How Do Two Writers Remake Poltergeist?

Source:The Wrap
March 23, 2009

The Wrap's Michael Adams got some one-on-two time with writers Stiles White and Juliet Snowden, the pair who penned this weekend's box office hit Knowing. Adams got them to talk a bit about two forthcoming remakes: Poltergeist and The Birds.

"Poltergeist was a real snapshot of the American family in the year that it came out - 1982 - and I think what we would do with the reimaging of it is, 'What is the American family up to today?'" says White of their take on the Tobe Hooper film.

Snowden offers her thoughts on re-doing The Birds: "With something like The Birds, you can take the concept of birds gone crazy and put that onto a myriad of situations. Whereas with some other remakes, we really felt that those were movies that we really couldn't think of new scenes or ideas. Some of these remakes are already-perfect movies. We're not saying The Birds isn't a perfect movie - but when we heard about that we had, instantly, a lot of ideas about what we could do [in the present] and how we would change it."

Vadim Perelman is in line to helm Poltergeist for MGM. The Birds, meanwhile, is set up at Platinum Dunes.

Knowing was AWFUL!

I thought Knowing was pretty good until the end. The disaster scenes were good though.

The Birds Remake=Go for it! I say bring a great a classic back to the mainstream audience.
Poltergeist Remake=Why bring crap back to life? Those movies sucked and no one in them ended up big an famous, so, again, why bring back crap?

Poltergeist was a scary movie back in the day. Many agree it's still is...

Keep in mind, you're only stating your opinion you ****ing A sshole! You and a few others have made so many over critical posts. To call a movie that has millions of fans "crap", is just plain ignorant. You idiot! Regardless what your opinion is, I think it would make a **** ton of money at the box office. I say go for it and lets see if it's good.

They shouldn't let 10 year olds post on this site. It's basically like we're babysitting as you rain on our parade.

Awaiting another stupid post from you. GFY

I have a real great plan to how "two writers remake poltergeist".

They don't.

Posted by: ico on March 23, 2009 at 22:05:12

Lets not forget the last big Hitchcock remake was Psycho with Vince Vaughn. Better yet, lets forget.

Posted by: Movie_Jamie on March 23, 2009 at 22:17:28

I didn't see that one but did hear it sucked. What does that have to do with this one? Anything besides the fact it's a remake?

Posted by: bababoozer on March 23, 2009 at 22:40:26

Geez.....leave Poltergeist alone. WTF? Must we remake EVERYTHING??????

Posted by: Ryan on March 23, 2009 at 22:52:53

They both should be left alone especially Poltergeist. The original is a classic plus that little girl and that movie just went hand in hand. I have a feeling that the special effects will ruin this movie. Even if they get a halfway decent cast things still not be in great shape but who knows hopefully at the last minute this will slip through the cracks. They should definitely leave out the kids and just make it a couple that is having trouble with ghosts. Not to many good child actors today that have a rare unique look for these type of horror flicks.

Casting will be important, no doubt. Hopefully they'll find the right cast as there are more people out there now than when the original was made. This wouldn't be an easy one and definately has the odds stacks against it. I would rather a remake as opposed to another ****ty similar film. At least it will get a larger budget due to that fact...

Are these the same directors as Boogeyman? I didn't like that one at all...

@ico,

good point, but at the same time, the sort of "reimagining" and modernizing of Rear Window didn't turn out half bad in Disturbia

I don`t wanna see a poltergeist remake, the original was great then, and still is.It`s in my fav spot with alot of other classics.

Posted by: Movie_Jamie on March 24, 2009 at 06:25:51

@scadamz and others...

Maybe one of the reasons I don't mind the remake attempts as much has to do with my view on the classics. I really enjoyed them back then, but rarely watch any of them now. I really liked Poltergeist and would love if I could "see it again for the first time"! I just don't think movies from 30 years ago are as appealing as new(er) ones.

Disturbia was awesome, I agree.

I'm in two minds whether a Poltergeist remake is a good or bad idea. I will always love the original and the cast of the original were a great family! But with the advances in special effect today they could make a really good film! The comments from the writers are promising to me. With regards to the whole remake debate, all films are an interpretation of something, whether it be a script, book, play, TV show etc. A remake of another film is the same thing, a new interpretation. I think the only downside of remaking a classic film is you have very high standards to meet. That's why alot of them dont match the original.

There should be an international law that bans remakes of Hitchcock films, period.

Posted by: scadamz on March 24, 2009 at 09:13:04

Modern tech is ok,but would you want to see star wars,or raiders get remade?Except for the prequels or indy 4.Hollywood needs to find people with some new ideas.

Posted by: Chris on March 24, 2009 at 09:47:58

Great!!! Morse senseless remakes!! Hollywood cannot come up with an original movie to save its life. And the writers cannot either. They have to go and get movies already made (and where all the owrk has been done) and make a few changes to the script. Here's an idea, why don't you fgo to the bookstore, look at some of the stories that have been published and make a movie from there. There are great books out there that have not been made into movies. Otherwise, continue being a hack.

Great. I bet Poltergeist will somehow have something to do the damn internet and cell phones now. That's about all that's changed. All the kids are dressing like the 80's anyway.

"How do two writers remake Poltergeist?"

....by giving up and not doing a remake

Posted by: hankcmoy on March 24, 2009 at 15:55:25

I agree with ttop33 2 writers should not remake it. Leave Poltergeist along. There is no need for it. Didn't they do a Birds 2 fro tv or something. So why remake that one. Some remakes work some don't. these 2 films seem that.

Posted by: Jay V. on March 24, 2009 at 16:36:01

I'll tell you why they should leave Poltergeist alone and it's not because of the actors, they can always find good actors out there if they look. It's not because of the special effects, todays effects would be great for the film. It's because I don't want to see another 70's or 80's R rated film turned into another PIECE OF CRAP PG-13 RATED REMAKE!!!!!!!

Posted by: alan on March 24, 2009 at 17:31:36

what they should do is have it several families in a subberb or go back to the 80's and a parallel family that lives down the street that are having the same paranormal things happening but are afraid to say anything so that the bad "priest spirit" can have a backup girl in his possession ....

Posted by: scadamz on March 24, 2009 at 18:46:13

Maybe they should put slimer in there, like from ghostbusters, they could market that s.h.i.t

Posted by: Super_fly on March 25, 2009 at 01:28:58

i think if a "writer" works on a remake or adaptation then they shouldnt be titles "writer"
