Anne Rice's Lestat Ripe for a Reboot

August 14, 2009

Vampires are hot again. No doubt about it. Gracing tabloid magazines, the internet, the television, the big screen. Everyone is trying to get a piece of the bloodsucker craze.

Since last year, we've heard rumblings that the world of Anne Rice's vampires was going to be shaken up in some form or another. We were tipped off by someone in her camp that "Pandora" was coming to the screen. Didn't happen. However, it appears Universal Pictures is going to move forward on reigniting Rice's vampire tales with a new Lestat film...

...with Robert Downey Jr. circling the role of Lestat.

That's what Bloody-Disgusting's sources are telling them. Tom Cruise played the part in Interview with the Vampire and Stuart Townsend essayed the role in Queen of the Damned. Both bold choices. Downey is certainly another one if this turns out to be true. No word yet as to what story Universal is picking up with.

Downey recently wrapped Iron Man 2 and has Sherlock Holmes arriving later this year.

I'm a huge fan of Robert Downey Jr., but there is absolutely no chance of this happening.

I will eat my computer if Robert Downey Jr. actually ends up playing Lestat.

its really a matter of getting the right creative team on board. queen of the damned really sucked. interview was great.

I don't think I can see Robert Downey Jr Playing Lestat

Posted by: ike on August 14, 2009 at 20:08:54

the only person that should play Lestat is Tom Cruise. The only way they can make a good movie is to follow any of the books they may use as a source. Queen of the damned sucked big time because they tied to mix two books into one film. They got the wrong guy to be Lestat and they tried to make him more like Luis. I say don't do it if your gonna make it stupid or worse like Twilight....

This is great news! As far as production goes..
I really wanted to see most of the books adapted and thought they were to be after Interview with the Vampire. They have a very good franchise possibility in the Vampire Chronicles.
From the first audience reaction I witnessed with the Twilight trailers, I was baffled that series was getting so much attention, and the superior character driven Chronicles was left in the dark unused all this time. So I look forward to this and Dark Shadows, they are truly better material than teenage angst.

Couldn't agree more Fierce_Creature. Out with that Edward douche, in with Lestat.

Not quite sure about Downey Jr in the role mind you. Cruise really did own that role.

Think they should just start over, think that would be the best thing to do since it's been so long since Interview came out. Would love to see that. Think Downy Jr. is a fantastic actor, but not sure i can see him as lestat.

I am partially excited by this news. Anne's stories are amazing and outstrip the Twilight crap in story and character, along with amazing writing. But Robert Downey Jr. is too old to play Lestat. The character is supposed to look forever young (i.e. I believe Lestat was in his md 20's when taken). I would love to see the series rebooted. But I agree with what Anne said a few years ago--- the best way her novels could work would be as a television series---possibly a Showtime effort, especially with how ellicit her writing can get. IDK maybe im wrong. but a reboot would be a hell of alot better than starting with Body Thief---im pretty sure people would be lost (those that havent read the novels).

This could either be a great move, or a unmittigated disaster depending on who they get on board.
Downey as Lestat?...maybe once when he was a pup. But them I was, admitedly wrong about Cruise, and he was perfect.
As for where to go..let's just make like that awful, painful, waste of celuloid and time QotD never exisited and start with The Vampire Lestat, mainly because I HATE remakes, reboots, reimaginings, etc.
You can't improve on perfection, and Interview With The Vampire was a perfect vampire movie.

RObert is a Great actor, Being a huge fan of the series I do not see him as Lestat

IF they Choose to Make the Vampire Lestat, I could see him as Marius or Magnus

Wow! I'm not really too sure on Robert as Lestat. I was thinking that guy from Never Back Down, Sean Faris, should play Lestat. He eerily resembles like Tom Cruise.

Posted by: Macabre Madness on August 16, 2009 at 04:25:43

The Vampire Lestat was pretty much the same as Interview, only from Lestat's point of view instead of Louis. Making The Vampire Lestat into a film gives them the authority to start fresh, and pretty much from the beginning. Downey would never be cast as Lestat. There is nothing youthful or sly to his appearance.

I agree with JOsh.I think RDJ should play Magnus.I was wrong about Tom Cruise aswell, but it's been 15 years since 'Interview with the Vampire',so I don't think he should play Lestat again.I was thinking maybe James McAvoy to play louis, and an unknown french actor to play Lestat. Please also have Anne Rice add input in prodcing the movie, as it's her baby. Because QOTD was a pile of crap. The child actress from 'Let the right one in' should play Claudia. If they start from 'The vampire Lestat',they'll be able to do the reboot, as it will be from Lestat's point of view. And anyone who is a fan of the novels knews that Lestat will exagerate, making it ok for the changes from the first movie.

Posted by: The One on August 16, 2009 at 09:37:20

My bad,I ment to say knows that lestat will exagerate. Bloody hell i don't even know if i spelt exagerate right.Sod this I'm going for a pint.

I think that Gina Torres and Faran Tahir, should play those that must be kept.If not,Faran Tahir should play David Talbot, once he has aquired his new body at the end of 'the tale of the body thief'.

Can't Tom and Brad still play their roles? they haven't really aged much since the first film. They only way I could see Robert Downey Jr in these films is if he was David Talbot, but even then it's pushing it.
There was a guy in Sweeney Todd, can't remember his name, but the minute I saw him I thoyght he'd be right for Lestat (shame I'm not an agent I'd hound everyone until he got the part)and he can sing too, for that whole rock star phase in the second book. the main thing for me is to keep them in the settings of the novels and not to modernise them. But lets be honest, they'll get some bulls*** actors who can't act 'uase they're cheap, a shoddy production company for the same reasons and market the series towards the Twilight babies. I'd rather have the books than a dozen sh** films any day.

It could be interesting.(I hope)

IWTV was by far a better movie than that crap QOTD ,and that leather clad ****fest underworld. The books are amazing, and it would be nice to have a director find the correct balance between plot, action, and attention to detail.

I believe that Tom Cruise should star again. He is a great Lestat.

The Interview With The Vampire movie with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt should never be re-made; it was a masterpiece. Tom is still looking pretty good these days, but most actors choose not to redo characters they've already played more than 10 years ago. But reprising Tom would be the best choice in my opinion.

I think Robert Downey Jr. is an awesome choice to reboot the Lestat franchise. Tom Cruise is too wrapped up in the craziness of Scientology to take on a role such as Lestat again. He had to fight off them gay rumnors after he played that role.

Tom Cruise should return has Lestat.
