The Poughkeepsie Tapes Pulled from VOD, Here’s Why…

The_Poughkeepsie_Tapes_poster_20111212_7457550687What a crazy history The Poughkeepsie Tapes has had. This month, after years of sitting on the shelf, horror fans discovered the film – from the Dowdle brothers – found its way onto various VOD outlets. Yes, it was finally, and legally (I’m looking at you, film pirates), available to the public.

I ran into John and Drew Dowdle at Comic-Con today – where they are promoting As Above, So Below, their new horror film opening in theaters next month – and I congratulated them on Poughkeepsie‘s release. They admitted to not knowing about the VOD release until they read about the news on Shock Till You Drop, but they were quick to point out that if you look for it on VOD now…it has been pulled.

Drew explains:

“Suddenly over the last month MGM has been interested in a higher profile release of The Poughkeepsie Tapes. It’s no longer on VOD, they yanked it, but it will be coming back in a multi-platform release this fall. It’s come back to life.”

This isn’t confirmed, but it sounds to me like MGM is aiming for a limited theatrical/VOD release. Exciting news as I know a lot of fans who were eager to see the film wanted to catch it on the big screen.

Now, we just wait for the details. As always, I’ll keep you posted…

I swear I would sign an affidavit of truth to this. I saw this in the theaters in Connecticut in 2007. The version I saw was actually pretty f’ed up. When the movie was over and we were all exiting the Theater, there were 2 FBI vans outside and 2 camera men video taping the peoples faces that were leaving. I have 2 friends that spent years in Poughkeepsie, and after I laid out the film for them, they said that the film closely resembled events that actually did happen there. I believe the FBI was working with the directors/producers to exacerbate and push the real UNSUB who perpetrated the events. I also believe he/she was in CT during that timeframe. It’s my belief the FBI was controlling the release to the theaters to try to capture possible POI’s in the area. Until recently, I haven’t heard anything about this film.
