Akkad Offers Some Clarification on Halloween 3D

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
September 10, 2009

Last night, producers Malek Akkad and Andy Gould were joined by the lovely ladies of Halloween II and Tyler Mane for a special screening of the Rob Zombie film in Thousand Oaks. During a Q&A, Gould and Akkad was pressed for details on the recently announced Halloween 3D.

The former repeated what was said already: Zombie would not be back for a third round. Akkad, however, jokingly reminded him that the director said he wouldn't return for a sequel after the first film. "There will most likely be a '3,'" Akkad told the audience. "We're trying to figure something out."

I caught up to Akkad outside the theater moments later to ask about the weekend news break that positioned Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine 3D) as the prime contender for the director's chair. The producer stressed that they're looking at a number of directors. Lussier is definitely one and because he's toyed with 3-D once already, that is an appealing factor. Akkad said they're currently waiting to see what Lussier's take is going to be.

So, for now, it appears Halloween 3D does not have a "locked" director.

I hope it doesn't have a "locked" existence.

Please do not make it!

Honestly if this film is a sequel to Halloween II theres no way I'm seeing it, H2 was by far the worst halloween film ever made, hell id watch the original Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (The myer-less sequel) over Zombies film. Hasn't Akkad seen that a lot of true Halloween fans HATE the fact that he basically gave Rob Zombie the halloween franchise to use as toilet paper?

I can't think of any movies that come out once a year that are any good. Sure, they may make money, but most of the time the story within the movie isn't very good.
What I believe they should do is stop all together. Since they aren't gonna do such, then they should take the time to write a better script for starters.

Its way too soon to be discussing a 3rd Halloween...look at what happened in 88-89 with 4 & 5 being released back-to-back...it stalled the franchise for 6 years!!!

Give it a couple years at least, Mr. Akkad

I haven't seen H2 yet, but I plan on this weekend. I honestly haven't had the opportunity. I am going in with an open mind, but I haven't been impressed with the trailer or the stupid mask-less pics of Mane. Just not Halloween without the Shat-mask!!!

hey calum...

how much money are you at risk to lose if they make halloween 3?
let me help you with that math....

that'd be ZERO.

youre not bankrolling it, nor do you have to see it.

Gimmick first?
Story second?

It will be a masterpiece!!

Posted by: Eo on September 10, 2009 at 10:17:04

Yea H2 was terrible. If zombie is back i wont see it, but i dont see him involving himself in a 3d halloween movie..doesnt sound like something he would be into.

Will probably check it out if its a differnt director but barely a year in and im already getting burned out on 3d. the only thing in 3d in FD were the kills..and for that it was a waste of my extra 3 bucks..how can you go from making MBV which is completly 3d to another studio doing a straight gimmick one? pisses me off

any news on the new Nightmare on Elm Street or the Fright Night remake?

Posted by: Cgace on September 10, 2009 at 10:58:04

I personally like the halloween movie series, i like "H2" even though its not one of my favorites of the halloween series..im glad to see that they want to do "H3D", but i hate the whole 3D effect.."My Bloody Valentine" was awful..cheesy..as well was "Final Destination 4"

H2O? H3D? H4Shame. :(

No way will I watch it if it's a continuation of Zombies Remake.

If they make it a sequel to the originals then perhaps. But I doubt they will make another one.

I forget where I heard/read this, but Steven Miner (Friday the 12th Parts 2 and 3, H2O, Lake Placid) is also tipped to be a contender. Too bad each of those credits is progressively weaker, and two of his most recent works were the direct-to-disc Day of the Dead and Jessica Simpson's Major Movie Star.

I know Mother of Tears didn't exactly live up to its potential, and word on Giallo is uglly, but it sure would be fun to see what Argento would do with this...

You read that hear, sir. ;) Akkad said Miner may have been one of the names on the list.

Well put george. Gimmick 1st, story second probably means that the film will rely on over the top 3D kills, which will make for a pretty weak film in my opinion. MBV3D was mediocre at best. Feck the gore, add the tension.

i loved H2, but i agree that i don't even know what they could come up with that would be any good for H3. Patrick would be a good choice. he did the 3D thing wonderfully in MBV3D, (UNLIKE the abysmal, god awful FD4). but a HALLOWEEN movie does NOT need 3D. it should rely on the story itself.

Posted by: Axeman on September 10, 2009 at 15:56:55

Let me get this straight. Are you people telling me that you did not like Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween?

Because I loved it. I want to see more than just michael as an adult killing people. To be able to jump into michael's world as a kid and see why he became the way he did was brilliant. I did not see the 2nd one yet but I plan on it.
Some people not might get the zombie films but the horror industry needs more director's like Zombie.

While I know that a HALLOWEEN 3:H3/3-D will be made,my only main thought here about this is just which direction will this soon-to-be-made film go,considering that we already had 10 films that went in five completely different directions(with each new direction ignoring the xistence and continuation of the last),ala Carpenter's first two HALLOWEENs,the Michael Myers-less HALLOWEEN III,HALLOWEENs 4,5,and 6(the Jamie Lloyd/Main In Black/Cult Of Thorn trilogy),HALLOWEENs H20 and RESURRECTION(an older Laurie Strode again meets Michael Myers),and Rob Zombie's two HALLOWEEN films, for just which direction(and which possible new storyline)will this new upcoming film undertake...

Posted by: Steven Millan on September 10, 2009 at 16:35:41

I actually meant to say: Man In Black

Otherwise,it would be interesting to see what Dario Argento would do with a HALLOWEEN film(even though those films aren't up his alley),as well as Alexandre Aja.

Posted by: Cgace on September 10, 2009 at 17:55:48

A scary movie needs to be a scary movie, not some 3-d thrill ride (cheese fest)..michael myers is played out to be the boogeyman..then make a great story and have things in the movie that make you jump and get scared...thats what a "Halloween" movie should be

Posted by: SexyGeek on September 10, 2009 at 18:21:25

I find myself agreeing with most of these comments (sans the anti-Zombie comments) regarding the existence of this film. Throwing together a 3D film in less than a year without even so much as a story notion is going to blow up in their faces. Rushing into a 3D version of Halloween just because FD4's poorly executed gimmick put the hurt on H2 is ridiculous. A year from now, who is to say the 3D "fad" is even still going to be as relevant?

To emasculate and disrespect any of the existing continuities by forcing a subpar, gimmick-laden sequel is a terrible idea. (Well, admittedly, it can't be worse than Busta Rhymes... but still.) And starting yet another continuity is definitely not something we need right now.

It's too soon, and snap decisions are being made without any real thought as to what the hell they're doing.

Do not star with this **** again in every mention of H3 You all say Im not going to see it and you do any way so shut up.

Posted by: Halloween Fan on September 10, 2009 at 22:43:47

Here's just an idea but how about the studios give Wes Craven a shot at directing a Halloween film. He was a master with Freddy Krueger and I wonder what he would do with a Michael Myers film.

Posted by: john on September 11, 2009 at 00:47:33

i hope they get a real director like quentin tarantino, robert rodriquez, Aja Alexander or eli roth to do the next one. aja has just done a 3-d for the studio.

Posted by: Halloween Fan on September 13, 2009 at 11:19:26

Quentin Tarantino's Halloween 3-D sounds cool. Just please don't let Ronny Yu get his hands on this franchise. He has no idea how to make a horror movie scary. See Bride of Chucky and Freddy vs. Jason.

Halloween Fan ronny yu is a great director tarantino sucks.
