Rob Zombie Explains Why Return of Firefly Family is Unlikely

Fangoria Legends Rob ZombieThe Devil’s Rejects may have seen the demise of the Firefly family – Otis, Captain Spaulding and Baby – but they’ve never left Rob Zombie’s mind. In a recent article featured in the print edition of “Fangoria Legends Presents Rob Zombie,” the writer-director explains that he thinks about bringing them back to the screen “all of the time,” but it’s unlikely we’ll ever see that happen.

Here’s why:

“I’ve always thought I’d like to make another movie, because I love the characters, and I have an idea I think is solid for a third one – an idea that would make sense. The problem is, I don’t own the characters now. They’re owned by Lionsgate, and they just don’t have any desire to do anything. So it isn’t me not doing it because I don’t want to; I don’t have the ability to get it done.”

The Devil’s Rejects, a follow-up to House of 1,000 Corpses, opened in the summer of 2005 and grossed an estimated $17 million for Lionsgate. Given the studio has been shifting gears away from fare like that and becoming more of “the house of Hunger Games,” it’s unlikely Lionsgate will be seeking more Firefly adventures.

Over the weekend, Zombie screened the film in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as part of a Johnny Ramone Tribute Show.

Fangoria Legends Presents Rob Zombie is now on news stands.
