Alan Ball Drops More True Blood Season 3 Hints

Source:The Advocate
October 27, 2009

The Advocate recently had a chat with True Blood series creator Alan Ball and he dropped several more juicy tid-bits about what we can expect from the next season of the hit HBO series.

When asked if any new gay characters might be introduced in Season Three, he says, "We'll be meeting the vampire king of Mississippi and his long, long-term companion -- and by long-term I mean really long-term -- Talbot. I think Lafayette may meet a love interest, and certainly Pam, who works with Eric, she's certainly got a lesbian vibe -- I don't know that that's all she is, but she certainly does seem to appreciate the women."

The interview brings up that vampire queen Sophie-Anne is romantically linked to Sookie’s cousin, Hadley. Will that factor in next season? "I think Sophie-Anne is definitely interested in Sookie," explains Ball. "But I don't believe it's for sexual or romantic reasons but she is definitely interested in Sookie and whatever it is about Sookie that is special beyond the realm of what is human, and that's something that we definitely will learn more about in the upcoming season."

As the show progresses, Ball and his team have tried to stay true to the original source material, while tweaking and added new story elements whenever possible. Does he ever confer with writer Charlaine Harris about changes he makes to the novels? "Charlaine put it very succinctly at Comic-Con -- she said, "I don't tell Alan how to write his show and he doesn't tell me how to write my books." We have a very, very good relationship; a mutual respect and admiration relationship, and I think the books have certainly been good for the show and the show has certainly been good for the books, but they are two completely different mediums and I think we both respect the boundaries of that.""

That's such baloney, that they're trying to stay true to the books. Not that I mind, but they've completely changed both the plotlines and the characters. In some ways for the better, in other ways not. Keeps readers guessing and watching, though, which probably suits their purposes.

I've read the first 3 books and am half way thru the 4th. I must say, I enjoy the books a lot, but I'm really enjoying the direction they have taken the show as well. I dont mind that the books focus mainly on just Sookie, after all it is the "Sookie Stackhouse" novels. But I love how the show has expanded on the characters. I can't wait to see how Season 3 picks up, and to find out who took Bill. I'm willing to bet Lorena, but I guess we'll see.
