The Poughkeepsie Tapes Pulled from VOD, Here’s Why…

The_Poughkeepsie_Tapes_poster_20111212_7457550687What a crazy history The Poughkeepsie Tapes has had. This month, after years of sitting on the shelf, horror fans discovered the film – from the Dowdle brothers – found its way onto various VOD outlets. Yes, it was finally, and legally (I’m looking at you, film pirates), available to the public.

I ran into John and Drew Dowdle at Comic-Con today – where they are promoting As Above, So Below, their new horror film opening in theaters next month – and I congratulated them on Poughkeepsie‘s release. They admitted to not knowing about the VOD release until they read about the news on Shock Till You Drop, but they were quick to point out that if you look for it on VOD now…it has been pulled.

Drew explains:

“Suddenly over the last month MGM has been interested in a higher profile release of The Poughkeepsie Tapes. It’s no longer on VOD, they yanked it, but it will be coming back in a multi-platform release this fall. It’s come back to life.”

This isn’t confirmed, but it sounds to me like MGM is aiming for a limited theatrical/VOD release. Exciting news as I know a lot of fans who were eager to see the film wanted to catch it on the big screen.

Now, we just wait for the details. As always, I’ll keep you posted…

just release the damn thing on Blu ray

  • Mike

I hate that this happens to movies that people actively want to see. Just like how long it finally took “All The Boys Love Mandy Lane” to finally come out. And when it did…thanks to the hype…it kinda sucked. Another movie that never saw the light of day that I was hoping to see is “Ricky 6″. What the heck happened there?

    • J Jett

Mike, i agree. i (and i assume many others) are STILL waiting for the zombie/action flick RE-KILL (with Daniella Alonso) to see the light of day. the movie was supposed to be released i believe back in 2010/2011 but it’s just sitting there on the shelf!

      VERY VERY frustrating.

Trust me. Not worth seeing. Check out A Serbian Film instead if you want shock and horror.

    • Drool Bear

Yeah, you definitely can’t ‘unsee’ A Serbian Film. Once you’ve viewed it, your kinda stuck with those images in your mind forever.

  • Dan Houser

I won’t say HOW I saw this flick. But there’s some stuff that’s goofy in it. The FBI Agents blow the whole thing, in my opinion – they’re too….enthusiastic, is the term I’d use… The movie is a great idea for a movie. And there’s some scenes that are ‘Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer’ level of messed up and raw.

The Girl Scout scene is awesomely messed up. Anyway, We’ll see it when we see it I guess.

It’s been on you tube for ages. Movie sucks

  • raulfro

Saw this 3 years ago. It wasn’t all that great. It was chilling but rather dumb at the same time.

  • MadCows

I will be buying this, IF it ever comes to blu-ray.

  • Jason Lloyd

Movie is great. Cant wait for the blu-ray.
