Dark Shadows in 2010
Source:TimBurton.jp, 'James'
April 14, 2009
A Japanese press schedule published by Warner Bros., which you can see in its entirety here, has the Johnny Depp-produced Dark Shadows feature film positioned for a winter 2010 release. That's just overseas, but it gives you a good idea of when the studio might have it ready for us here in the States.
Last month, Sam Sarkar of Depp's Infinitum-Nihil hinted that big announcements were regarding the project were coming soon. He would not confirm or deny that Tim Burton, who's at work on Alice in Wonderland, was going to direct. Depp will most definitely start as Shadows' Barnabas Collins.

sure a bunch of young bucks who don't know about this will hate on it but this should and could be right on... this was way ahead of its time when shadows was originally in production and no one will do it justice like Burton would

Sounds promising. Keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed for this one!

Don't let Burton get is grubby hands on this. I really don't want his take on anything, because it's nothing new. Depp will just play the same guy he plays in all Burton movies.
Lemme guess: That Carter lady will be in this too!

The johnnydeppnews.com website which btw today referenced this shocktillyoudrop website, said that principal photography was scheduled to be done at Pinewood Studios, England. Well the show always claimed that there was a Collins family branch living in England at one time.

I just hope they keep the movie as oldschool as the show was. Thank You Gerard for posting that information.

You are welcome Ryan. I don't know what Tim Burton or the screenwriter has in mind but I am also hoping that it keeps the spirit of the original show. That being said I have no idea how this will be played out but it is certainly an exciting time.

Hey gerard I have a question it's been so long since Ive seen the series especially the last episode I forgot how do they kill Barnabas? I could have sworn barnabis father locks him away in a coffin and chains it up. Do you remember??? thanks.
Posted by: gerard on April 15, 2009 at 15:20:59
It gets a bit complicated. The show did not end in the present time. If my memory serves me correctly it ended in 1841 Parallel time so the Barnanas character exists in the present time still (unchained). What you are referring to is when in 1797 Barnabas was chained in his coffin by his father only to be released in 1967 by Willie Loomis. Hope this helps but DS went back and forth in time and into parallel universes which does not make the story lines any easier.

I just reread my last post and I don't think I was too clear sorry about that Ryan. The show ended in April 1971. Jonathan Frid (Barnabas) was playing a different character, Bramwell Collins in the 1841 Parallel Time storyline when the show went off the air. Bramwell Collins was the son of Barnabas and Josette Collins in the parallel time world. Don't ask. lol Accordingly, when ABC essentially cancelled DS, you have to assume the Barnabas character still lived on as he was not killed off. btw the 1991 Dark Shadows revival complete series can be found here at:

It's true that Barnabas was never really killed off in the TV series, but not so in the films.
It was in House of Dark Shadows that Barnabas had the wooden stake driven through his heart, if memory serves me correctly, by WILLIE LOOMIS! This was also after Barnabas had all but destroyed the Collins family & friends: Carolyn, Roger, Julia, & Professor Stokes.
I have this film on VHS but I don't like it as good as the original. The series had heart, as in Barnabas the RELUCTANT vampire, trying to find a cure. The theatrical film had Barnabas as simply ruthless & cold. It drew upon parallels to the series but didn't have the same charm. It also didn't have the famous theme music either.
As far as I know, this is yet to be released on DVD, but I'll probably still buy it anyway when they do.

hey gerard thanks again! and for hotzodpockets he doesn't die in the end of house of dark shadows. He turns into a bat and flies off. The second movie was utter crap. I didn't think they would abandoned barnabas after the ending of the first one.

"He turns into a bat and flies off."
I think I remember that now that you mention it, but I most likely took that like a gimmick. You know, 'wink wink, nudge nudge' kind of thing. Anyway, how could he survive when it plainly showed the stake driven through his heart, & I believe that guy playing Peter Bradford pushed it even further, didn't he? When he was released from his spell?
It's been some time since I watched this. I may drag it out of storage. As for the 2nd film, Night of dark Shadows, that was obviously a 'Quentin' vehicle, but like with Barnabas, it lacked the charm of the series. And Angelique with Quentin INSTEAD of Barnabas?!
Gimme a break!
Posted by: Ryan on April 15, 2009 at 18:29:16
sorry hotzodpocket I completely did not pay attention to your first sentence. Yeah he never really dies he just vanishes out of nowhere although it is clear he morphs into a bat at the end still we have no clear understanding if he is just going into hiding or maybe just dies from the stab wounds eventually.
Posted by: Ryan on April 15, 2009 at 18:54:58
Yes I do agree by a long shot Barnabas was dead but at the same time its cool they just out of know where made him morph into a bat and dissapear. I like that they give that eary feeling of him still roaming around the old collins mansion.

Hey Ryan and hotzodpockets. I think Jeff Clark did in Barnabas at the end after Willie was killed by Barnabas-Willie caught that arrow in the back by Clark and then Barnabas finished Willie off? It's been along time since I seen the movie's ending but I think we are getting there. The bat flying at the end of the credits implied that there was going to be a sequel with the Barnabas character but that was not meant to be as he was afraid of being typecasted. As far as the Night of DS they cut something like 45 minutes from the final version and that is why the movie did not make sense at times and was not as good as HODS in my opinion. The DVDs for this movie should be released when the new DS movie comes out. The Dark Shadows annual convention is in Newark, New Jersey this year with the man himself Jonathan Frid in attendance.
Posted by: Ryan on April 15, 2009 at 20:18:22
How cool would it be if the man himself jonathan frid made an appearance in the new film!
Posted by: gerard on April 15, 2009 at 21:09:26
Ryan that would be amazing. Talking about coming full circle. Depp adored and imitated Frid when he was a young kid watching Frid's portrayal of Barnabas and now Depp is Barnabas. Wow.

"How cool would it be if the man himself jonathan frid made an appearance in the new film!"
How OLD is Frid now anyway? I was wondering if he was even still alive!
Hey, here's an original idea. THIS time Frid can play the 200 year old vampire WITHOUT the aged makeup. ;)

neh
Posted by: Ryan on April 16, 2009 at 00:28:43
lol yeah your right hotzodpockets but he looks pretty good for his age I would actually like to see him play a vampire in this movie well that is even if they consider putting him in it or at least play barnabas father.

I'm in the process of watching House of Dark Shadows on VHS. I made some errors. First, there IS a snippet of the theme music when the opening credits start, but there's NOT the usual opening, i.e., the crashing waves on the rocks. I've also heard some of the other TV music, including Josette's theme.
Other than that, so far it's pretty much like I remembered it. On one hand, it interests me now, but I can see where the 'dull' color pallet of the film sorta makes it dreary, whereas the TV show usually had vibrant colors.
Right now I'm up to the point (should I say spoilers?) where Carolyn is about to be done in by Stokes. I'll have to come back later for the rest.

It's getting harder to find this article. lol
Jonathan Frid. God bless the man. He has his own website www.jonathanfrid.com
I can't wait to see HODS on DVD. I am spoiled now. It's hard to watch anything on VHS. All those colors and sharpness should be on the DVD release.
fyi The convention info is at www.darkshadowsfestival.com and current news can be found at www.collinwood.net in its blog/news feature.

I hope they do it right. I think Depp playing Barnabas is great! I like Tim Burton but Dark Shadows should not have his signature touch like all of his other films. Keep it straight like the original and the revival series in the 90's.
