they want it to be in 3-D.. screw that..

Take the original script and update it, Get Clive to direct again, get Doug Bradley back as Pinhead and recast the rest. Then give it a bigger effects budget then the Original and get to work WITHOUT the stupid 3-D.. It doesn't get easier then that...

I can tolerate other remakes and 3-D craziness but not with this series. And I swear if the Weinsteins screw this up I'm starting a riot.

I was very excited about this originally. They actually hired Barker to write the script. I read an interview where he was really excited and had all these ideas he couldn't put in originally because the budget wasn't there, but now he could do it.

This remake lost me when they threw out his script because it was too much for them.

This movie has no hope of being any good. At all!

what's the fuzz of 3-D? I think it's gonna scare some serious **** with Hellraiser. And if yeah, it's a mistake that they kick Pascal Laugier away...but anyway who knows? Maybe Laugier pulled away himself, just look at what a noob Alexander Aja is now...

ok let me get this straight ... they liked the concept of Hellraiser so they rehired Clive barker to write a script then THEY DIDNT like the stuff he came up with FOR HIS OWN EFFIN characters ? so they decided to toss the mans hard work and brilliance to get some NooB to do a crappy script that will not even compare to the original ?

**YOU DONT GET A MOVIE DEAL , hire the creator THEN TOSS OUT HIS WORK because he clearly showed how much he loved his legacy, its not called BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS by writers for nothing **

WAY TO EFFIN GO a**holes . wasted our time and ruined yet another Classic . i Effin bet its going to be all Frag'en EMO and **** .

The Weinsteins (Whine-stinks) need to retire. GO AWAY, and for the love of movies, stop making them!

hey i m in it for the 3d.

Why does every horror movie have to be made in 3-D now?

Is it because no one can come up with a good story so the 3-D gimmick is just used to sell tickets? I think so...

I remember talking with Doug Bradley at the airport about 3 years ago about this film. He wasn't to bummed that he would no longer be pinhead but you could tell he just deals with it. He knows how the business works and expects no less.

Well said. Another notorious example of this phenomenon is what happened to the Elm Street prequel. Wes Craven had the intention of writing and directing a prequel to "A Nightmare on Elm Street". This would have been non-supernatural suspense thriller about Fred Krueger's crimes as a serial killer, concluding with his capture, release and subsequent immolation at the hands of an angry mob. The prequel would have portrayed Krueger as a twisted, very believable human monster. The idea was to make a psychological horror film....something genuinely scary. Robert Englund repeatedly stated that he was eager to make that film with Craven..but New Line gave it a pass and made Freddy Vs Jason instead. This remake of Hellraiser falls into the same category of "what might have been".

"Clive Barker's Hellraiser"

...should be renamed 'Bob and Harvey Weinstein's Hellraiser'. Anything else would be a lie.

God I wish someone would come up with an original idea!...has hollywood just given up?....sequel after sequel, remake after remake, or should I say reimagination! like were dumb enough not to know that just means remake, and why do they always mess with the classics that shouldnt be messed with?

okay rant over!
