The Dead at Sea

Source:Image Comics
July 16, 2008

Some concepts circulating in the ether are insistent, demanding to be explored. One of them seems to be "zombies at sea."

A few years ago, a script was optioned with a story about the undead aboard a luxury liner. A couple on the verge of marital implosion are literally separated in different parts of the ship during an outbreak and the narrative was fragmented into two perspectives: His story. Her story. It was a good read. Ended with some strong images like a horde of fiery zombies piling over the side of the ship. I wish it happened. Oh, well...

Image Comics is bringing us Dead Ahead this September which takes a similar conceit but wraps it up in a different story. Here, writers Mel Smith and Clark Castillo tell of fishermen adrift at sea with nowhere to turn because a plague has hit dry land bringing the dead back to life. They run across a cruise ship and zombie madness begins.

Alex Niņo is providing the art for this three-part series which is due in late-September. A collected edition is expected in December with an additional 16 pages and other goodies.

There was a similar book by Brian Keene about this subject called... Dead Sea. Hmmm....

when do we get zombies in space?

Sean, I think Eric Red tackled that concept in an IDW mini-series. And Marand, you're right. I haven't read that Keene book yet. I should, I love me some zombies.

ZOMBIES at sea in space in caves in hell, all good, all we need is a good director.

That's wassup, Ryan. I have The Rising and City of the Dead, but haven't read'em yet. Are they pretty good? I read Keene's The Conquerer Worms and it scared the **** out of me.
