Happy 4th of July from Riley & Charlie from the ‘Land of the Dead’

On this 4th of July, we want to wish all of you a safe and fun holiday weekend. How do you plan on spending this break? Let us know which horror flicks you're dipping into.

Me? I began with Return of the Living Dead, but finding myself looking forward to revisiting Land of the Dead. Caught this clip – which informs us Romero's zombies in his "Dead" universe are mesmerized by fireworks – online and it has me thinking about the film and how it doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves. This weekend, the New Beverly is screening Burnt Offerings in 35mm, so, looking forward to that, too!

Shock has dropped a lot of unique content over the last month – check out our editorials page – or sift through our news pages to check it all out. That should keep you satisfied until I jump back on the clock this weekend!

I agree Ryan, LOTD doesn’t get enough respect for what it is. The unrated version is the way to go, but still, I will take any theatrical Romero zombie film over World War Z, Resident Evil, (any of them), or whatever CGI crapfest that passes for a zombie film these days. Happy 4th.

Agreed. But I still liked WWZ. Great movie. Resident evil I will for sure give you that. We need a proper resident evil movie.

WWZ and any RE film (not including RE: RETRIBUTION which admittedly was abysmal) are Oscar caliber films compared to the abominations that are DIARY and SURVIVAL.

I’ll definitely be watching ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ tonight. My favorite horror film this time of year.

    I always watch Jaws

From what I’ve heard and myself, the hate of this movie has really let up alot. For me it’s because it was a perfect next movie in the dead series, after day introduced zombie “thoughts” this ran with it-Big Daddy is a flesh eating Moses! he parts the sea in their minds, letting them know they can walk through water. and the subtext of non-whites breaking through into prosperity is a good end to a series that started with the first badass black leading man. There’s legitimate real world optimism to it, at the start it was weird for a black man to star in a movie, and at the time of the last film, people of all races are not only in power but can work wherever they’d like in film.

Land of the Dead is actually one of my favorite movies. I can’t explain why.

LAND was really the last decent movie Romero has made. i would have liked a sequel to that film (with the same cast involved). shame he went on to make SURVIVAL and DIARY.
