Shock Video: Raimi & Cast on Drag Me to Hell

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor

In our continuing coverage of this summer's first big horror offering that's out to compete with the blockbusters, I recently sat down with the gang behind Drag Me to Hell, opening in theaters on May 29th. Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver and director and co-writer Sam Raimi met with me in Beverly Hills to discuss the highlights of making this madcap, definitively "Raimi-esque" supernatural-thriller. For more, you can visit this spot for clips, trailers and photos.

Caught a screening on Tuesday. This flick is incredible. INCREDIBLE. Once you see it, the PG-13 whiners will be silenced because there is no good reason for this to be an R rated movie. In fact, it puts 80% of the R-Rated horror movies to come out in the past few years to absolute shame. There is no excessive gore or violence, but there is a ton of gross-out grue and ickiness, and it's used to superb effect. The tension is thick, and there are many well-executed set pieces and scares. It's one of the most original horror movies at least since Wes Craven's New Nightmare in '94, and Alison Lohman gives a kick-ass lead performance. Rami's got a classic on his hands. People will be watching and talking about this movie for YEARS. This is how it's done, folks. Sit home and cross your hands and stamp your feet over a PG-13, or go in with an open mind and see a truly great scary movie.

I think it should be noted that "Drag Me to Hell" is a scene by scene recreation of a British film released in 1957 by Columbia Pictures called "Curse of the Demon." It was previously released in England as "Night of the Demon." The significant plot points are:

• a curse is unknowingly handed to the victim
• the victim has 3 days until he is destroyed by a demon, during which the victim is plagued by horrifying visions
• the only way to undo the curse is to hand it off to another person (or the person who cursed them, as it turns out) without their knowledge
• the final act happens at a train station

I like the movie Sam Raimi has made. It was very entertaining. But he should be more open about where his source material comes from. "Curse of the Demon" is a great movie. "Drag Me to Hell" is a fun imitation of that movie. That's all.

I totally agree with the comment made by Tim Ramstad.

As well as both films ending at a train station both films start with someone being taken by the demon.

Night of the Demon is one of my favourite films and I enjoyed Drag me to Hell too. I'm suprised that it has not been mentioned anywhere 'official' that Drag Me to Hell is a remake.

I love Curse of the Demon! After seeing the trailer for Drag Me to Hell, I wondered if this is an homage to the older film. The shadow of the demon looks a lot like the curse demon. I've always thought that this film should be remade. I can't wait to see Drag Me.
I don't think Raime should tell everything about his inspiration, it's fun to find out for ourselves.

just to settle on what is being ripped off: Curse of the Demon was Jacques Tourneur's filming of the classic M.R. James horror story, The Casting of the Runes. Also note that the ending of Drag me to Hell with the train was a direct homage to Curse of the Demon, a film Sam Raimi certainly knows well.
