Confirmed Exclusive: Resident Evil 4 Arriving in Late 2010

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
July 2, 2009

Update: We have just received confirmation - the release date is true!

In spite of what any of the talent involved in Resident Evil: Extinction told us during the press tour (mostly, "this is the final chapter"), the film left the door wide - and we mean WIDE open - for a fourth installment.

Late last year, Paul W.S. Anderson revealed he was indeed writing another film. Capcom was getting involved. Everyone, as he said, was "excited." Well, we've just learned from a studio insider that Sony is looking to get Resident Evil: Afterlife into theaters by September 17, 2010. That's according to an internal memo circulating through the offices there.

Will Anderson direct? Unsure. Will Milla Jovovich be back? I think it would be safe to say yes considering the last entry ended on - SPOILER ALERT - Alice clones getting ready to seek revenge on the Umbrella Corporation which was holed up in Tokyo.

More info as it comes in!

I really think they didn't follow the story of the game's cause they probably thought people would enjoy a new story about RE without having to play the game. the movies weren't bad but alot of people expected it to be alot closer to the really RE in-game story which everyone loved dearly.

I love how you Resident Evil nerds get so frustrated and upset about the Resident Evil Movies. One thing why they **** would you want to see a movie when you already know the outcome there is no use in even seeing, go play the damn game again. That's the difference between movie goers and gamers, movie goers actually look for the plot and style of the movie, gamers want to have fun playing the game and try to understand the storyline! If you want to ****ing reboot the RE movies make a damn script and send it in to a director.
One thing Resident Evil shouldn't even be a horror game when its not even scary. Survival horror my ass you got guns that somehow you find everytime. Silent Hill is survival horror. I loved the movies and I like the games. Leave the movie alone and don't watch it damn gamers!

Honestly, fans of the games have EVERY right to complain. And no, calling me a nerd or a fanboy won't make you look better. I am neither of those anyway, I just ENJOY the games MORE. You yourself are being a fanboy of the movie, so ****off. Let's start. So my first question is why does this series have the name "Resident Evil" on it? Source material cannot be argued with. If your going to make a movie adaptation of a video game, then do it right. If that means do it EXACTLY how the games were, then do it. The games have better storylines anyway, and no this would not be predictable to all of you idiots saying that, because by now, most of the people who see these movies have never played the game, therefore that means that they wouldn't have a ****ing clue about the storlines from the games, so it wouldn't predictable. I'm sure most of the people who went and saw the first movie were fans of the game. They were most likely dissapointed. Why would we want to see a movie we already know the outcome to? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. That's like saying "Why would anyone want to go see Titanic". That movie was re-made THREE TIMES, and people went and saw it every single time, the ending was the same, there was just some made up BS in the middle. But with a game to movie adaptation, you can't have made up BS. There is no arguing with the source material. Why do you think that Doom (the movie)sucked? Because it didn't stick to the source material. Silent Hill did well becaue it stuck to the source material, although I don't think that Henry Mason was the main character in the movie. It's not a Resident Evil movie because if it were, elements and characters from the game would be used. In fact, the only thing Resident Evil about this movie was Umbrella and zombies. There is so much irrelevant bull**** in these movies it's safe to say that they should just rename the movie something else. You have to play the games to see where I am coming from. If you do, you will see a lot of differences. One is that the character Alice, doesn't even exist in the games. You'll also notice that the characters in the games are far more interesting than the one's in the movies. The Jill from the game is much better than the one from the movie. Same thing with Claire, Wesker, and Carlos. These are some of the most misinterpreted characters I have ever seen in any movie. In fact, the Jill from the movie is the only one that looks like her game counter part. Wesker is muscular and crazy in the game. Not in the movie. He's fat and has a receeding hair line. What the hell? Claire is kind of arrogant in the movies (for some unknown reason). Not in the games, she is a completely oblivious to the situation and acts like this innocent little girl in the game. Not to mention she has RED hair in the game, not in the movie though. Carlos is an older, wiser character in the movie. He looks like he is in his 40's in the movie. He is in his 20's in the game and is wreckless. What people don't understand is that if you are fan of a game series, and it just happens to be one of the greatest video game series of all time, and you hear that they are going to make a movie BASED on the game, that person is going to get excited. They are going to expect the movie to have the great storyline that the game had. But when they totally **** up everything, of course there are going to be some pissed off people.
Just so you know, I was literally forced by my friends to go see Extinction, and I only saw the other movies because they show them WAY TOO MUCH on the ScyFy channel. Like three times a month. So that would explain why I know so much about the movies. Other differences from the game (once again, the source material, which is supposed to be the basis of the movie) is that Nemesis is literally a ***** in the movie. In the game, he doesn't give two ****s about ANYTHING and he is a heartless monster with a rocket launcher. Who's stupid ass idea was it to have Alice get in a fist fight AND WIN against Nemesis? Huge misinterpretation, mostly because she should've gotten her assed kicked. So, flame me, I don't give a ****.

I agree with Anthony. The whole "Why would you want to go see a movie you already know the outcome to" argument is a tad bit stupid. That would be like saying "Why would anyone want to go see a Harry Potter movie if they've already read the books?". Doesn't make sense at all, they've made, what, 7 movie adaptations of that book and people STILL go see it, most of whom have read the book. That argument is void. I saw the movies and got interested in the games. I've played all of the games from the main series and I will admit, the games are better. They have better characters, way more interesting storylines, better action (especially 4 & 5), but most of all, it's horrifying, which is what Resident Evil is supposed to be.....a horror/survival game. See, this movie can't have the name Resident Evil on it, because it's more of an action film than a horror film. Resident Evil is supposed to be terrifying, not action. I think Anthony pretty much coverred everything, but I am going to emphasize on his statements.
1. If you are going to make a film adaptation of a game, then do it exactly like the game, especially if the game ALREADY has a great storyline and interesting characters in it. That would make kick ass movie.
2. Paul W.S. Anderson sucks.
3. The characters from the games that are actually in the movies are misinterpreted and just not very well done. Sienna Guillory as Jill was perfect, but Jill was a total wuss in the films. She is a bad ass in the games. What Alice is should be what Jill is, with more of an emotional side and a false sense of security. Ali Larter is hot, but she looks nothing like Claire. I mean, for Gods sake, she could have at least dyed her hair red to make herself look SOMEWHAT like Claire. Carlos, as Anthony said, is too old in the film adaptation. He is in his 20's in the game. Not to mention Oded Fehr looks nothing like him, because Carlos has long hair and is in his 20's. Wesker.....what can you say really. Jason O'Mara did a ****ty job, seriously. In fact, before they hired these actors, they probably should have studied the game first. Then they probably would've have done the series right the first time. First of all, Wesker is an arrogant, genocidal, psychopathic madman in the games. He even has this upper-class American accent. He is ripped and he practically kicks your ass in every game you encounter him in. He doesn't run Umbrella in the games, he works for them. Here is the thing though: He doesn't give a **** about Umbrella. He works for his own personal gain, nothing else. I swear to God, if Wesker is a wuss and can't fight in this next film then I will just be disgusted. In fact, I'm not even going to see the movie so screw it. And Nemesis......to hell with it.
4. Alice does not exist in the games and therefore never should have been in the movies. It's based ON THE GAME, so why is a character that is NOT IN THE GAME the main character in the movie?
5. Where are the main male characters from the game, that play a bigger role than any other characters? Chris and Leon. Claire is already in the movie, so why the hell is Chris not? He is a more important character. He isn't dead in the movies like Leon for some unknown reason. First of all, why would you kill off the most POPULAR character from the game in the movies? That's almost on the edge of mental retardation. And secondly, why did it say he was killed while on duty with his partner Jill Valentine? They never were partners, in fact they haven't even met one another in the games. Confusing, isn't it? Mostly because CHRIS is Jills partner in the games.
If these were Resident Evil movies, they would horror movies, Alice wouldn't exist, the characters from the games would be well played out and more of them would be in the movie, the storyline would follow the games, and there would be more ZOMBIES. There are barely any zombies in these movies. This isn't a video game movie because it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAMES, THEREFORE, WHY DOES IT HAVE THE NAME OF THE GAME?

Posted by: Anthony on July 17, 2009 at 11:25:45

Well that's kinda of a cliffhangar which left the viewers hanging after Alice clones herself to exact revenge on the Umbrella Corp. In my opinion Milla Jovovich should return no one plays Alice as MIlla does. Well just have to wait and see.

Posted by: Bailey on July 19, 2009 at 15:21:21

the only thing that would get me to see this film is Jensen Ackles as leon kennedy.

there are so many rumors going on it is hard to tell but he is in talks anyone whow atched Supernatural can see why Dean Winchester = Leon Kennedy.

i for one will see the movies because of the zombies and i guess the fighting is kinda cool... but the movies just seem way too bionic woman for my taste. It is no Shaun of the Dead.

but from the looks of it they are getting a new director and apparently they are listening to a lot of fans of the game who are literally screaming that they make the movies scarier and a bit closer to reality.

anyway, If jensen is in it here are my 6$ to go see it at NCG, otherwise... i can wait for DVD release.

good luck people working on the RE4 project. make it scary!!!!!!! I'll be almost 18 when this 4th movie comes to the US theaters and i want to cry because i was scared so badly!!!!

Posted by: Bailey on July 19, 2009 at 15:51:53

and one quick response to the dimbo about the whole why in the world would people go see the movies if they already know the outcome?

well... you sya you like silent hill.

you say you love the games.

okay... did you play the game before or after you saw the movie? if you answer BEFORE then you should see my point. you get excited because it is something you love.

That is why so many Harry potter readers go to the movies because they love harry potter so they get excited every two or three years when they see the new trailer only to be impressed or disappointed.

I know that is why i go see the resi movies because it is my game being put on the big screen. What you might not seem to understand is that because us resi game fans get so frickin' disappointed with the movies because they are throwing out some sloppy story with misinterpreted characters, very little scares, very little truth to the actual story, various cliches, and then slapping the title of Resident Evil on it.

Imagine if the Silent Hill Movie threw in random irrelevant crap that completely changed the entire story, as a fan of the game, you'd be pissed!

so please understand our lack of faith in the movies.

and one more clarification. You must not have played the RE games because had you, you would know that all of the games except 5, i'll give you that 5 is not survival horror, are survival horror. The first one mainly has you running back and forth trying to solve puzzles all the while being stalked by a zombie that you cannot kill because of grenades and you have to conserve ammo, espeacially shotgun because once those crimson heads and hunters start rearing their heads you best be a good runner/ dodger or you better have plenty of shotgun ammo. so if that is not survival horror then someone needs to re-write the definition.

*one more thing:
movies, because of your matrix ripping off ways, they are polluting the resident evil games. am i wrong? well tell when has Leon or any human being been able to dodge high intensity lazers that were um... previously seen in the films? everyone is becoming superhuman and it quite frankley just is not fun anymore.

Posted by: lisa on July 19, 2009 at 21:39:13

everyone who is hatting on the resident evil movies needs to stfu, i think its a great idea that there making a part 4 because the ending of the 3rd movie you know its not going to end there, maybe the 4th movie will be the last one, but seriesly guys the resident evil movies are wayyyy better than those other zombie movies that sucked ass, well this is my opinion but resident evil is the best zombie movies, oh yeah there games are awesome too sooooooooo STFU ;]

Posted by: fastino kreutz on July 20, 2009 at 06:23:54

OMFG.. i thought was Milla not ganna be able to making the 4th film..??? but that was not true..hahaha woohoo.. u go girl.

THESE MOVIES LICK BAWLZ GET RID OF PAUL ANDERSON AND A GOOD RESIDENT EVIL MOVIE WILL COME!!! ALSO GET RID OF JOVOVICH OR HOWEVER U SPELL HER STUPID NAME

Posted by: The Weesel on July 29, 2009 at 04:13:28

I played the original video game. It was good, but the story in itself wasn't very interesting. All video game or book adaptations are always changed for screenplay purposes Read: To Turn a Profit.

And hate it or not, the RE series has become very successful at making a profit. So for the benefit of the franchise itself, anything that promotes people who see the movie towards going out and buying the video games makes everyone win, because it's a new story they can get into for the puzzle and horror aspects.

I don't see why we can't have it both ways.

Posted by: da man on July 29, 2009 at 21:32:20

i wish that they would make a oridganel resident evil game i mean sheesh like

movies sucked. just play the games. im done hoping after the third one blew.

Posted by: Swedish ass on August 2, 2009 at 14:42:05

Stop ****ing complaining! The movies are good, the don't need a ****i'n "reboot". Milla is great and I'd love to see her again in Afterlife. If so many people hate that the movies are not so much like the games then ****'em. Instead of rebooting the whole ****, why note make a new series wich is alot like the games but in Animation.. That would work for me. I don't need it to be like a stupid reality film. God!

Posted by: Bob on August 9, 2009 at 15:36:51

I'm really excited for this movie! Check out my fan poster!

Love these films (and the games)- much better than the very dispointing Res Evil degeneration - great to see a 4th being made :)

Posted by: Ethan on August 10, 2009 at 13:18:54

"In spite of what any of the talent involved in..."

Talent? What talent have you seen in the three last movies?

Maybe they had some good actors (not performances) and good composers, but if they keep writing these ****ty scripts, nothing can be good in the RE movies. Stop thinking just in the money. With the same budget you could make something a lot better. Not to mention that you're making the RE games look like ****... (shame on Capcom for letting them do so...).

Anyway, as long as some people keep consuming this kind of greatly developed movies...

Posted by: residentevilrocks2 on August 11, 2009 at 19:32:49

i love all da movies they are wonderful and alice has to come back in the new movie due the ending of extintion

The following was posted by: Orlando:

"Thats not surprising. The way they ended the last one, they would have needed to do something with it, I mean why not. I for one, enjoyed the RE movie series. Its always a treat to see a hottie kick some zombie ass. And I love Milla as that hottie, I think even when the RE movies do end, she definatly needs to find more roles to play like Alice. And since they only pulled out a few charcters from the actual games, why not just make a project Alice video game. Atleast she'd really be part of the RE family. Hell and I think that would make a great RE game."

Im sorry, but your obviously not a real Resident Evil fan. Its because of people like you that we are still seeing these P.O.S films. In my opinion there is no Resident Evil film except Degeneration. To people who have never played the game series, these movies made it seem like garbage; and by the way, Project Alice video game?!!!!!?!!!! SHUT THE **** UP!!!!!! That would be the lamest game ever and be a complete slap in the face to the original creators of the game series. Alice can go to hell. I already have a good plot idea for a good trilogy and it would be like the game. No more ALICE!!!!! And Orlando, do your self a favor and pick up resident evil 1 2 and 3 for the playstation and try to learn something!!!!!

Posted by: Re Fan on August 11, 2009 at 19:44:56

You people who defend these stupid movies are complete retards!!!!!! The games story is scary, exciting and classic why is it so hard to take make the games in to movies. Calling these films "resident evil" is a slap in the face to everyone who worked on the games and everyone who loves the game series. You stupid people defending the movies and saying there good are blind. Ok OK OK Ill give you this the first movie was ok at most it was entertaining, but what the ****... Nemises? Nemises?!!! In the game he scared the **** out of me like a million times. In the game hes a soft ***** !!! and it pisses me off that some of the games are begining to go down this path because of the movies fame. The first wii versions nemises was a giant douche bag too. So these movies arent just screwing up my day there also screwing with some of the games. We need a great protest!!!!! I swear to god, if I ever have the money, I will make sure there is a trilogy made that backs the game series. These are my favorite games. Stop ****ing with them!!!!!!
