Box Office: Oculus Opens in Third Place with $12 Million

oculusboxofficeAfter premiering as part of the Toronto International Film Festival's "Midnight Madness" last September and playing a number of festivals since, Mike Flanagan's Oculus was finally released by Relativity Media into 2,648 North American theaters on Thursday night.

Despite fantastic and mostly positive reviews including a 9/10 review from Shock's own Ryan Turek, the movie only opened with a modest $12 million or $4,500 per location, which was enough for it to open in third place at the box office.

The innovative take on the haunted mirror genre stars Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as a sister and brother who are haunted by horrifying and violent events from their childhood, which they blame on an antique mirror owned by their father, who murdered their mother (played by Katee Sackhoff). Ten years later, the siblings return to the scene of the crime to face whatever evil lurks inside the mirror.

Fortunately, there's no other horror movies in theaters until the April 25 release of Hammer Films' The Guilty Ones so maybe word-of-mouth will help Oculus find its audience before it leaves theaters.

Saw it, loved it, will pay to see it again at the theater. It is certain to make my Top Ten this year and tickles the part of me that loves time travel movies. My only gripe is that it doesn’t take the horror far enough.

Agree 100 percent. Absolutely loved the movie but I definitely think it fits more into the realm of supernatural thriller that borders on horror. I don’t want to be that guy who says “this is horror, that’s not”, I just think some films are clearly more genre than others. But other than that the movie kicked ass. Great performances from everyone (really loved Karen Gillan and the young actors), very well shot and the execution of the dual storylines and the parallel structure were stunning to watch. I’ll definitely see it in theaters again if I get the chance.

Oculus is one of the best pscholgical horror films in years!

  • Busta Nuts

Looks dumb and having sackoff in it throws me out of the movie

    • Tom Pinsonneault

Sorry to hear that. Her performance was excellent.

i admit i’m not all that knowledgeable about box office amounts/etc but is $12 million bad for a film like OCULUS? BoxOfficeMojo says the budget for the film is $5 million, so isn’t $12 million reasonable/ok? considering this movie is up against CAPT. AMERICA i think OCULUS bringing in $5 mill in it’s opening weekend is not too shabby.

    • Tom Pinsonneault

I would think so. Made nearly three times what it cost to produce…

  • Juan Asilo

huh i should give it ;ook.

Can’t wait to see this film after seeing Absentia. Going this coming weekend and I’m very excited!!
