Cloverfield Director Talks Let the Right One In

June 29, 2009

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves talked to the Los Angeles Times about his upcoming English remake of the award-winning Swedish horror film Let the Right On In, which was based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's original novel.

"I was just hooked," Reeves told the newspaper. "I was so taken with the story and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror."

Reeves has finished a second draft of the script, now titled Let Me In. The film will be set in Reagan-era Colorado. He is scouting locations, looking to maintain the original story's chilly, snow-swept environs.

The production is also looking for the two leads, which Reeves vows will not be aged-up to make the film more of a smoldering Twilight-style romance. The story centers around Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy who finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.

Ugh. I usually don't care when a remake is announced, but this one just makes me ill. No reason whatsoever to remake it except to do it in English.

That LET ME IN sucks! I really don't want a remake of this film. But if they're going to do it anyway, just use the original title.

I hate to do the anti-remake cynic thing, but why remake a movie that hasn't even been released everywhere yet? What is it with Hollywood's phobia of subtitles? LEARN TO READ!!!

Even if it's nothing we have to express ourselves about all these pointless remakes, the simple idea of a LTROI remake is truly a shame, nothing touches the one and only version that Thomas Alfredson made, it's almost xenophobia....wait it actually is ! And that "this will be no Twilight" is so kiss-ass !

Usually I don't care for remakes and I'm willing to give them a chance. But 'Let The Right One In' is SO out of America's league. You shouldn't mess with horror masterpieces. There's a reason why films like 'The Shining' and 'The Exorcist' haven't been remade, TV versions put aside.

Shouldn't Matt Reeves be channeling his creative energies into an original idea, instead of going through the motions of trying to remake a film that is very near a masterpiece and that no one wants to see remade?

LET ME IN... could this idea be more insulting to Americans?

No, it couldn't.

Why?!?! This film is great as it is. If people want to see it, they will watch the original. Can't anyone think of something new? Are they running out of classicel remakes that they have to remake new international movies?

Just another movie that's going on my "to watch NOT"-list.

this film is a modern-day classic already, and all i have to say about the remake(since i can't stop it) is this: LEAVE THE TITLE THE SAME!!! if u change it to 'let me in', that totally changes wut ppl think about this vampire movie b4 they know wut it's about.... just wish 'let the right one in' could get a proper nationwide showing, like 'crouching tiger' did....horror fans would eat this **** UP!!!! no lie!!! but hollywood is too lame to try to distribute a foreign horror movie like that...such a f ckin shame

Maybe they can do a Burger King tie-in and have a bunch of product placement. Then they can sell posters and action figures and lunch boxes... KILL ME NOW!!! I will not see this. The original is great, no reason for this.

Yeah this is another example of cultural imperialism and they keep on doing remakes again and again 'till we accept them with a great smile !
American film makers are still acting like it is better to see a movie only with american actors, this is nothing but an insult to the great movie made by Alfredson ! Reeves doesn't give a damn about LTROI, he just saw the opportunity to cash in on Vampire movie success and the best way to succeed is remaking an already praised movie ! I will not see this at all just like i did not see Quarantine.
And of course, Lina Leandersson and Kare Hedebrant's performance are simply untouchable !

I didn't like Quarantine. IMO, you're not missing much there...

i understand the idea of thinking here...here is a foreign movie that was well recieved that didnt get the big audience that it should have in america..lets remake it american style so that more people will see it...but i dont agree with it...for the people that dont like subtitles..i used to hate them..when i was a kid..these days anybody that says its hard to watch them is an idiot..yes its wierd for the first 10 min but after some time its like watching a normal movie imo..i dont think this needs to be remade..im not gonna go see it because the original was great..and i dont need to see a stupid american remake to understand how good this movie was..

Posted by: Eo on July 1, 2009 at 00:12:46

tommarow is my day off so i sat up with my gf watching a torrant of dead snow..a movie in subtitles..i was drunk and still read it and enjoyed it..hating subtitle movies these days means you dont want to put the time into watching it...if you dont like it go see transformers 2..that stupid ass movie(which unfortunatly i saw) will keep you ocupied without trying to follow a story

The movie wasn't that bad but I read the book. It's even more horrorfying as Eli has a lot more secrets in it...
