EXCL: David Twohy on Continuing the Riddick Saga

Source:Edward Douglas
August 1, 2009

Earlier today, ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to sit down with director David Twohy to talk about his upcoming psychological thriller A Perfect Getaway and during our interview, we got around to talking about Twohy's dark sci-fi franchise, which seemingly petered out with 2005's The Chronicles of Riddick, but in fact, Twohy has been in regular communication with the movie's star, Vin Diesel, on how to continue the series.

"I've sketched out two ideas for the next installment," he told us during the exclusive interview. "Vin and I have decided on one approach of those two, and there's some interest at the studio level but it would be as a PG-13 film, and we don't want to do that anymore. That's one of the concessions we thought we made with 'Riddick' that we shouldn't have made. We also spent too much money and we were too ambitions, so yes, if we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, hopefully again the same way that 'Pitch Black' was, and we'll spend less money doing it. We're just trying to figure out how much less we can do it for, because I don't think Vin is going to work for scale again."

"The third movie would be more modestly-scaled and it would probably feel more like 'Pitch Black' then 'Chronicles'," he continued. "It will always be Riddick-centric. If the question is whether it will be more like the first one than the second one, the difference is that yeah, you can sell it on its creatures and say 'This is a creature fest and we're going to go out as us vs. the creatures' but that's like a lot of different movies. However, the hallmark of a good movie, and I think 'Pitch Black' is a good movie, is that even if you took the creatures out of the picture, you'd still have some pretty interesting character dynamics going on within that group, and it's almost like you can tell the same story without the creature or substitute some other external pressure on the group, because there were internal pressures as well that were interesting. So was it really a creature feature? It had the hallmarks of it, the trappings of a creature movie, but it also had pretty good characters."

Even though Twohy and Diesel may be seriously talking about the way to move forward with the Riddick franchise, that's not the only thing on Twohy's plate, as he admits to always having a few original scripts in some stage of development to tackle after he finishes whatever movie he's working on. The one he seems most interested in doing is something called Crying Havoc, which will be produced by Ridley Scott. Twohy filled us in on the premise: "It is about an FBI Agent who uses technology to track a spy around the world, only to learn that the spy is more demon than human, and that demon leads him into the lower circles of Hell, psychologically speaking. That's a cool one, and it hopefully has the same visual prowess of a movie like 'Constantine' but a hopefully more coherent script. That's in the works and that may be next."

Look for our full interview with Mr. Twohy sometime next week before A Perfect Getaway opens on August 7.

I bought Pitch Black during the HD DVD fire sales and I never watched it all the way through. I think it's really slow - not boring - but flirts with boredom.

As for Chronicles of Rid**** - that was poo, full stop.

I'm not sure. It'd have to be a kick-arse trailer for me to want to see Rid**** 3.

Oh, COME ON! I wasn't using **** as an insult or anything.

That's just ridiculous...

Sounds like you have the attention span of a 2 year old Calum. Pitch Black was awesome, and Chronicles was even better. Really looking forwards to this.

Yeah, I absolutely loved both of the first two films. The second one's biggest problem was that you could feel the studio pressure to tone it down. It would have been a far superior film if the grittiness of the first was left stand as originally intended.

I wonder when we'll see the first trailer?

It's about time!

S hit idea - S hit series

In my opinion, if you took the creatures out of Pitch Black you would NOT have a interesting film. This guy is a cornhole. The biggest reason Chronicles wasnt as good (still a good flick tho) was the lack of monsters. Vin Diesel cannot act, but he makes a good action scene.

I thought Pitch Black was an OK horror flick. I don't know if it would stand on it's own without the creature fest going on, but I did like the characters. Chronicles of Rid**** was an awesome movie. Vin Diesel might not be the best actor, but Rid**** is the perfect character for him. If they made a movie, with a huge space scale, maybe some creatures, and a ton of bad-arse action scenes, I think it would do well, even if it lacked a great script. Though, I'd love to see something that really rocked. Maybe it could pick up right after the 2nd movie, with Rid**** on his way to the underverse to save his friend, Hercules style.

Personally, for me, Chronicles of Rid**** F@#kin kicks ass - i could watch that movie 3 times back to back and not get bored - it's an awesome action flick.

Please make Escape From Butcher Bay into a movie. That is easily in my top five favorite video games of all time.

Chronicle wasn't as good because they did too much with the money they had to play with. The first was done in a style that was unique, wasn't built on special effects like the second one. They need to go back to the style of the first, and expand a little on it.

Posted by: ridd.ick on August 2, 2009 at 23:03:27

pitch black and chronicles of ridd.ick need a third movie. vin diesel is one of my favorite actor and im waiting for a third one. vin diesel do it best for action movies, he will make xXx 3, ridd.ick 3, fast and furious 5 as well... and whellman :D

i knew that ridd.ick 3 will come one day. because they made a new game of rid****. why made a new game without making a movie?

Posted by: Jaguar on August 2, 2009 at 23:41:22

I thuroughly enjoyed the first two films. I think a third movie that's focused, well scripted and rated 'R' would be awesome with Vin Diesel returning as his best character.
I'd like to see Riddi.ck unleashed.
And a nice, heavy, angry violent soundtrack, too boot.

I have been trying to follow up on a third installment for a while now, and not too long ago, Diesle said he wanted the next movie(s) to be about Rid****'s venture into the Necromonger's world. he said he had some story ideas about what to do with the character. Not only that but the CoR video game won all sorts of awards and was a huge hit. Vin diesel won't let us down with this, even though some of his movies have sucked.

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

Can't wait for it myself. Hopefully he'll consider doing an AvP revival film, using his old "Alien 3" script as a guide, and maybe bring back the Colonial Marines.

Pitch black was pretty bad. I liked ridd.ick as a character but the movie was way too slow and the creatures looked awful. Chronicles was way better. It was an action movie through and through which plays to diesels strengths and that is where they should pick up. All this talk of taking it in a cheaper ,grittier direction closer to pitch black gives me very little hope for this 3rd installment. Cheap and gritty relies entirely on acting, story and character development. Diesel is a B actor at best, I have zero faith in modern sci-fi writers and character development..... I just don't think the character can grow any further..

A would probably see a second installment of chronicles in theatre. A rehashing of pitch black I probably wouldn't RENT.

Ah, but Chronicles itself had a kickass TEASER trailer and we know how that turned out. Just make it more bare-bones like Pitch Black was and you'll have my vote. And forget silly words like Necromonger and Underverse and you'll get everybody else's vote. Go back to square one. You don't have to make a direct sequel to Chronicles of Rid****. Tell us what he's been doing in one line of dialogue, like so:

--"What have you been doing all this time, Rid****?"

-"Hunting."

--"People?"

-"Hunting EVERYTHING. It's more fun that way."

Simple, aint it!

They should make a movie of " GOD OF WAR" starring Vin Gasoline err..I mean Diesel.

ATTENTION! GOD OF WAR!

that may be the worst joke ever.

Personally I think Rid**** should go to where the Lord Marshall went when he got his powers, it sounds like a dark universe that would be right up Rid****'s alley for coolness, and he may come back with the powers, which was one of the cool things in the movie

Wait, you can't say "Ridd i c k" on the comment board? WTF!!!

Either way, yes, I say we need some more Ridd i c k in our lives. I didn't hate Chronicles, but Pitch Black was better in my opinion.

I haven't played the videogames yet, so I can't say wether or not to turn one of them into the next movie. But I need to see another kick@ss Ridd i c k move. ;-)

movie**

You have to watch the directors cut of both Pitch Black and Chronicles of Rid****, they left alot on the floor and are missing some good scenes. But Both movies are posibly the best sci-fi to this date. C.O.R. is one of those movies you can watch over and over, I look forward to the next 2 movies they want to make.
